    This takes me back to better times. Times of a mix of rapeman, sonic youth, shockabilly and of course psychic TV / throbbing gristle and Coil. But no band since have used harmonics like these guys ... CABLES soaked with KEROSENE forever !!!

    • @plasticpots2604
      @plasticpots2604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      is that how they get that whirring sound? also how do they make it sound so metallic? at times guess almost synth like at times, been trying to replicate the sound for awhile but damn it doesn't even come close to the power grinder esque sounds of steve albini.

    • @SilverTheJohnny
      @SilverTheJohnny 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@plasticpots2604 albini used two metal picks bound together, and had some distortion pedal as well as the famous harmonic percolator. he used a single coil guitar as well I believe. all that doesn't even begin to capture the sound, however!

    • @ModernDevotion
      @ModernDevotion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@plasticpots2604 cold fizzy distortion like a ds-1 in the “wrong” settings and it almost like he used a detune effect to get that chorus without the lfo movement sound. Combined with the metal picks and general shrill guitar that should be a start.

      I still remember walking into wax Trax records in Denver one fine fall day in 1986 and hearing “Keosene” blasting away on their stereo. Instantly hooked. Still a favorite all these years later. (I was lucky in that they got a hold of some bootleg 7” copies of these sessions a couple of years later, after BB had split. Still have that one as well.)

    First hear BB on a compilation. It sounded so different from the hardcore and punk going on. Got all the records, including the 7" and bootlegs. I got to see them once in Chicago. Amazing. Saw Rapeman in Washington DC and Shellac 3 times. I met Steve Albini when he was recording a live Digits record. He wasn't anything like I expected, I asked him about his amp and he told me exactly what he was using (Marshal head with a Fender Bass amp for the low end, because you can play it as loud as you want and it won't break up).

    • @Erichhh

      I wondered that same thing. I think JP let each band select the optimal mix to their preference, vs. the albums where a producer's ego determines it.

    • @JackFromBeatStrings
      @JackFromBeatStrings 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That's a consideration, except I believe Albini himself recorded the original albums. In the case of Dead Billy he has stated many times that he couldn't get the sounds he wanted on that first EP because he recorded it in his small apartment where he had neighbors and couldn't turn in up as loud as he wanted to.

      The CD releases of Big Black's stuff is notoriously shitty. I think they've cleaned it up now but there's still a lot of garbage rips online that are low quality, tinny and weak. The vinyl releases by contrast sound amazing. Half convinced this is because Steve is a purist who hates CD's (see the liner notes for the rich man's 8 track tape). If you're just talking about the production then the early stuff does sound like shit yeah. The Roland TR 606 does not sound great anymore and the guitar tone's much meeker than on their later albums.
