    There's so many stray cats close to where I live. Everytime I go out to a family diner that's about 7 minutes away I see 8 stray cats that hang out near the dumpster. They're always the same 8 cats and are always grateful for the cat food I bring them. It just recently crossed my mind that winter will be terrible for them, so I'm looking up a bunch of different ways to help. Will definitely try this out if they're still there during the colder months!

      That is great to hear there is another animal lover out there doing their part! I hope that you keep some kitties warm this winter! Thanks for watching!

      One way to help, is to PLEASE look up your town's Local TNR program. (Trap, Nueter, Release). It will get the cats and kittens trapped, nuetered, and ear marked, (then brought back to the location the cats are familiar with). This helps drastically!!
      Also- please, don't feed stray cats UNLESS you're willing to do it DAILY. this sounds mean, I'm sure- but those cats will come back to where they were FED hoping and waiting for it to happen again. And if you decide to take on that responsibility, they're yours forever..
      THANK YOU for all every one does, this world needs more people to help with these feral and community cats.

      Put some tape around the door in case the edge of the plastic is sharp.

      What's the best food to attract the ferals to the shelter? Tuna, salmon, sardines? Any of the above?

    They have cheap throw blankets in stores instead of straw. Bless your heart for caring for the strays❤️

      You can use both because straw would keep them warmer in the winter than depending on their body heat and a couple of blankets to make sure they stay warm. During the winter times the rescue group im in use straw in dog igloos to keep the stray dog(s) warm until we have a good trap to rescue them.

    Yup!! Medicinal or beer styrofoam coolers to insert. I'm still working it out myself. One volunteer taped the lids on. Hard to add new straw that way

    Need alternative to straw. It is not available in my area short of having an entire bale delivered ($$$$$). What about pine needle mulch? Redwood mulch? Coco husk mulch? Pine straw cat litter? Shredded newspapers? What else can work?

    • @NKYDIY

      That's a good idea! My cats never used it either. It is more for stray/outdoor cats that you might see around that aren't interested in coming inside.

  • @debstein4487

    can you put the water and maybe some dry food inside or will that attract animals that would attack the kitty? I like the idea of an escape hole in the back. Do you think there is a way to make these stackable? I want to make a kind of kitty condo but I don't know exactly how I could do that that would not tumble over. ideas from anyone please.

    • @NKYDIY
      @NKYDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will be making some sort of double stacked or side by side new shelter design here in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned. As far as leaving food and water out, you will always run the risk of attracting raccoons and such but as cats gotta eat right? Just try to keep an eye on it and only put the food out at certain times to cut down on wild animals sniffing it out. Thanks for watching!

    If at all possible put your shelters inside a human (preferably youth) dome camping tent. Leave the zipper part way open. It gives a lot of extra protection and warmth.

    • @NKYDIY
      @NKYDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will have to check that tent every day for feces if you try and go that route. Its a nice idea, I just worry about hygiene.

  • @jthmfreak98

    thank you for taking care of the cats!! I think I'll try my hand at making one of these for the dozens of stray kitties on my street. Do you think a couple towels or blankets would work in place of straw? And would cardboard instead of styrofoam be alright, or would that not provide enough insulation?

    • @NKYDIY
      @NKYDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would have to be pretty thick cardboard that stays dry. If that gets wet, nothing will use it....Towels and blankets would have to be checked on daily to make sure they are not soaked in urine, etc. How did it go?

  • @CatFromFL
    @CatFromFL 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I piece of wide pvc pipe would make it more coyote proof and so cat doesn’t get cut. Just cut to fit and tape with gorilla tape or strong duck tape. We are in Florida so we have less need for insulation-

    I’m just curious if the strays used this shelter with just the one entrance... I read they wouldn’t bcz they feel trap in case of other predators is this true?

    • @NKYDIY
      @NKYDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same debate in my head. If you put a second hole then they probably would use it more, but, then the wind can rip right through it. I don't know, and escape route is nice, but so is staying warm. Its up to the cat I suppose.

    • @carolvandyke6926
      @carolvandyke6926 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't leave food inside or around the shelter the critters should leave it alone !

  • @wanalivlif
    @wanalivlif 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Does it need two holes so it doesnt feel trapped in case another animal enters?

    • @NKYDIY
      @NKYDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That would be a good idea but wind will rip trough easily. It would need some sort of flap.

    • @libertylif1263
      @libertylif1263 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have learned that other animals will rarely enter into a space that another animal is occupying. I no longer install an "escape door' and haven't had any problems. I don't like the escape door because it causes too much heat loss.

    • @NKYDIY
      @NKYDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right about that, it creates a wind tunnel in the space. Maybe some sort of double bin structure side by side or on top of one another. Maybe I'll create something new for the coming winter.

      Yes to straw, no to hay.

    • @animalactiongreaterreading4699
      @animalactiongreaterreading4699 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Def use straw. Hay holds moisture and cold. Straw is hollow so it drys quickly and stays warm.
      Also doesn't get old as quick.

      @@NKYDIY :) I have 3 cats. I built a cat house and i used straphor like u did. And the started to play with it, until they kill it. I just tried to warn people that may be a bad idea. All cats arent same. Your or street cat(s) are good ones then. Mines are players. So, always there is risk with that material what u used. I didnt want to hurt your feelings. Even i think u did a good job with sharing this video. Because i was researching how can i build a better one, and videos brought me here. Thank you for the video. I was objective about what u used, nothing else. Sorry if i hurted u. U, me and all people who watch this video are trying to help animals. Have a good day :)
