Mounting a Harbor Freight winch on my new trailer (Winch review, sort of)

  • I bought a new trailer for moving mowers and other small to medium equipment, and decided to mount a winch to make pulling things onto it way easier. I also kind of review the winch as I go.

I hear you!! I just blew over $2,000 on a brand new Carry-On 7.5 x 12 utility trailer because I was sick of the crap that was up for sale around me in Wisconsin.

I had been looking for a used car trailer on Facebook marketplace. Prices were all over the map. Real cheap ones were 20 year old clapped out junk, or homemade, and or no title. Decent trailers were as you said 2/3rds or more the price of a new one. I did as you, and said screw this amd just bought a brand new one.

Yea they’re all pretty slow. I’m not in a rush, as long as it pulls it up!

I had the same issue and ended up doing the same went to Northern tool bought 5x10 3 years ago that 6x12 single axle I think is ideal! If I was doing it over today would be my choice💯👍🏾

Yea my biggest requirement was the 6’ wide. They had a 6x10 but the 2 extra feet was like $200 so I figured get the 12. I had a 5x8 that was fine but some mowers would barely fit. And I’m lucky I had this one when I picked up a zero turn the other day. Thanks for watching everything! I subscribed and will be checking your videos out

thanks for posting nice install ,getting ready to do the same,,hey just a thought should stand off to the side when winching and throw a heavy blanket on the cable so if somthing lets go it dosnt hit you

That is a nice trailer. I've been wanting a tandem axle 6 x 12. Not too large to tow around regularly but strong enough for a small tractor. Nice job on the winch install. I woulda wanted to ride the mower up, too! I'm about to turn 43...

First of all great video. I seriously had the same winch open. The box was like where is the plate come to find out it doesn’t come with it. Dammit trip back to HarborFreight by the plate which I didn’t notice they had on the shelf when I went through there my fault. One thing I like about your video was even when you made a couple little boo-boos by. Pulling the mower up on the trailer without it being connected you didn’t edit that out which was nice. Anybody that had a trailer has done something similar I know I have. But leaving it in the video shows a touch of class. It is funny though I have my trailer. I was like man I need a winch on this saying that already purchased a winch. I thought I would if anybody else has done this it’s like you have the exact trailer I got a exact winch. I don’t have any complaints and there’s nothing I’m going to tell you that you should’ve done or could’ve done. Just a good video from start to finish. Thank you very much.

Weld on a flat piece of bar on the a frame or install a toolbox & bolt the winch to that instead of the frame. That c channel is going to be all sorts of bent pulling stuff like that.

I’ve moved probably 15-20 machines just like it is and it’s not even alittle bent

That's awesome. I am planning something similar. Wondering how long your battery would last when not connected to a running vehicle?

    • @GormanRepairs
      @GormanRepairs  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

It lasts at least a few times winching something up before I charge it up again. I honestly don’t know how many times it would go until the battery dies though

I just stuck a good battery in there that I had laying around. It’s a group 27 starting battery. And that’s a marine battery box you can purchase from any marine supply place

After watching the video I was wondering if anyone had ever told you they thought you were an accident waiting to happen?
My recommendation would be that no person should ever install a winch the way you installed this winch and winch plate.
    1. The part you were calling a "cross member" is actually a simple "top frame rail" and it IS NOT designed to be a "structural member".
    2. With you sitting on the riding mower while operating the winch, you placed yourself at a great risk of physical harm should the cable break or if the frame rail should give way under stress, which it almost did.
    3. Following the same procedure as was performed in this video will cause damage to equipment and could get you seriously injured or killed.

Thank you for the insight. The winch is rated for 2500 lbs. It had an actual pull load of no more than maybe 100lbs or so pulling the rolling mower and me. All that winch will ever pull is mowers and other light things with wheels up. That’s not cable-snapping cut your head off kind of force with a cable snapping, and how likely would it be to snap at not even 10% of its rated capacity? Also I’ve moved maybe 20 mowers with it with absolutely no problems and no bending of the top rail.

@@GormanRepairs I sincerely hopre you understand that I was not trying to be disrespectful. I can tell you that the best way to remedy your winch thing would be to weld a piece of angle iron or square stock from the top rail on each side of the winch, to the structural trailer frame at the "V" behind the trailer jack. I would also consider welding a piece of square stock in between the added supports at the top rail. My primary concern is that most people may not comprehend the fact that you don't intend to over stress the trailer while using the winch. Problem is, most people aren't that smart and they just do the "monkey see, monkey do" thing.
      Again, no disrespect intended sir.

    Dude-- eye protection??
Also, my experience with winches of that size, is that they work best mounted right in the middle, inside a trailer tongue box or even cheap plastic toolbox lifted just to a height where the hook can come out above the deck of the trailer. When it's the height you put it at, it wants to drag the object over the end of the gate versus supplying consistent pulling so you get a rolling action... Just my humble opinion. Maybe you had better luck than me. I hope you have and continue to do so... I hate having to work harder.

use the winch to lift the gate
