    Excellent filming.close enough to show how even water takes a long time to extinguish a fire that has got that big and hot, just turning to steam in places. Fire service did a great job WEll done and god bless you all.

    Many large scale building projects such as this apartment building contain both flammable and non flammable materials that why it takers so long to extinguish such a blaze. This particular fire was later ruled as arson by police and fire officials and the person responsible was convinced of first degree arson and sentenced to a minimum of ten years in prison

    couple things impressed me,
    In the first video at about 9:30 you can see three master streams on the left side of the frame, It looks to me like things were hot enough that they were turning to steam by the time the water got close to the fire.
    I don't see how, as a fireman, rolling up to something like that, and with my 3 inch master stream, thinking, how is this going to make a difference?
    and third, the LA water system could keep up. It'd be an interesting piece of gee whiz information to know the GPM the fire department was flowing at the peak of the fire.

    Sometimes it is all about cooling it down enough that it doesn't spread. It is going to burn no matter what but cooling it down some keeps it from spreading. Pallet yard fires are the same way, infinite fuel with infinite air and not way to really cool it down except to soak the walls before they fall into the center. Then when they get low enough you can hit the core.

    . . . this was a nice one . . . the effects of the FF's efforts were mostly to cool the highway / surroundings . . . nothing at hands to put out such a fire . . . if they had targeted just to protect the surroundings the fire wouldn't even have lasted as long as it would have run out of fuel faster . . . .

    Good materials that have been used for this large construction or not ;-)
    how can it be possible to build such a large building in wood, and indeed in the center of town just up to other buildings, I can not understand it
    but please tell me I'm interested. (indeed)
    by the way, shows the scaffolding enough what is best to build in = concrete and iron reinforcement,
    Is the cost of wood versus concrete that determines the build quality, and what with the cost of building insurance it should be cheaper with a more fire-safe construction.

      The similar Houston fire started on the roof in the middle of a work day; I can't imagine any competent arsonist would work that way. I *do* wonder if developers may start re-thinking using all-wood construction for projects of this magnitude

    • @BuckHypervisor
      @BuckHypervisor 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      JGC Cincy Constructing buildings with the matchsticks that pass for 2x4's these days is the cheapest way to do it. Since we've collectively bought into the notion that the cheapest, most profitable option is always the right one, I doubt big developers will give the notion of constructing safer and less flammable buildings a second thought. Granted, this building burned extra quickly because it wasn't finished, but TH-cam is overflowing with examples of recently constructed houses and apartment buildings that burn so fast that firefighters can't make an interior attack safely and have no choice but to throw water on them from outside and try to protect exposures. Unfortunately, this has become the American way of doing things...cheap at any cost.

    • @Tom-Lahaye
      @Tom-Lahaye 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Jason Bogard Only way to stop this absurdity is more stringent building code, for this type of building.
      A detached family home out of wood? Ok, as long as there's enough separation between them to prvent the fire jumping over.
      A 500 apartment complex in downtown LA with a similar building on the other side of the street, entirely of wood? Insane!
      There's no country in Europe where building code allows such type of construction.
      Large buildings have to be steel (with adequate fire proofing) or concrete, walls must withstand fire for several hours, and they do, because a apartment fire is in most cases limited to the apartment where the fire started (in some cases fire spreads trough window and door openings to upstairs apartments)
      Even for a detached wooden family home regulations are stringent (eg in Scandinavia were this type of home is common, the distance between houses is large) and in some countries like the Netherlands it's almost impossible to get permission for a wooden house.
      A ban on wooden construction in citties has a long history in Europe, eg after the Great London Fire in 1666, and after many other medieval citties burned down to the ground.
      But as long as the money from big companies dictates politics in the States, there's not much going to change.

    • @bnadit1949
      @bnadit1949 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the issue with California. Wood is the best for earthquakes on a performance/dollar scale.
      To build a steel structure to resist the earthquakes we have is a very expensive venture. Concrete won't even survive an earthquake, just crack and crumble.
      Not to mention if the "Big One" hits nothing will be left standing, regardless of quality, so wood makes for the easiest material for rescuers to preform rescues from.
      You have to look at all of these factors, yes it catches fie easily, but it provides the best survival chance in in earthquake. You get one or the other, not both.

    • @frankvandendool882
      @frankvandendool882 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reinforced concrete may be more expensive to build, but how much did this burned down building cost? and the cost of the new building? There are concrete buildings all over the world in earthquake area's. You are lying.

      Dj Djero its a pretty good chance that all that scaffolding was written off and hauled to the scrapyard after the fire cooled off. No way any of it was still usable afterwards.

    Spontaneous Combustion: friction between real estate values, property taxes, insurance premiums, building costs, and poof, up in smoke. I'm impressed at how far those pumps can throw water off the tower ladders, that's a pretty long distance. Great job in keeping the fire from jumping the road where this was filmed.

    Seeing this go up in flames makes me wonder how safe the completed building would have been in the event of a fire, although there might have been some fire retardant materials added later in the build. In Britain there have in recent years blocks of flats that have burnt to the ground, some of them timber framed. Luckily the fires haven't spread so fast and everyone has escaped in time, but these people will have lost everything. As nobody is killed, these fires don't make the headlines much, but eventually someone won't be so lucky.

    I really wonder what made this whole block burn like hell; I mean: in a building under construction there is concrete and bricks. Both materials are not flammable.

      In California building codes are different due to seismic activity, AKA eArtHqUaKeS !!! Lots of bricks is a no-no.

      Yes, but the fire is raging as if tons of flammable material (if you listen closely, you hear a series of small explosion, like from propane or acetylene cylinders going off) had been stored inside.

      @dougdiplacido2406 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +James Weber Putting in the firewalls is part of the construction process. As the framing is done, the building is very vulnerable to a massive fire because the drywall and firewalls are not in place yet.

      Because the building can collapse unto the street, injuring Firefighters and damaging equipment.

    • @MB12116

      firelensman yea I was realizing that was a dump idea after I said that. The Rotors would probably spread the embers and the cooter would probably get smoked out and the wind generated by the copter would probably be annoying. And you get what 350 gallons of water per drop and a engine can do 1000gpm or something like that. Thanks for the reply.

      Keri Whitmire You think it’s out, but there could still be a source burning under all that, that you couldn’t see to the naked eye. So firefighters will normally stay on scene for an extended timeZ

    I just don't get it. Why the houses in USA are made from paper? The structure of an apartment block made from wood? Where is the the steel? It's obvious the firefighters can't put out the inicial fire and save this construction.
    In Portugal were i live all the houses and apartments are made from concrete, bricks and steel. So if a fire start in a floor the firefighters can save the building

      Rufus Moore Because not all types of 🔥 need foam. Halogens are used to different classified types of fires, or when dealing with specific issues. Such as in warehouses, goods or aircraft that use fuel or electricity.

    This fire cost a fortune for any civil person. Send the bill to Ron Veldhuijzen van Zanten at Bonar BV, Arnhem Holland. He is on LinkdeIn too. But he will listen and answer when you get a excellent lawyer to go right to him and sue him. It will not cost you anything. Cause when a excellent lawyer rips him a part it will cost a Civil Person nothing. Cause this guy at Bonar is truly educated and sees no reason to pass conflagrations like this. As civil and just for Innocent Civilians to live.
