Sages and Devas appealed to Ayyappan, who went to the jungle with bow and arrow to bring tiger milk, telling them of the sufferings they were going through because of Mahishi.Hearing this, Ayyappan killed Mahishi and relieved the grief of the gods. Swami Ayyappan, who is sitting here as a Dharmasas, is blessed in Kolam with a bow and arrow in his hand because he came with a bow and arrow to kill Mahishi.
Lord Shiva sent his Bhutaganas to assist Ayyappan who went to fetch Pulipal. This Vapuran is the leader of the Bhutaganas thus sent. Vapuran to Ayyappan is like Veeravahu to Muruga. In the battle with Mahishi, Ayyappan was supported by the Siva Bhutaganas led by Vapuran. After the death of Mahishi at the end of the war, Vabaran and Bhutaganas celebrated by dressing up and dancing. To commemorate this, hood jumping is still practiced today.
While Ayyappan was returning to the palace with the tigers, Ayyappan called Vapuran, who had come to the forest border, and ordered him to stay at Erumeli, the forest border, and guard the pilgrims coming through the forest to Sabarimala from the wild animals. Accordingly Vapuran and other Ganas stayed there and became guardian deities.

ஐயப்பனை தரிசிக்கவரும் பக்தர்கள் எரிமேலியில் ஒன்றுகூடுவர். இது சபரிமலையின் நுழைவுவாயிலாக கருதப்படுகிறது. இங்கு பந்தளமன்னன் இராஜசேகரனால் கட்டப்பட்ட தருமசாஸ்தா கோவில் உள்ளது.
மகிஷி எருமைதலையுடனும் மனித உடலுடன் இருந்தவள். அவளை வதம் செய்ததால் அந்த இடத்துக்கு எருமைகொல்லி என்று பெயர். எருமைகொல்லி நாளடைவில் எரிமேலியாக மருவியதாக கூறப்படுகிறது.
இந்த எரிமேலியில் தான் பேட்டைதுள்ளல் எனப்படும் முக்கிய நிகழ்வு நடைபெறுகிறது. இங்கு ஐயப்ப பக்தர்கள் நடனமாடுவதன் காரணம் மகிஷியின் மரணத்தோடு தொடர்புடையது.
மகிஷியை வதம் செய்த மணிகண்டன், அவளது உடல் மீது நர்த்தனம் ஆடிய போது, பூதகணங களும், தேவர்களும் தங்களது மகிழ்ச்சியை வெளிபடுத்த வேடமிட்டு நடனமாடிய இடமாக இது கூறப்படுகிறது. இந்த நிகழ்வை நினைவுகூறவே பக்தர்கள் இன்றளவும் எருமேலியில் பேட்டைதுள்ளல் எனப்படும் நடனம் ஆடுகின்றனர். அப்பொழுது
சுவாமிமார்கள் தங்களது உடலில் பல விதமான வண்ணப் பொடிகளைப் பூசிக் கொண்டு நடனம் ஆடுவர்
புலிபால் கொண்டுவரச் சென்ற ஐயப்பனுக்கு துணையாக சிவபெருமான் தன்னுடைய பூதகணங்களை அனுப்பினார். அப்படி அனுப்பப்பட்ட பூதகணங்களின் தலைவனே இந்த வாபுரன். முருகனுக்கு வீரவாகு எப்படியோ அதுபோலதான் ஐயப்பனுக்கு வாபுரன்.
மகிஷியுடனான போரில் ஐயப்பனுக்கு துணையாக வாபுரண் தலைமையிலான சிவ பூதகணங்கள் கலந்துக்கொண்டன்
போரின்முடிவில் மகிஷி வதம் செய்யப்பட்டபின், அந்த மகிழ்ச்சியை கொண்டாடும் விதமாக வாபரனும் பூதகணங்களும் வேடமணிந்து நடனமாடினர். இதனை நினைவுகூறுமாறே பேட்டைதுள்ளல் இன்றளவும் கடைப்பிடிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது.
ஐயப்பன் புலிகளோடு அரண்மனை திரும்பும் போது, காட்டின் எல்லைவரை வந்து வழியனுப்ப வந்த வாபுரனை ஐயப்பன், அழைத்து வனத்தின் எல்லையான எருமேலியிலேயே தாங்கள் தங்கி இருக்கவேண்டுமெனவும், தன்னை தரிசிக்க காட்டு வழியாக சபரிமலை வரும் பக்தர்களை கொடிய வனவிலங்குகளிலிருந்து காத்து வருமாறும் கட்டளையிட்டார். அதன்படியே வாபுரணும், மற்ற கணங்களும் அங்கேயே தங்கி காவல்தெய்வம் ஆயினர்.
எரிமேலியில் இருக்கும் இந்த தர்ம சாஸ்தா கோவிலுக்கு எதிரே ஒரு பள்ளிவாசல் உள்ளது. இது இஸ்லாமியர்கள் ஆட்சிக்காலத்தில் ஐயப்ப பக்தர்களிடம் வரிவசூலிப்பதற்காக கட்டப்பட்டது.
கிட்டதட்ட ஜெசியா வரியை போன்றதே..
இந்த வரலாற்றை அறியாத பல ஐயப்ப பக்தர்கள் வாபர சுவாமி என்ற பேட்டை சாஸ்தாவை மறந்து, வாவர் சமாதியை கும்பிட ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். ஐயப்பனுக்கும் வாபர் மசூதிக்கும் எந்த சம்பந்தமும் கிடையாது. இதை அறியாத பல ஐயப்ப பக்தர்கள் வாபர் சமாதி இருக்கும் மசூதிக்கு சென்று வருகின்றனர். இதில் வேடிக்கை என்னவென்றால்
வாவர் சமாதியில் இருப்பவர்கள் உட்பட எந்த இஸ்லாமியரும் ஐயப்ப ஸ்வாமியை நம்பவில்லை.
ஆனால் கேரளத்து தேவஸ்வம்போர்டு இதை இந்து முஸ்லீம் ஒற்றுமை என கூறி கண்டுகொள்ளவில்லை என்பதுதான் கொடுமையின் உச்சம்.
ஸ்ரீ ஐயப்ப ஸ்வாமி பற்றிய மூலநூல் பூதநாதோபாக்யானம் என்ற சமஸ்கிருத நூல் ஆகும்* இந்நூல் பிரம்மாண்ட புராணத்திற்கு உட்பட்டது. இந்நூலில் வாபர சுவாமியைப்பற்றிதான் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. வாவர் என்ற முஸ்லிம் பற்றி எந்தச்செய்தியும் இல்லை என்பதும் குறிப்பிடதகுந்தது
