Rick Rubin created the "boom bap" sound in hip hop that became popular during the Golden Age. It's why I push back on Lord Jamar saying that whites are guests in hip hop. Guests don't lay the foundation of the house or renovate the house. They come in and chill or enjoy what'd already built. Rubin is an integral part of the classic hip hop sound. And he helped to bring in rock audiences, which one could argue saved hip hop from falling into obscurity and helped it to leave New York. Before Rick Rubin, rap music was basically an extension of disco, where the MCs rapped in sing-song cadences over live instrumentation. Rubin brought in the 808s ("boom") and the hard, clapping snares ("bap").
The point is to own the publishing. The last time I checked, Michael Jackson's estate STILL owns the rights to the Beatles song catalog, 30 years later. Yes, they have the rights to every song and they give permission for it to be used in commercials, movies etc... And when it's played on radio etc... they get paid. And since Michael Jackson died 2009, his estate has earned 600 million dollars in revenue from the publishing! It doesn't matter if Sir Mix-A-Lot is worth 1 million or 1 billion, as long as he owns his music, he'll continue to get paid.

Damn right the labels rob these men and women blind and the only way they can make money or get rich is from touring like hell lol. The best thing a young artist can do is get a two drop deal and then get that one hit to make it big and then tour like hell and start a label and go solo after getting raped for a year or so by the label.
Lol.......these comments are crazy. Instead of worrying about how much money he has now, take time listen to the interview. He owns his "own" publishing. If y'all are true fans of hip-hop, you "should" learn the history and business aspects of the music industry.......justsaying
For those folks saying that Mix is a one hit wonder, that shows that you must be part of the pop crowd that ironically has kept this song relevant for over 20 years. Mix has a few hits before Baby Got Back blew up. Posse On Broadway and Square Dance Rap are classics. Swass (released 2 years before Baby got back) went platinum. Nicki sampling Baby Got Back just means that he's gonna see a nice jump in his royalties from it because of the stannish nature of her fans and the overkill from it getting played on pop stations 10 times a day lol
I'll admit Baby Got Back is the only song by him that I know. But I never thought he was a one hit wonder. I've just never listened to his other music. And I recognize that the trashy rappers in today's time such as Nikki or Cardi B are nowhere near on the level of rappers like Sir-Mix-A-Lot or even Missy Elliott. Another female rapper who's been in the game for decades and doesn't get the credit she deserves.
@@danielwong5378 So Danny Wong, how do you know what "whites" think and do and like and hate and so on? What's the source of your knowledge and insight?
@@interestedbystander196 Well... the whites history, that's how. Black Wall Street from 1921 really tells the tale. Just like their racist mindset, I doubt the whites evolved enough to get over their hatred of rich black folks that has more than they do. History always repeats itself.
@@danielwong5378 Seems that you might be the one with the racist mindset, friend. I'm going out on a limb here and guessing you don't equate yourself with "white", and that you hold a them-and-us mindset. As a person of colour, I find that offensive. It's fools who perpetuate the them-and-us thinking that are actually part of the problem, you know? Fools who do what you're doing.
@@interestedbystander196 Explain what exactly makes me a racist. Because, I'm beginning to think that you might be a little too dim witted to carry on this dialogue. And, what's this trend where you people are claiming that you're not white??? I get enough of that on Twitter.
Can't tell you how many times I corrected people who've called him a one-hit wonder...Posse On Broadway was my JAM when I was a little kid..one of the 1st rap songs I ever heard on the radio & I still play it every now & then..& I'd say a huge one responsible for my love & appreciation for the 808s in the beats of today
Madd respect to you Mix A Lot!... But the sample you used was NOT from Kraftwerk, but Detroit techno group Model 500's "Technicolor"...Just wanted to clear that up!
i remember when baby got back came out and i "got it" immediately even though i was just a kid.. i always liked sir mix-a-lot songs because they had a good energy.. another guy who was good like that who made a killing was heavy d cuz he made the song for mad tv and the one for in living color
God bless Sir Mix-a-lot! He helped me be confident at a time when having a big booty was not the norm, especially for a white girl. He changed the landscape of rap & personally I'm grateful. A true legend!
Sir Mix-a-lot gets the one hit wonder label put on him because Baby got Back is his only song to hit number one. Mix-a-lot has plenty of hits: Posse on Broadway, Beepers,Swass, my hooptie,Game,Brimelo, Square dance rap,Attack on the Stars....#oldschool #hiphophead
The term one hit wonder is usually referring to the pop charts and he only had one pop/crossover hit. Now I grew up listening to Swass and Seminar in the late 80s, so I know Mix-a-Lot already had his hip-hop cred well established before Baby Got Back... But considering the way the term is almost always used, he qualifies as a one hit wonder. As an example from a different genre, the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden has only had one top ten hit in their home country and none in America... they would be considered one hit wonders when looking at the British singles charts... But they've been together for almost 40 years, sold over 100 million albums and still sell out arenas and stadiums around the world. Are they 'one hit wonders'? Well sure, but they are also still remarkably successful and wealthy. Hit singles aren't the only measure of success.
Anybody who thinks Mix A Lot ain't got guap is surely sleeping. Dude has been paid and still is. Owning his publishing is super smart. Baby Got Back gets played so much on theatrical trailers, commercials, whatever that you know dude's been eating good off of it. All it takes is that one ubiquitous hit and you will be set for life if your paperwork is straight. Pharrell's "Happy" is gonna be one of those songs. Of course you hear it in commercials now but I guarantee that joint is gonna be played like that for years to come. If Pharrell retires now, I bet he will be eating off of Happy for the rest of his life. Not even counting other hits he's been a part of.
I've been waiting to his response on this subject Dude was producing for pop acts in the late 90's...he's not broke! My Hooptie is my favorite...Posse on Broadway is close second!!!!
For anyone stumbling upon this in 2019 keep in mind that SMA did the right thing by owning is publishing rights, but that's not the full equation. A little known fact is that Macklemore (also Seattle-based, btw) went mainstream owning almost every right to their music. Nearly everyone big owns publishing rights if they wrote the song, that's cool, but when you own the music (masters) you collect ALL of the income. Publishing, royalites, merchandising, tours, .etc. Record companies don't allow this, this is where they make the majority of their money. Well, let me correct that, royalties are where they USED to make the majority of their money. Now you have something called 360 deals (like Wayne, Nikki & Drake signed) which give them royalties, publishing, touring and merchandise. Never, ever sign a 360 deal. You're getting screwed. You may get away with owning publishing, but you will lose the one massive income producing vehicle you have (touring). Touring is where musicians make their money. How would you like knowing you dropped a platinum album (downloads + physical sales) where you knew you weren't ever going to make a cent after costs anyway and then find out your worldwide tour that raked in $100m just netted you $5m after costs? That's what happens when you sign 360 deals, you walk away with very little. The YoungMoney team is doing OK, don't get me wrong, but wouldn't you say Drake's generated at least $500m in revenue throughout his career between tours, album sales, merchandising, residuals (publishing royalties) and licensing? Easy. Do you think he's worth even $50m? No. That's the problem. So people, take a page from Mix and Macklemore and own everything. Partner only with the people that can help you get radio (that's what Macklemore did) and make kick ass music and tour. Then you'll really be rich.
Friend of mine booked him for a show in my fairly small home town here in Washington state. Three decades later and I'm still kicking myself for not going..
I wonder how is Larry the white guy who people thought was funny, is he still a real estate investor making lots of money? Inquiring minds want to know.
Sir mix a lot is the man! I remember a few years back being at a car meet in Seattle and we see a lambo pull up... he hopped out and had a genuine interest in the cars at the meet and was a super down to earth guy!!
Abdul Muhammad Humza.. yeah, here's a comment from you: ''seems like if u sell crack u U SMOT''... you obviously DON'T know how to speak or write the English language. Your people have an average of a 70 IQ. And you seem to be below that.
Supreme5panel She has to pay him for the heavily sampled beat otherwise she'd get done for copyright fraud. She would of had to ask for his permission to remake the song in the first place.
I appreciate how Mix references the influence Kraftwerk had on his music. Kraftwerk influenced most of early hip hop from the East Coast to the West Coast and everywhere in between. Mix's early recordings were Techno Hop joints (think Egyptian Lover, Unknown DJ, Rodney O and other West Coast pioneers), but before Baby Got Back blew up, California and the whole southern US blacked out over Square Dance Rap
I have been a Mix-a-lot fan since a friend gave me Seminar in High School. I was a "rap show" DJ on a college radio station in 1991 when Mack Daddy came out. I only added the song "Mack Daddy" to my playlist until I heard a buzz about "Baby Got Back" from other students. It was funny to be ahead of the curve and miss it.
Mix's shit was always clean sounding. He definately was a pioneer as far being diversified at getting paper.Never came off as some ghetto ass rapper spitting nonsense. Always had intelligent, witty lyrics. And as i remember, was one of the first cats rockin foriegn whips with exotic wheels. I laugh at people making broke comments about this man. He Has classic bonafied hip-hop hits under his belt. Im not a nicki fan but im glad to see mix get his paper.
I remember being at Prairie View A&M for a summer session when I first heard "Posse On Broadway" back in 89 or 90 echoing in the halls of the dormitory.,. Props to Sir Mix-a-Lot .,, and props to VLAD Tv for a great interview.,,.
Miss those days of ALBUMS. I was like a 1st grade kid who bought the album for “baby got back” and became huge fans of all the songs he mentioned. Andddd I was also singing “I’m your new god...you can call me cocaine (sniff sniff sniff, ahhh). Lolol!
Jay Z doesnt own the publishing to Reasonable Doubt. Kareem Biggs Burke and Damon Dash still own it. He has been trying to buy that publishing back for years but Dame is too smart of a business man to sell it to him.
I begged my dad to buy me the full album that had Baby Got Back and he looked at it said, I ain't buyin' this ish because you ain't gon like it, but we can buy the single. We used to spend so much time in the Wherehouse. That's about as far as he goes with me.
That's to bad. My Hooptie and Posse on Broadway is two of the best banging songs to ride too. This guy always had the hits, and far as bumping in your car. Listen to Square dance rap as well. To this day, no song has more bass then Posse on Broadway. In LA it's a car culture, and way of life on the West Coast period, and nobody beats this guy.
Sir Mix A Lot should write a book about the music business . Because you don't hear a lot of Black artists talking about royalties and publishing and how you can use it to your advantage.
Very educational Mix-a-lot. There's a lot of information here that a lot of artist didn't know, but should know. Preciate the luv big homie! #BabyGotBack
I agree with u on that thats why it was so big to. It also was a clue of what rap was going to be come now its whitewashed mainsterm. All u hear now is tracks a bout booty shaking money cars clothes.
soooo its made for white people, yet it still being used by a black artist and remixed and once again is out mainstream... and he is still getting paid for it... Yeah.. just accept it, a classic is a classic, no matter what genre, and those who are going to like it doesn't matter what race are going to like it.

I didn't know Baby got Back was from the 90s! All my life I thought it came out in the 80s till just now. Wow! And Sir mix a lot isn't a one hit wonder, it's just that Baby got Back is tooooooo good of a song. Iconic level status. A masterpiece. A once in a million creation. And his other songs are great too, but Baby got Back is on another level. Unreachable.
I just heard someone slappin i got game which was one of my favorite slaps this am. Which brought me here. Mix alot was big before baby got back. That was just the icing on the cake. I loved swass! My favorite album!
As a kid, I thought the "Baby Got Back" song was silly. I mean it's a song about butts, that's really weird. As a teenager, I still thought the song was funny, but I did not want to listen to it in polite company. Nowadays, I still see humor in it, but I've found myself connecting to it more and more. As an Animator drawing attractive anime girls, I discovered my favorite type are the "Thicc" types. In other words, "itty bitty waist, round thing in your face." On a similar note, it seems more and more western folks on websites, such as Twitter, are confused as to what "Thicc" and "Curvy" means. A lot of them believe this means fat or chubby, and that's just not true. This song perfectly describes them as having not fat, but "big healthy butts". Combined with the small waist description and the upfront message of "I like big butts" the song is a perfect tool to use when describing the appearance and appeal of Thicc and Curvy women.

My hooptie is a certified hood classic
"Myyyyyy hooptie rollin", tailpipe draggin"
The Swass Record was already a multi platinum classic by the timne baby got back came out. Posse on Broadway!!!!!! CLASSIC!!!!
A black man with financial freedom, I love it.
@TheDodicat Not Really a shocker. It's just that the whites hate to see a rich black man. It's makes them sad for some reason.
Sir mix a lot very smart move to capitalize on your publishing early on
Seems like a nice guy, well done to him.
Posse up!
He also did his own remixes of his songs. Mix is one of the smartest people in the rap game. He recognized it was a game long ago.
People caring about hits are stupid
The definition of a G. Truth. Kids, pay attention.
Sir Mix-a-lot sounds like a very intelligent man. And a very rich man... Up until now I thought he hadn't made much money since "Baby Got Back."
yea. he doesnt end every sentence with KNOW IM SAYIN, KNO IM SAYIN, KNO I MING....
+TheCompton1963 looool yup
Exactly
Madd respect to you Mix A Lot!...
But the sample you used was NOT from Kraftwerk, but Detroit techno group Model 500's "Technicolor"...Just wanted to clear that up!
Came here to say this.
i remember when baby got back came out and i "got it" immediately even though i was just a kid.. i always liked sir mix-a-lot songs because they had a good energy.. another guy who was good like that who made a killing was heavy d cuz he made the song for mad tv and the one for in living color
'Put em on the GLASS' wouldn't stop playing on The Box
Props to Sir-mix. A pioneer in this music industry still successful and knowledgable as of today!!
Mix has always been a smart man.
1:24 Awesome when a brother admits he loves techno. ME TOO !! I can definitely here the techno influence in "Baby Got Back"
Anybody who thinks Mix A Lot ain't got guap is surely sleeping.
I've been waiting to his response on this subject
Dude was producing for pop acts in the late 90's...he's not broke!
Sir Mix-a-Lot schooling this a new generation - Respect!
Seminar...one of the best albums of all time
Great album. My fave is swass
I have so much respect and admiration for this man.
I wonder how is Larry the white guy who people thought was funny, is he still a real estate investor making lots of money? Inquiring minds want to know.
That'll be the skateboard dude?
& Kid Sensation the teenage lady killer
siiiick...lol
Harley Weedwax He’s the middle aged donut killer now
Maharaji is on the def side dancing like a freak
Seen this dude New Year's 2019. He still got it!!
Sir mix a lot is the man!
I remember a few years back being at a car meet in Seattle and we see a lambo pull up... he hopped out and had a genuine interest in the cars at the meet and was a super down to earth guy!!
By the way, this man is in his 50's and doesn't look a day over 30-35. #blackdontcrack
Living clean.
Sir mix a lot is easily my favorite rapper. Got everything humility, humor, bravado, intelligence and Killer beats. I hope he was able to keep his chage
It seems like if you're from Seattle, you're born with a good business sense...
+Ana Castellano seems like if u sell crack u U SMOT
Abdul Muhammad Humza.. You can't even speak English. Now run along with your child molesting prophet.
+Ana Castellano I can speak, write, and understand the English language. You just seem incompetent...
Abdul Muhammad Humza.. yeah, here's a comment from you: ''seems like if u sell crack u U SMOT''... you obviously DON'T know how to speak or write the English language. Your people have an average of a 70 IQ. And you seem to be below that.
Abdul Muhammad Humza''for a Muslims''.. please explain how that makes sense. And I'm a woman.. moron.
Always made a song that was catching. Kept it clean and professional. An OG in the game. One GOAT on many.
He's making money on Nicki's new single
really? how did you come up with that Einstein?
Supreme5panel .......
Supreme5panel She has to pay him for the heavily sampled beat otherwise she'd get done for copyright fraud. She would of had to ask for his permission to remake the song in the first place.
Supreme5panel She gotta pay him for that long ass sample.
NICKI IS USING HIS MUSIC!
Very smart man living the American Dream.
Proof you only gotta do it right ONCE matter. Don't let your failures keep you from going for it!
Years back I seen one his live shows; he truly has a Great catalog of bangers, true story...
Publish and leverage
Mix's shit was always clean sounding. He definately was a pioneer as far being diversified at getting paper.Never came off as some ghetto ass rapper spitting nonsense. Always had intelligent, witty lyrics. And as i remember, was one of the first cats rockin foriegn whips with exotic wheels. I laugh at people making broke comments about this man. He Has classic bonafied hip-hop hits under his belt. Im not a nicki fan but im glad to see mix get his paper.
Preach my brother.
I remember being at Prairie View A&M for a summer session when I first heard "Posse On Broadway" back in 89 or 90 echoing in the halls of the dormitory.,. Props to Sir Mix-a-Lot .,, and props to VLAD Tv for a great interview.,,.
Pearls of wisdom plus he is heavy into real estate
People may not remember that he also had a hit song called " buttermilk biscuits" back in the day as well.
He made money off Realestate before rap..
Really?
Yes. Him and Larry...The guy he spoke about in Posse on Broadway.
shalalala I didn't know that either lol. Only one I knew about that made mad money from real estate and still doing good is Slick Rick!
@@ReginalBronson Larry is the white guy people think hes funny, a real estate investor who makes a lot of money.
@@igotthejuice2090 exactly Bro
Sir mix alot was my first concert I'm 45 still listening to mix in 2022
Mix a lot has always been a smart cat, back in the day he used to preach to other rappers about handling their business 💯
Shawn Cooke he owns his publishing, he just doesn't own the masters to Reasonable Doubt
Always liked this guy. He is a good example of enterprising game.
I begged my dad to buy me the full album that had Baby Got Back and he looked at it said, I ain't buyin' this ish because you ain't gon like it, but we can buy the single. We used to spend so much time in the Wherehouse. That's about as far as he goes with me.
you lookin good girl.you ever try youtube dating? ;)
John Smathers Thank you and no. It's pointless. Nobody's booking flights to meet anybody.
That's to bad. My Hooptie and Posse on Broadway is two of the best banging songs to ride too. This guy always had the hits, and far as bumping in your car. Listen to Square dance rap as well. To this day, no song has more bass then Posse on Broadway. In LA it's a car culture, and way of life on the West Coast period, and nobody beats this guy.
thee one Dang, I forgot all about My Posse on Broadway.
LaCheleWallace
Yea i aint forget a bout it baby nope let me give u a BUBBLE bath.
Sir Mix A Lot should write a book about the music business . Because you don't hear a lot of Black artists talking about royalties and publishing and how you can use it to your advantage.
Sir mix a lot is such a success not just because of his talent but because he is smart and business savvy.
Yo, Buttermilk Biscuits is still to this day my favorite Mix a lot tune. Because who does not like buttermilk biscuits?
smart dude if he owns his publishing
Gortex was one of my favorites! Little known fact..Mix-a-lot is a c.b.'er on Channel 6 who goes by the C.B. handle Prime Minista
Very educational Mix-a-lot. There's a lot of information here that a lot of artist didn't know, but should know. Preciate the luv big homie! #BabyGotBack
My Posse's On Broadway..... it took some time, but I love that cut. Iron Man, Beepers, and My Hooptie are still some great jams too.
GORETEX is my favorite song by Sir mix a lot, then Testarossa.
Yeah Gortex was harding then shit. I blew up some house Speakers on that song.
my Tessarossa was tough...Air intake, 2nd gear pass n fake

Baby got Back is the white ppl anthem.
yea it is....throw it on the juke box at a white bar and sit back and watch with a beer...lmaoooo
and that's how you know he's earning good cheques down the years.
Yeah.. just accept it, a classic is a classic, no matter what genre, and those who are going to like it doesn't matter what race are going to like it.
pretty much lol
I just watched a video of mix a lot performing posse on broadway an baby got back with the Seattle orchestra it was pretty cool to see that, it’s worth watching
Cool dude. I also like Kraftwerk.
"... and at the time Cosmo described anyone bigger than an heroin addict as fat..." Rotflmfao
I just heard someone slappin i got game which was one of my favorite slaps this am. Which brought me here. Mix alot was big before baby got back. That was just the icing on the cake. I loved swass! My favorite album!
My anaconda don't want none unless you got buns hunn.
I loved all of SMaL stuff, dude is an absolute genius and thats rippin!
In other words, "itty bitty waist, round thing in your face."
On a similar note, it seems more and more western folks on websites, such as Twitter, are confused as to what "Thicc" and "Curvy" means.
People get confused by what "thicc" and "curvy" means? That's surprising. Especially western people
Glad to know he's doing well.
