  • And a reminder that the college admissions process can be brutal at times so take it easy and as always, a decision is not indicative of your worth or intelligence. As much time and effort you put in during your four years of high school, sometimes a lot of your chances are out of your control or up to your application in those last few months-whether that helps you or not.
    I don’t think I’m qualified to be giving actual advice so here are some resources I found helpful, if you're planning to apply soon:
    CollegeVine: (site) has helpful profiles of every college and an algorithm that generally predicts your chances at each one
    College Essay Guy: (Articles) good breakdown of the UC PIQs and Common App prompts w/ examples
    SupertutorTV: (YT channel) examples of effective essay topics, etc

    For those curious, I committed to…
    UC San Diego!🔱
    I eventually got off the waitlist for Santa Barbara in early June but was content with my decision to San Diego, based off school vibe, housing, and that I was already kind of emotionally committed to SD. Berkeley also emailed me in late July that they wouldn’t be able to admit me from the waitlist.

    These admissions are sadly really random. We had similar results, except I was waitlisted from ucla and rejected from ucb. My current top choice is uci. Congrats, regardless!

      I had a friend get rejected from Irvine & UCSD but accepted to UCLA. Wild how random some of it seems to be

    Congrats on your acceptances! We are kinda opposites lol. I was waitlisted at UCD, UCI, and UCSD. But I got into UCSB and UCB. Also got rejected from UCLA and USC. Admissions are so random.

    I looked at a lot of college decision reactions on TH-cam and I have to say you are all brilliant regardless what university you ultimately attend. It seems like these days there are a lot of brilliant students applying to universities and sometimes it has nothing to do with grades, classes taken and extracurricular activities that students get accepted or rejected at a particular university. Myself being a non-traditional student (I already have a bachelor and looking to going back to university for a second bachelors or masters), I am going to apply to university myself in a few years.

    Your reactions are what I hoped mine would be. I was crushed by my two rejections from UCB and USC even though I got into my top schools. Congratulations on all your acceptances! You're so strong and I love your family :)

    Just watched your video. Congratulations. My daughter is a senior this year and UCSD is her first choice. Do you have any pointers or resources that helped you?

      I think one way to try and stand out on college apps is to curate your application to tell a story or have some through line that connects your PIQs together with the rest of your profile like your extracurriculars, activities, or maybe your major. Having a common theme maybe gives a better sense of who you are, makes your values/passions clear, and hopefully pulls your whole application together. That said, I'm not an expert but those are some observations I made during the college app process and seeing from friends of mine. I'd recommend reading articles from "College Essay Guy" and I mentioned a few other resources in the description that I thought were helpful. Good luck to your daughter this year! (P.S, I'd totally recommend Eighth College if you're still deciding on how to rank the UCSD colleges. It has a great theme of "community and engagement," plus it has really nice apartment-style housing!)

    Can I ask why you didn't apply to Cal Poly SLO? They have a great Architecture Department that includes Urban planning

    • @maiya_ko
      @maiya_ko  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah! I think the more rural location of SLO wasn’t exactly what I was looking for so I didn’t really consider it and also the main major I applied under was Asian American Studies so I just didn’t end up doing a lot of research on SLO’s Architecture Department, but that’s cool they have a good urban planning program!
