    I have an idea how to help the 3rd floor heat issue! There is a cling film that you can buy online that you spread over the window glass that helps to prevent that, it's a UV blocking film. It still lets in light, but helps to prevent the room getting so hot from the sunlight. It's fairly inexpensive, you can find it anywhere online, and it peels right off, if your landlord wants it removed after you move out. I would definitely look into that, because that room is incredible, I would spend 99% of my time in the house in the 3rd room floor!

    • @sharonlea786
      @sharonlea786 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yes, I have used this in apartments and it really helps! I liked it because I could still enjoy the view, versus having curtains drawn all day. And they easily pull off when you move out.

    • @carboncookie
      @carboncookie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This absolutely works, but it will be very expensive for a window that size. Also the room is hot because it is directly under the roof and you can't change that.

    • @lizthedisjointedzebra692
      @lizthedisjointedzebra692 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@carboncookie lol, no, it is pretty inexpensive, you can get sheets/rolls of it and cut it to size. Also, no, the heat is mainly due to the greenhouse effect via the window glass, as Vika stated. Not sure why you are being so negative.

    • @lizthedisjointedzebra692
      @lizthedisjointedzebra692 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sophiophile Nope, the heat is mainly due to UV rays entering the room, hitting the floor and losing energy, so the rays are largely unable to exit through the glass. I can find a source explaining the greenhouse effect if you like.

    This was such a nice video. I can see why you love the house, especially the third floor with the amazing view. The suggestion of the UV blocking film is excellent for reducing the temperature. It must feel like a palace compared to the two apartments you had before. Your family and friends will be so impressed! Getting 3 videos in one week has been a real treat for your viewers. You’re spoiling us but we love it! Greetings to Tolya and Agatha. You look relaxed and happy. Best wishes from San Diego!

      I think a fan and the UV blocking window tint will be soo helpful for upstairs! Or if one of the windows open, a window AC would be great but probably fairly expensive, and I know Vika mentioned she didn't want to buy much.

  • @lindad1195

    It’s a gorgeous house!! I love the third floor! I think if you got some dark curtains that will keep the heat out if you keep them closed during the day and open the windows at night to get the cool air. Either that or get a window air conditioner.

    • @novaconetta1577
      @novaconetta1577 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I was thinking the same thing. I would also try a fan in the window pulling air from the room out during the day and then turning it around to pull air in at night. Is there an attic above that room? Some houses have an attic fan that removes heat that rises in a house. Maybe ask the landlord?

    • @hebbbby
      @hebbbby 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes dark curtains and a fan I reckon. We have a similar problem with a very hot 2nd floor bedroom where the afternoon sun shines right in, and cats so we can't open the windows too much. We find that pulling the curtains over half the window during the hot part of the day really helps. We also open windows in that room and other rooms to get a through draft and we have a fan.

    I am so very glad Victoria you have finally found a suitable home and you have really have been blessed as it is a truly lovely house. It is so good and practical that it is furnished as well so you do not have to spend your time, energy and money on looking for furniture. I am just so relieved for you all, you have a home now and you can relax and not think about the past now but just focus on the future. How beautiful is the top floor of your house!!. You could make this into a retreat area at night-time for you and your husband, with some lovely lamps and a sofa and eat lovely food whilst gazing at the stars! Wonderful to see you so happy, calm and rested.

    Thank you for sharing your country house stay with us. The third-floor loft room is so beautiful! Seeing your joy at the spacious kitchen and bathroom and having a dishwasher for the first time takes me back to the first time I rented a house after I moved to a small American college town for my first post-degree job. As someone who has moved frequently, I completely agree with you that it would be more practical if more rentals came completely furnished. Enjoy these comforts and enjoy being able to share these little comforts with family and friends.

    In addition to window film one option would be to put the most powerful box fans you can find blowing OUT of the attic through a window, blocking off the rest of the window opening. Set the fans to blow out, since hot air rises and you also get heat via the windows and roof. If the fans are strong enough it will blow hot air out of the room and draw cooler air up from lower parts of the house. When it’s cooler outside than in, reverse the direction. If humidity is part of the issue a portable dehumidifier can help. Window AC units are more expensive but a good last resort option if the landlord will allow.

    A simple temporary window solution for the attic room is to line most of the window frames with aluminum foil. This completely blocks the light. Leave some open to still enjoy the view. But if you needed to keep it cool so maybe use it for guest sleeping, it will help very much. We learned this trick from an old Alaskan because we could not sleep in Alaska with the sun shining 24 hours. This house will be perfect for all your company. Blessings

    Here is another possible way of keeping 3rd floor cooler. If you do not want to buy an portable air conditioner the UV film or dark drapes to cover windows will also help. I would also buy window fans big ones that I square and fit in window. I would place it during day taking hot air out and at night turn fan around so cool air comes in. They use to make fans that had switch to reverse flow so you do not have to turn fan around. Also I am sure husband can find a way to secure fan in window or buy cheap table for fan that brings fan close and two window height. I would also open balcony door and place another fan there to draw cooler air in house while upper fan is drawing hot air out. Just be sure to make a gate so baby will not go on balcony alone. When I lived in 2nd floor of a house the two fan idea took heat out of apartment in about 30 minutes. Good luck. I enjoy your videos.

    I looked through some of the comments but not all, so I am not sure if anyone has said this, but just in case this is helpful in any way:
    I live in Canada, so I am speaking from a context where the roof and walls are insulated, so your mileage may vary.
    Here is how we worked with passive cooling for 12 years was:
    a) open the windows wide when the air is cool in the early morning (could be VERY early morning)
    b) when the air outside is heating up in the morning, close the windows to keep the cool air in
    c) and, at that time, close the curtains or blinds over all windows that will receive sun for that period of the day. The thicker/denser the curtains, the better.
    Obviously, for this to work, there need to be windows that can be opened, and curtains or blinds to cover the windows. And, as some people have pointed out, insulation in the house, and trees outside of the house, greatly facilitate this process.

    Beautiful house! We have 2 rooms that get way too hot in the Southern California sun, I installed blackout and thermal curtains in one that we keep closed during afternoon while sun is in that window, but we can keep open during the morning. The other room is used as an office and doesn’t have much of a view anyway so I put a blackout vinyl on almost all windows, keeps the room MUCH cooler.

    I like to open all the wibdows at night so the house cools off, then close it up during the hot day. Not sure if that will work where you are, though. Depends on the climate and on the house.
    Another idea is to have a powerful fan in a window on the 3rd floor, sucking hot air out. If you leave a door or window open downstairs, you will get a good draft going up and out.

    I'm so happy you have found such a lovely place to stay. The top floor is hot because of the windows and also because warm air comes up from the rest of the house and the temperature builds up. I suggest buying some cheap large bed sheets in a pale colour to pin over the windows. Get a couple of metal hooks and put them on the sides of the windows to let you tie back the sheets when you want to see the view outside. (Use: Ribbon? Plaited wool? Even rope?) Also, if you buy a floor standing fan, it will stir the heat and help too. Maybe open a window a little at night if it's cooler then, and safe to do so.
    Have a lovely summer XXX.

    Hello Victoria. I have some comments on the heat in your beautiful loft. I live in a part of Australia that is a bit warmer than Tbilisi, but not too much. And I sleep in a loft similar to yours. Unfortunately, it gets hot even after building it to keep out direct sunlight. I have the UV filtering film suggested by some, but it only keeps out about 1 degree centigrade of heat. We built our house with an eave to keep the window shaded in summer. If your loft receives direct sunlight through the windows there is little you can do to stop it heating the room. In addition to the UV film, we close our curtains on hot days and we have a vent in the ceiling to help hot air escape. We don't run an air conditioner in our loft because it is large and we don't want to spend too much money on electricity. We also insulated the roof with the thickest insulation we could buy at the time. With all these strategies the room still reaches up to 30 degrees centigrade by the end of the day from the direct sunlight on the roof. I can tolerate the heat best if I sit in front of a fan that blows air over me, and I keep a damp cloth nearby to wet my skin from time to time. Above 30 degrees, it becomes too much of a stress for children, and old people like me, to be in the heat for too long, even with the fan. Luckily, with the windows open at night, it is cool enough to sleep most nights, even when the day reaches 38 degrees outside. I don't know if there are insect screens on your windows, but they are essential for me sleeping with the window open because we have mosquitos.

    I have lived in hot apartments before. The secret is to keep the sun out during the day and then opening the windows at night and letting the cool air in. You MUST seal it up before the sun rises, though, and put blackout curtains to keep the heat out during the day. Don't even use lightbulbs, as they generate heat. I used to have a nightlight on the end of an extension cord during the day. In the evening though, tear down the curtains and throw open all the windows and let the cool breeze in! Once the heat is in, it's trapped though, and impossible to get it out. You can't let it get in in the first place.

    I'm trying to figure out if I've ever seen a kitchen that big in the house of anyone that I've ever known. Maybe my friend's sister... But it's so modern and it has so many cabinets and there's so much counter space and you can't hear the emphasis in my voice as I say this It's just amazing. Actually I have lived in some houses with larger kitchens that they never had any countertops and there was no place to work and I put a box of stuffing mix in the refrigerator one day by accident. And then I couldn't find it because it doesn't belong in the refrigerator. But I was in the middle of cooking something and I lost it. And I love your rat house. It's really cool and I love the color. And I've only gotten as far as the rat house!

    Oh!! If you’re not too busy PLEASE take us around to see Georgia!! When I was a teenager back in the 1970’s a family of immigrants moved into the apartment above us. They were from Georgia and I have always longed to see the country they spoke so highly of.

    We use tension curtain rods & add blackout curtains to help sleep later after the sun rises. Also these help reduce heat in the room. Your house is huge! I love the size of the kitchen!

    I enjoy your videos a lot, Viki, and am always so happy when I see that another one has been posted. To help cool down the upstairs loft, you can try opening the windows during the night when it is cooler outside. Of course, it's good if there are screens on the windows so that bugs don't get in. Then, when it starts to get warmer in the morning, close the windows until the temperature is the same outside as in. The other thing to do is to keep the direct sun out of the room--to do this, you need a heavy-ish curtain to draw over the windows during the time of day when there is direct sunlight.

    I LOVE your house! So spacious and comfy!! And the country setting is divine. Such a beautiful view from that attic room!! I agree with other posters who've suggested thermal drapes. It will make a big difference--that, and perhaps the landlady would let you install a wall or window unit air conditioner? We don't need central air here in coastal Northern California, but we do have a window unit in our bedroom and it makes summer nights so much more comfortable.
    It was so nice to see a more playful video from you too. You guys were having fun with the camera, love it! I realize it's important not to share too much of your direct location, but thank you SO MUCH for showing us your home!
