London’s housing crisis: life inside a derelict estate | Times Reports

  • The Aylesbury Estate in south London has been earmarked for demolition since 2005. Dozens of families remain on the estate, waiting to be relocated by Southwark council.
London's deepening housing crisis has pushed more people into homelessness.
Fatima, eight, has been homeless for nearly all her life, living with her two older brothers and mother in temporary accommodation on the estate, a sprawling, rundown block of flats, the largest public housing estate in Europe.
“We have so many mice, they eat everything in the house,” says her mother, Aminata Diallo, 45, a cleaner. There is damp on the walls, mould on the floor, leaks staining the ceiling and peeling wallpaper, covered by children’s maps. “The radiator is not strong enough so when winter comes it’s very cold in the house,” says her eldest son, Salia, 22, who is at college. “When you go outside and then come in, it’s even worse. It’s colder inside. It makes us sick most of the time.”
Fatima often has to take days off school when she gets ill, unable to get better. They are waiting to be placed in permanent accommodation by Southwark council. “The council tells us to wait,” says Diallo. “But we don’t know how long we will be there for. We are always calling them but it’s always the same response: wait.”

As London's housing crisis deepens, many are asking what should be done to stem the rise in homelessness.

I can’t believe the council have left the families living in such dire conditions for so long! It’s really not good for their health being exposed to the damp. It must be virtually impossible to keep any rooms dry and warm, all the heating would disappear into the huge empty block.
My heart goes out to the families, the council is an absolute disgrace and should be ashamed. They pay themselves huge salaries and pension contributions and do not look after the families first. It’s high time we got rid of House of Lords and Commons, drain the filth and start with a new party for the people, by the people. We need to take our county back from the Crown! People need to wake up and come together, support one another. None of would want to live like this, open your heart and think about if it’s was your family! Vote with your voice!

I was born and brought up on the dog kennel hill estate in East Dulwich in 1978
And I can tell you local councils don’t care that you’re home has a problem or that there is a problem with the estate
I lived there for 20 years and we always had this problem
Especially in 2000 when it got much worse I’m glad we moved
Once you live in an estate you are forgotten about for the simple fact you are poor

😂 The people still living in that estate were offered housing but refused rehousing because it doesn't meet their "requirements".

I am a Fifth Generation Canadian and I was talking to my Friend about my Old Neighborhood and how it's really gotten bad with the Apartments and how bad they are. She explained that if the residents are immigrants there's nothing they can do, they would rather live there than be homeless and the Landlords don't do any upkeep. It's heartbreaking. I saw some of the Apartments on TV and it's disgusting, Cockroaches, mice, rats, sinks with brown stains etc.

    • @mspsys
      @mspsys 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Some countries, such as S. Korean, Japan, and Israel, only accepts immigrants who have job offers. This way, they can bringing in cheap labor from overseas to fill labor intensive and low-paying jobs no one wants to do. S. Korea would actually collapse without this cheap labor. For laborers, they would make 4, 5 times of what they would make at home so they are happy. It's a win/win situation. Immigration is a good thing. USA was built on hard working immigrants.
So you see, immigration is not the problem. The problem is that politicians and policy makers in your country are retards. LOL

@@Critic224 farm job wages are not high enough to attract regular workforce so immigrants from poor countries are needed. The competition for professional occupations, (doctors, engineers, IT etc) are fierce and the most academically inclined fills those positions. Productive immigrants, either highly motivated to fill the low paying jobs or highly qualified to fill processional jobs, aren't the problem. They only help the country they immigrate to. I am sorry to say this but there are certain demographics, people from certain countries that do not work, do not have the discipline, and only seek social welfare. And the UK, brilliantly chose, almost exclusively, to import those demographics. LOL
