    Only a very few conductors of the past reached the message of this masterpiece BWV 244. Unbelievable that a human being was able to compose such timeless and genius music. The St. Matthew Passion is the crown of composition and will never reached by other works.
    There's sadness, grief, hurt, pain, agony, love, peace, freedom, positivity and this music comes from another universe. Space and time is endless.

    His tempo choices are PERFECT. For some reason it seems to allow the choir, soloists, orchestra, and the listener to obtain the most natural state of being. And I believe he instinctively heard this. And as a whole it just comes together so innately, so powerfully, so masterfully, so simply. That is the beauty of von Karajan.

    Factos:
    1- Bach e Beethoven foram os dois adjuntos de Deus, enviados ao planeta Terra, para glorificar a espécie Humana através das máximas obras primas alguma vez compostas: A Paixão Segundo São Mateus e a Sinfonia Nº9;
    2 - Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig e Karajan foram os expoentes máximos na interpretação musical em todo o século XX;
    3 - Esta interpretação de Karajan é imbatível e ficará na História, apesar de Klemperer;
    4 - Quando escuto o coros inicial e final e a área "Erbarme dich mein gott" sinto-me confortado por pertencer a esta espécie, capaz de todos os males mas também do sublime. A minha alma é lavada e, enquanto escuto esta música, a minha mente viaja entre as maravilhas postas ao nosso dispor pelo telescópio Hubble ( o mais belo que existe está no fundo do mar, no espaço e na arte, em particular na música ).
    Conclusões:
    a - Quando eu morrer saberei que valeu a pena eu ter vivido. Porque terei escutado Bach e Beethoven centenas de vezes. Claro que não esqueço Vivaldi, Handel, Strauss, Verdi, etc,etc.
    b - A "Ode to Joy" de Beethoven, a área "Erbarme dich mein Gott" ( 1:49:15 ) de Bach e as " Vier Letzte Lieder" de Richard Strauss" são os meus medicamentos de emergência. São, por vezes, a minha tábua de salvação. Já me elevaram em momentos de perdas irreparáveis. Isolei-me do mundo e coloquei auscultadores. E chorei. E ergui-me.
    c - Obrigado!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Although I think Richter's the best, I am in love with the extravagantly lavish legato and sound of Karajan who brings an extra touch of pathos to this already majestic masterpiece. The music above the music. The final takes your breath away. I am not at all in favour of the much faster tempo that seems to be fashion today.

      85, I am sorry for my inadequate English. Your private taste alone is not good enough to decide «correct» tempi, you also need knowlegde. A few words about the opening choir. The funny thing is that our doctors can tell us if the pace are too slow in the opening choir. The time signature is 12/8. old written sources say that they count four beat in each measure. But what kind of beat? Heart beat! Normally number of heart beat is 60-80 per minute. Some articles say 50-80. But the number of heart beat per minute in this performance is 40… Ask the doctors if an human function normally with only 40 heart beat per minutes, and they will say «hardly». Richter have 35 heart beat and Klemperer only 32. Therefore we understand that Richter and Klemperer are too slow in the opening choir. The recent performances who pay attention to old written sources, are faster, around 60 and a few even faster. So, when it comes to tempo in the opening choir, 60 + -confirms by old written sources.

    I don't take sides between HIP's or old tradition. I learned this work from this recording. Then I had a dislike to HIP recordings. Later I got used to them. Then I started preferring them. Recently, I am sort of in love with Butt's recording for Linn. But I don't know why, at moments like 2:56:20 I find myself here, at this recording, the actual one I am listening being paused.
    Karajan is now, maybe, outdated, but he certainly had his own merits and whenever there was a moment for drama, he achieved the maximum from the texture. I don't think I'll ever hear this chorale sung like this anywhere else.
    Another similar appreciation I've for this recording is, among many others, because of the, for me, unbelievable phrasing of the recitative and aria "Geduld". The way it is played makes the words of the aria almost real, tangible.
    Thanks for the upload.

    É importante entender parte da contextualização histórica dessa obra colossal alemã quando a escutamos atentamente .Bach foi engenhoso ao buscar a empatia dos luteranos na época. Ele inseriu na peça um coral Luterano de 1529, que na primeira versão foi tocado nos órgãos e posteriormente foi remanejado para um coro infantil. lembrando que os corais luteranos eram o pão de cada dia musical dos fiéis, em todos os cultos de toda Alemanha se cantavam esses corais. Há, portanto, uma busca da empatia da plateia na estratégia do compositor. Na Alemanha, a reforma luterana promoveu uma limpeza estética nas igrejas. Em uma espécie de surto iconoclasta, semelhante ao que talvez estejamos vivendo hoje,ademais,foram banidas imagens e pinturas de todos os templos, e por pouco a música escapou de ser excluída dos cultos. Mas, para sorte dos músicos, Lutero era um entusiasta das artes sonoras e concluiu que não era pecado louvar o Senhor através do canto e da música instrumental. Lutero não apenas manteve a música presente nas celebrações, como também organizou uma sequência de corais para todas as ocasiões litúrgicas, esses corais ficaram conhecidos como corais luteranos. Bach conhecia profundamente essas composições, tendo escrito várias harmonizações da maioria delas e esse conhecimento foi de extrema importância na Paixão, as melodias corais vão comentando as passagens do evangelho onde representam a comunidade, já os solistas representam os sentimentos individuais.Antes da Paixão segundo São Mateus, Bach escreveu quatro outras Paixões, mas duas foram perdidas, enquanto da Paixão segundo São Marcos só sobreviveu o texto. A Paixão segundo São João, de 1724, se manteve intacta. Tem proporções mais modestas que a de São Mateus, mas também é uma obra-prima.Existe um comentário modesto do criador da obra que me chama atenção a certo tempo ''dizem que sou um compositor,mas somente escrevo as notas que Deus me cede''.Johann Sebastian Bach.

    Se me permite o autor destas palavras, não encontro melhor forma de exprimir o que sinto ao ouvir a Paixão Segundo São Mateus, sob a direção de Karajan. Cito então, parcialmente:
    "Bach e Beethoven foram os dois adjuntos de Deus, enviados ao planeta Terra, para glorificar a espécie Humana através das máximas obras primas alguma vez compostas: A Paixão Segundo São Mateus e a Sinfonia Nº9;
    Esta interpretação de Karajan é imbatível, embora também tenhamos a de Karl Richter e Herrewege, se me permite acrescentar e ficará na História.
    Quando escuto o coros inicial e final e a área "Erbarme dich mein gott" (também refiro Julia Hamari, na versão de Richter, se me permite e a soprano Helen Donath, que nos dão duas incontornáveis interpretações, para mim as melhores de sempre) a minha alma transporta-se a uma outra dimensão.
    Quando eu morrer, saberei que valeu a pena ter vivido. Porque terei escutado Bach e Beethoven centenas de vezes. Claro que não esqueço Vivaldi, Handel, Strauss, Verdi, etc,etc.
    A Música é, por vezes, a minha tábua de salvação e é a prova de que Deus existe."
    Obrigada pelas suas palavras.

      Beethoven also wrote religious music. So what are you even talking about.
      The only thing missing in this performance is a more symphonic approach. Some crescendos, decrescendos, climaxes but you can't expect that from karajan cause he was not a great Bach conductor.
      Structurally speaking Bach's religious music is a lot more similar to Beethoven or Mendelssohn than you think. Unfortunately the authentic movement ruined late baroque. Almost the entire romantic era is inspired by late baroque.
