What happens when autistic kids become adults? | Ohio State Medical Center

  • A new program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center offers primary medical care and social support for the often “forgotten” patients who have autism. The Center for Autism Services and Transition (CAST), is a clinic specifically designed to care for adults with autism spectrum disorders.
    Christopher Hanks, MD, an Internal Medicine physician at Ohio State, says that the center wants to provide a place for adults to come for medical care knowing that there's an entire staff who truly understands their needs. Dr. Hanks says CAST can also help with things like continuing education courses or job opportunities to help adults with autism transition into a world that can be very intimidating.

    As someone with autism (I’m on the much more mild side but still have issues with schooling, etc to give you an idea), I can confirm that we are a tightly weaved community that loves to help each other and see each other grow and thrive. I was in special needs schooling for 3 and a half years, and when you’re in that sort of situation, you feel like a family. Everyone loves each other and we all look out for each other. I’ve since returned to normal schooling and things have been going great, but sometimes I do miss the family feeling I got while at special needs schooling, which is why I’m so grateful that people are dedicated to creating autism resources. I actually live in Columbus and while I myself probably won’t require these, I would definitely consider contributing to them because the more people you have supporting you that understand first hand, really makes a big difference. Just to everyone that does their best to make our lives better: thank you. It truly means the world.

    I was diagnosed with autism when I was 9, I’m high functioning but I really struggled with my social skills and school wasn’t always easy for me because of my learning disability. But I was lucky and had parents that did whatever they could to support me and help me succeed, now I’m a teachers assistant working with high school students with autism and other special needs, and I’m really grateful I am able to help my students the way I was helped when I was their age

    As older parents with an autistic only son, we really worry about what will become of our son after we pass away.

    • @devonkelly44

      I think any parent worries about that, but especially ones with children who have special needs. I hope you can find some comfort for the future when you think about the resources your son has. The world is getting so much more open-minded about autism every day. Im sure you’ll both be here for many more years so there will be even more positive changes as you all grow.
      Take care ❤❤

  • @eden.nd.
    @eden.nd. 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

    This is fantastic, there really is so little for autistic adults to support independence, it's usually either having a lot of care from professionals & family or just struggling through life unsupported which leaves so many people not able to live a happy healthy life. I also think having autistic teachers & TAs in autistic schools is a really good idea, they can bring in knowledge that no amount of academia could provide.

    With respect, most of us aren't like this (they make ASD look like down syndrome in the video), and are able to blend in via masking. For us, it's not a "disorder" that one treats, but is a condition in which we communicate and process data input differently than others. It's a linguistic/language difference. We only mask who we are to be less socially awkward and to fit in.

    Was diagnosed in 1965 with autism. The specialist at that time said to my mum, “it’s a shame that there aren’t special schools for children like me” - 1965. Can’t imagine how that’d hurt a parent. Since then it’s been a mess of menial labour work, arrests, firings, social rejections and exclusion, alcohol abuse, partnerlessness, childlessness and living alone. It’s difficult to find any blessings out of that, but….maybe it’s God working through me, I just don’t know.

We're still ironing out the kinks- such as PTSD from High school bullies and a serious fear of public bathroom handryers- but I'm looking forward to my life, and I think a lot of autistic people should too. Autism isn't an illness bud, and applying physical punishment to ASD individuals is like yelling at someone suffering from a migraine.

      Back in your day, autistic kids existed but got traumatized by this kind of stuff, and pretended to be “normal” in order to not get abused. And instead of being called autistic, they were called all sorts of other negative terms like “brat” and “weird”
