We had a campaign where our mercs ended up secretly working for Duke Richol during the early stages of the clan invasion (long story) our commander used to rock a Warhammer, but when we finally got some decent salvage our highly paid and resourceful techs whipped up a monstrosity. Dubbed the "Caliburn" It was based on a captured Ebon Jaguar. Its main weapons were a pair of Clan ERPPCs backed up by twin Clan SRM-6s Then we set about ruining it LOL For backup, a pair of inner sphere medium lasers were hard-mounted into the arms under PPCs, destroying invaluable pod space, but hey work with what you got. A C3 slave and a Guardian ECM were also jury rigged in, removing a bit more pod space and causing a few glitches that we're still tracking down. The remaining tonnage was devoted to every clan double heat sink we could salvage (total of 20) and a about a ton and a half of extra tons of clan FF plating that were bolted and welded onto the limbs, really messing up the sleek lines. We ruined a perfectly good omnimech by destroying about six tons of pod space, but it made for a hell of a machine, particularly for a Warhammer driver. And boy did it piss off every clanner who saw it.
On open ground with a properly configured Storm Crow, I was unstoppable. When I first started I never cared about movement value, it was all about guns, but MechWarrior 2 changed my mind about speed and balance. I was only ever able to defeat all 25 mechs during the trial using a Storm Crow. I played most of the game only using that Mech with a few exception where I wasn't allowed to run much. As for the table top game, I cheated and used a little math to figure out the optimal weapons for each weight class.

@@pa_gaming_dad2810 They were brought back on a whim from Clan Wolf, when a bunch of Fidelis (who I'd hardly say are deserving of being called Smoke Jaguar) sided with them.
@BigRed40TECH I'd argue that Sea Fox is FAR more egregious than the Reborn Jags. After all, SF holds less than a dozen worlds, each scattered around the Sphere and isolated from the others, and without a warrior caste (supposedly).... yet no one has eliminated Sea Fox .... Makes Wolf Plot Armor look weak. XD 😂
Mechwarrior 5: Clans doesn't have the Ebon Jaguar available in the press preview. I hope it gets unlocked when we arrive at Luthien and the characters make a big fuss about it.
The modernised Cauldron Born is one of the finest looking Mechs around. Sure, the Prime configuration is not going to induce the kind of bowel loosening terror of a Timber Wolf, but to me that doesn't matter. It is a beautiful machine, and if one must forsake beauty to achieve victory, perhaps you never deserved that victory in the first place.
I was initially confused, because I read about the cauldron in Irish mythology. Then read into it more and found out the cauldron was given by Bran the blessed to Matholwch, an Irish king. I do enjoy when Celtic mythology does cross overs 😂
If I will ever be piloting an Ebon Jaguar in MechWarrior 5: Clans, this is the only heavy mech for me. The speed, armament and armor can make of break a 'mech. I think it always had some of the best balance of all of those. Of course, being an Omnimech helps out a lot. If I have fun using Catapults from the Inner Sphere side, at the same tonnage, the Ebon Jaguar just seems to have it all. It is one of the few 'mechs where I like the old and the new visual designs, however the new representation is my favorite out of any Clan battlemech so far. (So long as both missile racks are still there! Though to me, it still looks great without them, unlike some 'mechs. Looking at you Timber Wolf with no missile racks! It's like removing most of the iconic look of the 'mech.) My go-to configuration at close-range has been 2x LB-X 20 Autocannons for Solaris matches, provided I can survive the engagements and bring another 'mech into range. It can be an absolute beast with enough armor.
Fantastic work! You've really found the sweet spot of battlemech history, tactics, and statistical analysis. It also appeals equally to mechwarrior players vs table top players.
Thank you for making this. I am not well-versed in Smoke Jaguar lore and know even less about the Ebon Jaguar. These are the kinds of lore videos I enjoy the most, learning new things about factions and 'Mechs I am unfamiliar with.

The Couldron Born is the mech that got me into Battletech. When I was about ten or twelve I found a copy of the book Freebirth at a local garage sale. The artwork of the Couldron Born made me buy that book for about a dollar and I loved it to death. Found out it was part of a larger universe and it took off from there.

I wonder how Smoke Jaguar would've felt if they knew how their proposed totem mech would be renamed & remembered as such. Its various models have a mixed bag of utility, but the Cauldron-Born is definitely intended to kick ass in all of them!

Any clan mech warrior assigned to a C config Ebon Jaguar post Operation Revival, sibko or freebirth, that didn't immediately order their mech techs to replace the Uac2's with a pair of ErLL needs immediate reassignment to the nearest Hunchback IIC, Stat!
Awesome vid. Love the mech. When I was a teen I found a Smoke Jag patch and had my mom buy a black hat and replaced what was on there with the Smoke Jaguar patch. I wore it every day for years until the black looked like copper from so much sun. I thought I was pretty cool haha.
One of my favorite Clan Omnis. Nice to see a Clan look at the Hellbringer and go WTF, and work to make a new superior mech. Love the A config, ER Large Lasers for excellent range and a UAC/20 for once range is closed.
Outside of the lore, I see the Cauldron-Born as the culmination of Clan Invasion Assault OmniMechs-it looks like a more refined, sleeker, and more efficient Mad Cat/Timber Wolf, though it doesn't quite fulfill the same role as it isn't quite as armored or naturally well-sinked and its Prime variant kinda sucks. At least with the modern CGL design, I think it's one of the best-looking 'Mechs out there, and it's no slouch on the tabletop either. The PGI model also looks great!
That mech was my ride through the second half of MW3. Allright, mostly it was pulse-lasers and the fact that enemys tend to fall down after you shoot their legs enough, but I happen to pilot that mech most of the time.
What I've seen from the Clans marketing videos looks good but it's just that, marketing and given the state of not only the last game but the gaming industry in general I'll be waiting for Steam reviews before I go near it.
Misread that as saying this was a marketing video, but I'll keep it up anyway* lol None of this was paid for by PGI or CGL, nor do I have a relationship with PGI in order to receive anything like advanced copies or anything. I'm just excited for the game. Even then I have my own criticisms, which I've mentioned on stream and in a prior video. But even then I'm still excited.
The Ebon Jaguar - like the Mad Dog, was the embodiment of Clan Smoke Jaguar's ruthless Crusader doctrine for the Clan Invasion - a home-built new & improved evolution of the ubiquitous Hellbringer that's supposedly more efficient, more powerful & less wasteful in the zellbringin warfare. But in their hubris, wasted most of their finest warriors in Wolcott & Luthien that sealed their defeat on Tukayyid & then their eventual demise in Operation Bulldog + Operation Serpent & the Great Refusal - when the "dezgra turncoat" & had their Ebon Jags turned on their creators. It was like metaphorically sending Ebon Jags into the cauldron of the Clan Invasion debacle, later to be remade by the cauldron of Clan Sea Fox in several decades later. Hence, the "Cauldron-Born" has a literal meaning for the Ebon Jaguar. Clan Sea Fox's Cauldron-Born Ebon Jaguars are then marketed to , (later Clan Spirit Cats of Clan Protectorate) & to restock their numbers, as well as being the Cauldron-Borns' new customer in the Dark Age when the Cappies seek to acquire as many Clan weapons as they can to tip the scale against the Republic of the Sphere to their favor. Not to mention, both the Scorpion Empire & the Raven Alliance inherited the Ebon Jaguar productions from what remained of the Clan Homeworlds from the Wars of Reaving. The latter - Raven Alliance, also seeks to undermine the Sea Fox's marketing with their own Ebon Jags to the Capellans & the Dracs while selling their Blood Asps to their Spheroid customers
Bar none one of my favorite clan heavies. Will often use the A, B and H models. It honestly is one of the best UAC-20 carriers the clans have and is probably responsible for the most head decapitations I've ever done. The A variant I posted on twitter I have is literally named head hunter.
Personally for the C model, I'd switch out the AC 2's for PPC's or even ER-PPC's, make it a ranged brawler with plenty of options to punch through armor AND crit-seek.
It's nice that the Large Laser can reliably fire with the AC10's too, meaning there is a not-unreasonable chance of scoring up to 50-damage on a target if the dice are hot. That's spicy.
MW 5 is going to be great. We played as three of the OG invading clans, we played out the death of SJ, and now we get to play as SJ during the invasion. In other words. MW2 + MW3 = MW5
When I first play Mechwarrior 3 (first mech series game for me), I tore through the campaigns with no issue, until I encountered a pair of these at that train mission. That was my first death in the entire game. Ok, that's a lie, but it's a death I remembered the most because it's like so late into the game, and rather than a 100 tonner taking me down, a rando little walking airplane did me in. From then on, Ebon Jaguar fan for life.
I do love how the Ebon Jag looks, frankly I need to print a custom one for a TT Campaign I have running, give my players a rival in the clans. They're Clan Ghost Bear, while this Rival will be CSJ and have a custom loadout, the perk of an omni. While not as lethal I do agree the Prime configuration is a bit lacking as such the rival's mech will have a ton extra armor, but mostly 3ERML in the Right Arm, 1 ERML in each ST, with 1LRM10 in each ST, 3 tons of LRM10 ammo, and keeping that gauss, using the leftover tonnage on DHS. 50 Damage alpha isn't crazy but it is still mean.
I have to admit, I can get what you mean with Ghost Bear's Legacy. It really added more to what it meant to live as a clanner whereas Mechwarrior 2 was more going into random battles that were referenced in books about the Refusal War. GBL was really a great game for it's story, and it'll be nice to see what the Clan viewpoint will look like with 30 years or so between those games. So much as far as storytelling and tech has changed, it should be a good experience. I do wonder if they will expansion in the other clans or maybe give us more clans to run campaigns with.
@@BigRed40TECH Oh yea, I feel like that one sticks out a lot for me. I always found that whole bit about insubordination from the new commander when you take him out odd considering the old one wanted to effectively did the same thing. Not sure if that one was a storytelling goof or if that is the intended way Clanners were meant to behave. I wouldn't hold it against them considering the really tiny timeframe they had to make the whole thing.
I think it'd be cool if MW5 Clans included a batchall mechanic, allowing you higher rewards for winning engagement with fewer units or lighter equipment.
people misunderstand the c variant. it is not really an anti-mech platform. it is an anti-armour platform, both with regards to traditional armour, and with regards to elementals -- lrms and srms work against both, and scatter damage is extra beneficial against agile targets like elementals, while the ac2's, functionally useless against anything but the lightest of light mechs, are perfectly capable of cracking an elementals battle armour, and can take down all but the heaviest conventional armour with relative ease. it would only be expected to engage other mechs if matters deteriorated to a melee, when, having an anti-mech role forced on it, it would serve as a harasser when bracketing, and as an opportunist, in close, taking advantage of clan lrm's lack of a minimum range to hit already damaged mechs with a 42 missile burst salvo to finish them off.
Not until there is some more meaningful Ghost Bear related content coming out. ATM, I'd just be rehashing the Executioner, and I'm not interested in doing that.
I've found myself rewatching this video whole or in part while plying Mechwarrior 5: Clans as of late. Fantastic work, this. Makes Me wonder if they will do all the other clans as expansion packs for mechwarrior 5 clans and then for Mac Warrior 6 move on to either the blankest jahad or the current ill con era setting either which would be fantastic to see this developer do! Maaaaaaaybbbbeeeee even add the clans or at least their mechs, to both mainline MW5 umbrella. Add a bunch Of new Clan mechs or Inter sphere variants using clan technology to the game with each new Clan expansion!
Just when you finally lock in your pronunciation of "jaguar" you give us "Eebon" whatever, Great video, makes me wish i could get my hands on this in a game
Clan Smoke Jaguar is the best Clan. They are the most perfect embodiment of the Clan way, and, notably, the Clan way of life as intended by Nicholas Kerensky ended with the fall of Jaguars. For how impactful they are, there is frustratingly little actual information on them. They never received a sourcebook, and got little focus in novels and games, being little more than just the "Clan Enemy."
I think you misspoke there at 7:40 Red. Clan Smoke Jags' final gift to mankind were Protomechs. A final joke from them, except it was on all of the rest of the Sphere and Clans, because why else would you leave that as your final parting gift for everyone to use when all your previous works are superior? Great vid by the way. The Ebon Jaguar/Cauldron-Born has always been my favorite mech!
I frequently mistake the Ebon Jaguar for another mech, the Linebacker. Theyre both low to the ground. The Linebacker is extremely fast for a Heavy Mech, while the Ebon Jaguar is fast, but only average for a Clan heavy mech. I was actually pleasantly surprised when the Ebon-Jaguar was in Mechwarrior 3. The Ebon-Jaguar is overall a Poor Man's Timber Wolf. Most clan heavy mechs can be accused as such but their Prime configurations at least give them a purpose. The Mad Dog is fire support. The Hellbringer is a Sniper and Electronic Warfare specialist. The Summoner is a Jumper and Jack-of-all-Trades. One of the majorly confusing things is that its referred to as a Zombie...but its not a Zombiemech. It has an Extralight Engine that greatly decreased its overall durability. Its uses a lot of ammunition based weaponry, and ammo can explode. Its omni configurations are maybe where it is distinctive. Some of them are crazy-powerful but totally unbalanced. If its got a purpose then blitzing the enemy and hoping to not explode would be it.
I use this in the online game . I am a energy weapons guy. i am a chain fire or bracket fire. I go for cockpits shot . I believe in destroy the meat save the metal .
Great vid as always even if I did wince at the "E-Bon Jag-Wire!" And the Ebon Jag's always been a good 'mech, even if i'm still sure they switched up the fluff and names for the Kingfisher and the Ebon Jaguar/cauldron born which goes on about how tough it is when its not that tough, whereas the Kingfisher is tough as old boots. the only thing about the Jag is that its prime config is true kitchen sink syndrome, its got a gun for every occasion rather than being less focused. Like it don't need the SRM-2, rip that out, and put in an ER Med and ER Small for example.

It's a Jaaagg!
But seriously, now I need to add one of these to my pile to paint, and just when I was starting to shrink the pile.
Great video. Awsome mech.
Good video Man.
Red said to comment, so... *I obey.*
Ebon Jaguar D is definitely my favorite design. Those dual UAC10's shred while the ER LL and ER mediums are good backups.
It's nice that the Large Laser can reliably fire with the AC10's too, meaning there is a not-unreasonable chance of scoring up to 50-damage on a target if the dice are hot. That's spicy.
Ebon Juagar is a beefed up Nightstar
Your Canadian amuses me. It seems theres a high proportion of maples that are battletech fans. Love the videos. Keep it up
MW 5 is going to be great.
We played as three of the OG invading clans, we played out the death of SJ, and now we get to play as SJ during the invasion.
In other words.
MW2 + MW3 = MW5
great video Red, keep it up bro
Love the Cauldron Born! Well done!
After having watched the video, especially the last bit, all I can say is "Seyla!"
Seyla!
3:33 true story, when I was 5, my parents took me to see ALIEN opening night... I've been scared of spiders ever since
Clan Omni-mech design philosophy: We can put any weapon on this mech, so we will put one of everything.
The squat and thicc omnimech
Where's Mechfrog!? You found his boi.
Oh snap my second favorite clan mech! This is gonna be great!
I find the fact that the Smoke Jaguars mechs where the first mechs I encountered funny when this was in MechWarrior 4 and they were dead then
Someone had to pilfer those mech-stocks.
Well done Red
Lets go!!
Cauldron born is dam good mech. Even prime is decent for simple fact its rare for clan mech to have enough ammo to fight.
Very sad it doesn't make an appearance in MW5 Clans
Agreed
Then it only show up till after the war I know and MechWarrior 3 you fight them.
I still remember the fight with Bekker. lol
Soon as i saw this in mechwarrior 3. I replayed the mission until i got one. And never used another mech the rest of the campaign.
If you like sticking to canned configs, the B, E, and F are all reasonable and the G, H, and T are fun.
I think it'd be cool if MW5 Clans included a batchall mechanic, allowing you higher rewards for winning engagement with fewer units or lighter equipment.
people misunderstand the c variant. it is not really an anti-mech platform. it is an anti-armour platform, both with regards to traditional armour, and with regards to elementals -- lrms and srms work against both, and scatter damage is extra beneficial against agile targets like elementals, while the ac2's, functionally useless against anything but the lightest of light mechs, are perfectly capable of cracking an elementals battle armour, and can take down all but the heaviest conventional armour with relative ease. it would only be expected to engage other mechs if matters deteriorated to a melee, when, having an anti-mech role forced on it, it would serve as a harasser when bracketing, and as an opportunist, in close, taking advantage of clan lrm's lack of a minimum range to hit already damaged mechs with a 42 missile burst salvo to finish them off.
my favorite clan mech praying for the kodiak video soon now
Not until there is some more meaningful Ghost Bear related content coming out. ATM, I'd just be rehashing the Executioner, and I'm not interested in doing that.
also preying that we can pilot a Stone Rhino its my absolute favorite mech to pilot both on Tabletop and in MWO
Can't wait to stompstomp in this in MW5C!
Clan ... holy shit it's Eradani Lighthorse Smoked 420 blazed Jaguar
(Okay Ebon Jaguar is a favorite of mine along side the Timberwolf)
I am playing MechWarrior 3, on my channel, and using a Ebon Jaguar, with 9 Medium Plus Lasers. It burn through everything.
Good video
Ah yes, clan Smoke Jagguire.
Just when you finally lock in your pronunciation of "jaguar" you give us "Eebon"
whatever, Great video, makes me wish i could get my hands on this in a game
Clan Smoke Jaguar is the best Clan. They are the most perfect embodiment of the Clan way, and, notably, the Clan way of life as intended by Nicholas Kerensky ended with the fall of Jaguars. For how impactful they are, there is frustratingly little actual information on them. They never received a sourcebook, and got little focus in novels and games, being little more than just the "Clan Enemy."
They're my favourite Clan for a reason.
@@BigRed40TECH Mine too, great to have that in common!
Ah, yes. An actually useful Bushwacker type chassis. What's not to like?
I think you misspoke there at 7:40 Red. Clan Smoke Jags' final gift to mankind were Protomechs. A final joke from them, except it was on all of the rest of the Sphere and Clans, because why else would you leave that as your final parting gift for everyone to use when all your previous works are superior?
Great vid by the way. The Ebon Jaguar/Cauldron-Born has always been my favorite mech!
Protomechs aren't a gift, they are a curse. ;)
So I wasn't wrong at all lol
AC-5s are a perfectly fine weapon and are great for procking PSR falldown checks.
