I don't know, if it's canon, probably not, but there were some SMB comics (they were called super mario adventures). in one (maybe that comic even introduced him for the first time, but i don't really know) comic, mario was going to meet again his childhood friend, wich was wario. but wario somehow remembered his childhood days with mario differently (sorry for grammar). whenever they were playing some games, wario always had to play as someone, who always lost or ended badly. so he wanted to make a revenge on mario by offering him to go in his castle, where he planned this revenge, but he lost anyway. I found the comics on the internet for free (I think they were originally a part of some magazine. maybe nintendo power) here's the link: www.yoshiart.com/comics.php . these comics were pretty good (at least better than the TV series)

In a nutshell, Mario gets kidnapped and a man in a yellow suit with an upside down M (or a W) takes his place. Mario ends up putting the creep to justice along with his rescuers, but the legend of Mario's evil clone, Wario, lives on. Since then he's been considered a regular brother in the canon of Mario's family, along with their dorky whino of a sibling Waluiji.
Those coins where most likely his. Also, this is taken out of context and is probably the end of one of Mario's adventures. At least, that's how I took it.

Its not like in super mario land 2: 6 golden coins where he steals marios castle, here he was just minding his own business. I could see you were going for a super smash bros brawl feel but i still feel bad for wario
