Easter Motet by Andrew Lawrence-King: Surrexit Christus / Victimae Paschali / Nüüd Kristus surmast

In the manner of a medieval Motet, this new composition combines three melodies in polyrhythmic counterpoint, interweaving also their texts to deliver the same message in three musical media.
The three elements - a Lutheran hymn, a Gregorian chant and a traditional Estonian song - show three strands of Baltic culture, musical heritage and religious expression.
This composition and instrumental performance is dedicated on Easter Day 2023 to Mother Vimala and the Brigittine sisters of Pirita Convent, Tallinn. The video also features images of the ancient ruins of the medieval convent, itself a cherished symbol of Estonian identity and cultural heritage.
Ensemble Tuli Taevast have performed a version of this piece for small vocal/instrumental ensemble, and a choral version is in preparation.
