I had a cat for 23 years. She was born in my house and spent her entire life with me. She would always sleep with me and had to actually be touching me while sleeping at night. In the summer she would just be barely touching me, and in the colder months she had to be actually laying on me. Part of it was warmth, but the main reason was she felt safe by touching me. She could drift into deep sleep because she knew she was protected when touching me. Her mother was a feral cat who had a litter in my garage, then lefty as soon as they were weaned. I found homes for the others but kept my little troublemaker. She always had a little of that feral cat in her, except with me. I've never had a cat so attached to me and so detached from any other human. She would nap around the house in the day, but at night, no matter what the circumstances, she had to be touching me while I slept. She passed about two years ago at 23. After a few months of grieving, I heard about this older cat whose human servant had passed away and the family had taken this 10-year-old Tortie to the shelter. She wasn't doing well at the shelter so I adopted her and brought her home. Being an older cat she had completely different habits than I was used to, and it was pretty clear that this cat never slept in the bed with her previous servant, and it is my belief that her previous owner took good care of her, but it wasn't as affectionate of a relationship as I had with my previous devious one. She just needed space, particularly at night while sleeping. It's been about a year, and she has slowly started being more cuddly, and occasionally I'll wake up and she is snuggled up to me, but one wrong twitch and she bolts, which tells me she just never had that kind of relationship with her previous human servant. Eventually I suspect she will be a full blown cuddle-bug at night like my last cat, but she spent 10 years not having the option (I suspect due to her behavior) I guess my point is that cats certainly respond to cues from their humans, and even if it's a foreign concept or previously not allowed, they will eventually become snuggle buddies if and when they feel comfortable.
