Gentrification is about PRETENDING to help then raise the prices of everything so high that the original inhabitants can't afford to live there Anymore. Years ago, my neighborhood was nice, rents fairly low. Then Ames and Kmart were closed. They replaced them with Home Depot and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Then one by one, the Starbucks showed up. We have FOUR of them within a two block radius. Then came The Noodle Company and all the other mayonnaise businesses. Rents went up 40%. An apartment that was $900 became $1,400. Then more. Now the same apartment BEGINS at $1,700. My neighbors were Black and Latino with a few Muslims, too (all wonderful, helpful people). Now we have rude ass whites with dog shit all over the property. Gentrification is horrible.
Same, but I live in Austin. There have been so many changes that the original Austinites do not live in the city anymore. The culture doesn't exist anymore.
I never heard about her until the HBO show. BET needs to learn how to market(commercial)there new shows on other tv channels, Amazon, TH-cam, ads on apps. I truly feel who every is truly over BET is trying to make it fail. The shows that BET does have comes on late instead rerunning throughout the day. Instead of old reruns all day. Even Oprah channel OWN realize that method won’t work so she made her own shows and now have a few on Netflix’s and stuff.
@Rhiannon Xuela Marie I do the same is Spain. If I see a Starbucks in the neighborhood I'm at it means is Hella pricey, so I shouldn't but anything in the stores or markets. XD
Sadly, BET already cancelled the show sis. (I'm still mad about it 🤬) But support her by watching A Black Lady Sketch Show on HBO. She stars in it, writes on it and is one of the EP's along with Issa Rae.
@@Cookie4XO - No, BET cancelled it two years ago and apparently didn't do a good job of promoting it before that. Too many people (myself included) hadn't even heard of it until now. They should have marketed it on Twitter, Facebook, and here on TH-cam.
Black folks...OWN YOUR HOMES AND SOME OTHER LAND AROUND YOUR COMMUNITY! Control your city government, write the laws to favor yourselves and handicap developers sell extra land for outrageously exorbitant prices, possibly with partial ownership and ongoing income...
I'm from Miami and I never looked at South Florida like this but I feel more enlightened about the history and current state of the area. This was an awesome feature!
Ownership is the key to saving our neighborhoods. I saw the same thing here in BK. Mayo packets damn near have taken over Crown Heights, Bed Stuy, Bushwick...Now I'm seeing it The BX.
Ooh this Brandon dude is ca-yuuuuute!!!! On a more serious note, I agree with Valencia. I do hope many more people are able to own in Little Haiti and other high lying areas.
This is so on the nose accurate. Where I live was based on your income. It's in a decent area that is mostly retired old people and low income families. The property has a new owner. I've noticed that since Donald drumf started giving the rich tax cuts, they've been buying up low income property in my area. They've slapped wood trimming over the roofs, to cover up the mold, then painted the buildings. It like putting a band-aid on a bullet hole. They're only renovating the empty apartments, but they've hiked up the rent for all apartments to a ridiculous amount. When I told the lease office that they're price gauging to drive the present residence out, the office girl said it was the competitor's prices of other apartments in the area. They want to push us into slums that they have denied any state or government upgrades from. We know what's up, because they're trying to make history repeat itself.
The exact same thing is happening in my neighborhood. 2 years ago my apartment was 790 and now they want 1150 with no changes except painting natural brick buildings grey. I hate these people that just want MONEY and don't care if they are ruining peoples lives. The saddest part is this IS the slums. These buildings are from the 1950's and are the cheapest places in my area, shootings outside and monthly raids from the DEA. Everyone in my building is sharing food and helping each other to pay rent because no one can afford it. Unless we move far away from our jobs or put multiple families in a 1 bed unit we can't afford to live.
Robin is so smart...I'm glad her show is now in HBO. Well guys saying shame on BET, well you all should have been watching the show so it wouldn't have been cancelled.
With gentrification and ownership power.... taking into account the “there’s no money” factory just addressed.... how would those who took/take ownership of their lands/businesses then deal with taxes? That’s another power of gentrification, where things are overpriced, especially property taxes, and ple are forced/closed out.
Local gentrification is the equivalent of the White Savior complex when people go abroad for missions trips. They think they're doing good, and to an extent, they are, but not in a way that empowers the people who already live in that area.
wow i live in a country the whole western region is about 23 feet under sea level and no one running to buy up houses and and land in the eastern part of my country that is above sea level
The people need to lobby their economic development departments. Business owners need to secure their own expansion drafts and loans Do some ED research watch and work together create an area incubator for black investors and business people. Create a unique ethnic environment that will attract investors of colour.
SHAME on BET for cancelling this brilliant show!
Shame on me for never watching it until she got the HBO gig. But i'm fully supporting her on the HBO show
@@smthmn so glad she's back on TV, the nightly show was bomb!
And now they wanna run clips when her new show on HBO premieres. F u BET. We needed this for the culture especially now.😤
Damn shame!
Indeed! Truth is the new hate speech

It has happened in Broward County already. (2014-2020).
SF CA here and yes it's true
And it is the same for Brooklyn, NY but also Nothing Hill, London
Woww. Why did they cancel this show. It is educational and funny at the same time. She needs to bring this show to HBO too.
Check out the Amber Ruffin show
She did.
You just answered. I was so sad when it did end
They danced around the basic facts..... they price us out when they gentrify these neighborhoods.....
michael landers That was said Brotha ✌🏾
That's what they did to downtown Charleston. Look at it now compared to 15 to 20 yrs ago.

Same in south Carolina

It's too intelligent for "the community" I think. They'd rather have another franchise of basketball thot's or real housewives.

I’m mad I didn’t know about this show before ABLSS I’m sad it got canceled
Poor ratings I guess. Not many people watch BET cause we didn't know about it. It poor promotions as well. Take your pick 🤷😤
Gateways are...
Coffee shops
Yoga studios
Local breweries ....seen it in my own neighborhood that is predominantly black and latino.
shontapl Facts!!
The cancellation of this show just demonstrates that BET is one of the black community's biggest freinemies.
Why am I just now learning about this show? I’ve been binge watching these brilliant clips for the past three days!!!

We trying.
I'm from Miami and what there showing is true.... They are trying to take over that community ... Smh
Proud to be a Hispanic home owner!
Love your reporting and your style. So happy to see this show having its own voice and focusing on stories that other networks ignore.
That real estate agent is..something else damn.
Corporate shill and sell out for sure

Im hella glad “Magic City” was clarified🤣
That was a really good segment!!
Shemar Moore high riser....LOL.....he cute tho girl..
It's an issue that affects the global poor. Naomi Klein did a good job of elaborating the concept as "Disaster Capitalism"
OMG so glad to know atleat 16 people have reas her work, on here!

"Once you can own it, you'll fix it yourself." That's strong.
I absolutely can't believe I'm just learning who this brilliant person is

Actually who made the potato salad is higher on the list... tasteless food is as important as food poisoning.👌🏾
I was looking for someone else who noticed that 😂😂😂
@@sapphirejones7302 I have had a coworker that was told: "Nah, you just get the plasticware."

Without ownership they will move you out.
Farisa Smith They also try they hand when you are a home owner with property taxes.
RT is a funny azz girl. The way she made this topic of climate gentrification bite size & relatable was awesome
The people make the coach and if there’s no people then there’s no coach✊🏾I’m all for it.
Seemed like there was hella chemistry between Robin and that cute young dude
I’m surprised Comedy Central didn’t pick this up
Probably the most educational skit she has made.
Love Theide's personality. Also, love this. Ownership.
She is brilliant
Thank you!
"No purtorican" was one too, the signs made me sick, Robin Thede deserves all the comedy shows.
So basically because of Miami’s racist policies, they sectioned themselves off in an area that’s going to be flooded 😩😂

It's a shame that we're having the same conversations year after year. It almost like things haven't changed! 🥴
THIS...🙌🏾✊🏾
Damn! Lovely section on my county!
WOW THIS WAS DOPE, DIDNT EXPECT THIS LESSON.......THIS SHOW IS DOPE + FUNNY AF
I lived in the Bywater before the storm and can’t afford it now. They pushed everyone out.
Gentrification ain't helping the original owners. It's all about the money.

Can we just get a moment of silence for how beautiful Robin is? Damn girl.
