    Hope you're all doing well in this crazy time - I thought it might be a good time to try something new with a spin-off of the Let's Watch segment - STUDENT VS. PROFESSIONAL! Don't worry, it's not a 'competition' but rather a way of seeing how professional players and developing players are getting closer and closer every year, and I'm interested to see what are the tiny differences separating their two performances.
    So in today's video, we compare two performances of the popular marimba solo "Over The Rainbow", a highly polished competition performance from a student performer (Jonathan Kauffman) and a professional-level concert performance from the composer/arranger himself (Robert Oetomo). The differences may surprise you!

    Hope you're all doing well this week! I wanted to try something different with this week's episode, so here's an interesting take on the 'levels of X' format with a very polished competition performance from Jonathan Kauffman compared to a professional concert performance from Robert Oetomo - and you'll be surprised at the differences!
    Anyway, if you want to check out the original videos they're in the description, and as always I'm looking for more awesome videos from you guys to watch during this period at www.adamtanpercussion.com/submit :)
    Stay at home and stay safe!!

    Hey, that's me! Thanks for the feature Adam!
    To anyone wondering what mallets I was using, I used a graduated set of Thomas Burritts:
    Mallet 1: TB2
    Mallet 2: TB3
    Mallet 3: TB3
    Mallet 4: TB4
    If you decide to use these mallets, then I would highly recommend changing the mallet 4 to a TB3. Looking back at this the TB4 was WAY too loud and articulate for this piece. Hope this helps!

      Jonathan Kauffman thank you for playing the arrangement so wonderfully; truly is a wonderful performance! And congratulations on receiving second prize!
      You are a fine musician that only has just begun flourishing. Keep up the great work and keep working hard. I can’t wait to see more of your performances in the years to come.
      All the very best and take care!

      @@AdamTanPercussion I think some students might be interested in a how/what to practice at home video, especially since a lot of kids don't have access to a marimba right now. I mean the ghetto way is to tape up your floor, but there's a lot of different ways to go about practicing without a marimba.

    For me as a keyboard player what I find to be challenging (being taught in a marching band setting) is the big difference in technique when it comes to concert setting and solo performance pieces. While the over all technique is the same (use mainly your wrists no arm etc) the play style and is completely different from each other and certain technique differences is hard to master (like making your wrists more loose for glicandos). Marching band is very strict and linear in wrist movement and play style where as concert and solo pieces requires multiple variations to technique and is very loose and requires an individual players own interpretation of the piece to shine through.

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is a really interesting way of looking at it! I believe that players of both disciplines can learn a lot from each other, and sometimes it's good to come from a fresh perspective :)

      I have a hard time switching styles also but it may also be because I have more of an interest with marching band or ensemble preformance, I don’t care much for concert setting mallet but I am trying to get more into solo playing so these videos are helpful lol 🙂

    Both performances were very impressive. The level of performance exhibited by Jonathan is very strong, and I believe that as he continues to play, he will develop some of the nuance that Adam is discussing. Another factor I am considering is the mallets being used. Robert is using a graduated set of mallets, but what is Jonathan using? My students typically use whatever mallets we provide, limiting their understanding of sound texture. If Jonathan is using a matched set of field grade mallets, his ability to play with more sensitivity could be impaired. Overall, excellent performances from both. Thank you Adam for the great insight.

    Sometimes during competition playing the players change the composition especially the dynamics according to what the judges want to hear, you will see this a lot in ensembles the judges aren’t usually looking at any sheet music but critiquing the story telling with dynamics. Hope that was helpful, I’m no where close to being a professional but I just know from experience that’s judges comments will ask to change dynamics. Love the video 🙂

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is true! I do still think that the dynamics in Robert's sheet music and Robert's performance in this instance still match the overall character of 'Over The Rainbow' a bit more, and I've found that a great proportion of world-class level marimba competitions have judge panels that allow a little bit of flexibility, but still want the player to be true to the music first. Anyway, Jonathan still did a great job and it's good that we have space for freedom in music no matter where it is performed :)

    I love watching Asian marimba players because they always seem to have better touch and phrasing than American players. Their performance always seem to flow better and be more relaxed. Idk what it is about us Americans but there's a clear difference in interpretation of music and touch. 🤦🏾‍♂️
