Stunning. What a great masterclass for young sopranos. Listen to how she caresses each phrase, how she continually alters her dynamics (and not based on registers!) and especially how her beautiful legato is articulated with no vibrato, creating a feeling of despair and desolation, reminiscent of Dido's Lament. Brava Diana!
You know, usually this aria is sung by a voice with a completely different demeanor. I imagine the color of pamina's voice would be warmer. Diana Damrau is my home girl, but we all know her coloratura rep beats this by 1,000x's
@yamiko193 Pamina is traditionally for a lyric or light dramatic soprano. But Damrau's a (slightly dramatic?) coloratura soprano. Obviously with enough lyrical qualities for this role, though! ^_^ Like her more as the Queen of the Night (dramatic coloratura role) though.
@miesermogelvogel you're so right, she really was the greatest queen EVER!!!!! i'm in love with her voice. especially when she does the Queen's high F's :)
Wah, I think I'd love to hear her say: Questo è il baccio di Tosca! and kill Scarpia afterwards. For one role in which she could kill the bad guy... LOL
Well, actually, Röschmann's voice is lyrical-dramatic and Diana's lyrical-coloratura, so I guess vocally, Diana would be way more appropriate for the role. I think Röschmann's voice has a darker tone than hers. And agreed on the dress... It's a mistake.
I'd kill to BE le Comte xDDDDDD They both will also record a CD with an opera, 'Ercole sul Termodonte' of Vivaldi. It will come out next april (aprox). In the same CD Ciofi, Genaux, Daniels, Jaroussky and Villazón will sing too ^^ Aaaaaaaaaaand Diana will record a new CD with arias of Mozart called 'Mozart Donna'. But that's still a secret, so hush xDDDD
If you want to split hairs, Pamina is technially a Light Lyric, as opposed to say, Marguerite in Faust (Dame Kiri singing that, also here on youtube, illustrates the difference well, as that is a Full Lyric). Light has a more youthful sound to it.
I thought Malin Hartelius and Dorothea Roschmann were the best ones singing this aria, but this interpretation shows how it can be, if it is perfectly done.
i'd love to see/hear her met production as the queen of the night (the Noh inspired version)... the video I could find from that production is Erika Miklosa, who's good but i'm just too spoiled by Diana Damrau's queen not to feel critical of anyone else...
But Pamina is so much more expressive! The Queen is kind of one-dimensional. Damrau may be capable of doing the Queen vocally but it's hardly a waste for her to play Pamina.
Dorothea Roschmann has always been my favorite in this role......and lilth you know I can't STAND Diana Damrau, but she's pretty fair in this role.(wink*wink*nudge*nudge)
Muchas gracias! No tiene nada que Lilith no consiga botar las manos, esta chica es increíble Diana sounds so great as Pamina! I'll always remember her days when she was the fantastic Queen
You probably know all this too, but she's gonna do Rigoletto at the Met, and 2010-11 i think? she's in Le Comte de Ory with Joyce DiDonato! Two goddesses in one production :] I'd kill to see Le Comte.. lol
I prefer Roschmann in this role because her voice has a lighter, brighter quality more suited to a teenage rolle - Diana Damrau has a darker tone to a voice that makes it wonderful, but maybe not for this. That aside, the technique and generally the whole thing was beautiful (: Maybe the pianissimos could be softer? Haha. Not that it takes anything away from the great performance. But the dress looks like Cubism gone wrong.
Really?! I'd rather leave that to Netrebko and Gheorghiu. I want to hear Damrau in bel canto. Imagine some of the Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini rarities she could do with JDF!!! I really want to hear her to Semiramide, "bel raggio" especialy, maybe even the showstopper from Attila!!!!!
I love how she can easily switch between the Queen of the Night and Pamina. I Love Ms. Damrau!
She is too freaking good... Her queen AND her Pamina are breathtaking
I love Pamina's aria in her voice too, but I think Mozart wrote the Queen for Diana Damrau... :)
I do love her...but you have to hear Anna Moffo singing this - truly inspiring!

that's really ood Mozart technique-- spot on. very beautiful. thank-you
Good God, is the conductor trying to kill her? It's andante, not largo.
this is wunderbar but she is even more amazing as queen of the night.

Goodness this is incredible. A coloraturra is just too advanced for this song but its so beautiful to hear
I am going to add this aria to my rep book when I get to college. Hopefully, I can pull it off.
Aah, the way she hits her consonants...so German of her. Whatever. Che bella voce!
@yamiko193

And a dramatic coloratura at that. Diana was born for the Queen.
I want to hear her in everything! :D
God, her voice is amazing...
She is SOOO BEAUTIFUL! :'(
Unfortunately, I don't think it was recorded :( Thanks for commenting ^^
@miesermogelvogel you're so right, she really was the greatest queen EVER!!!!! i'm in love with her voice. especially when she does the Queen's high F's :)
Me too. She is the real queen of the night!!!!
It was 4am in the morning when I started making this video, so you can't ask for more! ;)
When I grow up I want to sing this aria! :D
Grow up my voice, of course... :P
Wah, I think I'd love to hear her say: Questo è il baccio di Tosca! and kill Scarpia afterwards. For one role in which she could kill the bad guy... LOL

Maravillosa!
Gracias Lilith89. Había estado esperando esto de ti.

Yeah, I know her schedule nearly by heart, thanks xD
@yamiko193 Pamina's vocal range is light lyric soprano..
i'd love to see/hear her met production as the queen of the night (the Noh inspired version)... the video I could find from that production is Erika Miklosa, who's good but i'm just too spoiled by Diana Damrau's queen not to feel critical of anyone else...

Diana sounds so great as Pamina! I'll always remember her days when she was the fantastic Queen
@miesermogelvogel She sang the Queen part of the run and Pamina for most of them. I think Erika Miklósa did the ret of them.
Utterly DIVINE!!!!
magnífico...mejor imposible...madre mía!!!
You probably know all this too, but she's gonna do Rigoletto at the Met, and 2010-11 i think? she's in Le Comte de Ory with Joyce DiDonato! Two goddesses in one production :] I'd kill to see Le Comte.. lol
I was wishing a happy birthday to Frau Damrau ^^
Sensational. WOW!
No, I couldn't :( I was really busy! I'll tell you about it in a mail ^^
best pamina ever.
Wow - Sublime.
No lo sé todavía. Sorpresa ^^
Pamina is supposed to by a light lyric. However, Diana Damrau is considered a coloratura.
Shared feeling ;-)
Yes, she's a lyric :)
Unfortunately, I don't think she will ever sing Tosca... Sigh! For one role in which she can actually kill the bad guy! LOL
@Aniretak205 haha... mein gott. love it.
she really can do anything, but that´s what a
primadonna must can do and i think she will be a primadonna one day
I prefer Roschmann in this role because her voice has a lighter, brighter quality more suited to a teenage rolle - Diana Damrau has a darker tone to a voice that makes it wonderful, but maybe not for this. That aside, the technique and generally the whole thing was beautiful (:

Miklósa?!?!?!
Espero que no haya sido ella, no lo soportaría :O
Gracias, gacias, pequeño saltamontes XDDDD
ohhh when was her bday?:(
May 31st :)
Hahaha
Isn't it supposed to be that way? lol
xDDDDD
Oh, I don't like her either, don't worry xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
She's beautiful, this rendition is gorgous, but that dress! Mein Gott, it's the ugliest thing I've ever seen "grace" a woman's body.
