Good morning BP and CP ☕️☕️👍. Another day of rain for us today. No haying till next week it looks like. I bought a new Milwaukee grease gun like that one too. My old one I’ve had for 14 years, still good, but this new one is phenomenal.

Good afternoon, BP and CP. W farms a few years ago had a bad drought. Their crops had terrible yields. That's not an easy choice to make with the barley. 👍
Cut just before, or in the milk.. or combine it.. that's always been the rule of thumb here.. yellowing from the ground up, it won't be long and it will mature out...
Hey BP and CP. Its kinda nice having a few square bales around . Need to get some made ourselves for the barn. Interesting dilemma on the barley. If you need the hay, then cut it. Looks like there is grain in the heads if you can get a shot of rain in the next week or so, you would be able to harvest it. Were you going to use the grain for feed or cash??
@@bcpfarmandtrucking6560 guess that is a head scratcher. If you wait and it doesn't rain, you could have light bushel weight grain which wouldn't be worth a whole bunch. I have 40 acres of oats I was seriously thinking of using as a cash crop as we have lots of silage. Kinda watching this heat also as I maybe in the same predicament.
As green feed you have more volume of feed in that field than if you wait to combine the grain. I'd go with the feed and just don't feed your cattle grain this winter unless you have some left from last year. As you know cattle do very well on greenfeed and in winter they devour it.
I would bale what you need for feed. If you had a bale wrapper? that is what I would do with that nice feed. Cattle will love that smooth beard. Save enough for next years seed, and sell or contract the rest. If it test right you may just get malt price.
Got a few crops burned off to the south of us especially down Jeremy’s way. I’ve cut lots of barley ripe, baled and fed it, it’s just fine for feed. Barley is a bitch to dry down in the milk stage I’ve found. I’ve fed lots of rough awn barley greenfeed and yellow feed or swath grazed it with no problems at all either. That crop is definitely burning off though.
Back the crimpers off on your rollers if you cut it with the haybine, it’ll save you some of the grain. You probably know that anyway, but it makes a huge difference.

Looks like barley is just maturing early for the most part. Stressed spots always ripen faster.
