Fishing with Live Bait for Snook Along Mangrove Islands

- In this video, I start the morning fishing for snook using artificial lures north of Tampa Bay, Florida. After seeing a ton of fish while only one bite all morning, I decided to catch some live bait. I was able to cast net about 2 dozen big threadfins or greenbacks (threadfin herring) and returned to the spot I was previously at. It didn't take long for the snook to start eating the baits. I show you my free-line live bait rig for snook and how I hook my threadfins. I end up catching my biggest snook of the year thus far!

Just a video idea, but maybe casting a cast net like techniques of throwing and identifying places to cast the net to find bait
I've heard chumming 5 minutes before throwing the net really helps. I bought bait chum powder but haven't tried it yet.
Scott Michael I’ve seen a youtuber mix sand powder and sea water to fire them up but I never got to try it
We use Tropicana fish food, menhaden oil, and a little sea water to make a dough-like consistency for chum. You chum the flats with the water moving. Youll see the bait come in. It might take like 20 minutes, though. Greenbacks are great bait, but so are pinfish and ladyfish. Big snook and big reds LOVE cut ladyfish.

Nice snook! I was able to catch a 37" in Sanibel back in mid Feb this year and plenty in the mid 20's but they are always fun to catch on light/med tackle. Stay safe and keep getting out there as long as u can!😎👍👍

for a daytime west coast snook on the flats and light tackle, 31 is a solid snook. believe me ive caught my share of 40" 20lb snook, (on heavy gear at night on structure) but they are comparable to fighting a slot on a 3k mid day

Love your videos man, awesome to watch you keep catching more and more fish. Are the marinas open down there? I had a trip planned for early may. Family has a place down in sarasota area and a boat, but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to take it out with everything going on. Good to see you out there! Gives me hope!
As of right now, marinas and boat ramps are still open around the North part of Tampa Bay. I'm pretty sure they are still open around Sarasota, but I'm not 100% positive

I’d love to know the difference between greenbacks threadfins herrings pilchards. I can’t tell the difference.
It's a confusing topic. There's really two main baitfish you'll find inshore around Tampa: scaled sardines and threadfin herring (and sometimes menhaden/bunker/pogie). "Pilchard" is just another name for a sardine, which is why scaled sardines are called also pilchards. "Threadfins" or "Threadies" refer to the long thread-like dorsal fin of threadfin herring. "Greenbacks" is a regional term referring to either one of the two species. Here is Tampa, I believe most people refer to scaled sardines as "Greenbacks". And finally "White Bait" is a generic term for either one of the two species

Nice catches today, Brent! Do you have more than 1 Mojo Inshore rod? Seems like you use a MF other times. Why the St. Croix's? Ever tried the Bull Bay rods? I use a BB 7'6" MF Stealth Sniper and love it.
I have two Mojo's. One is a 7' 6" Medium Light on my 3000 setup and the other is a 7' 6" Medium on my 4000 setup. I also have an Avid Inshore. I've used St. Croix rods for many years now. I'm the kind of person who finds something they like and won't change it unless it's needed. Their customer service is amazing and the rods are high quality so I've had no reason to really buy a different rod. I do have some Shimano Terez rods as well and love those, but I've never tried a Bull Bay
@@SeeYaDude Bet if you tried the one I have - the Bull Bay Stealth Sniper 7'6" 6-12# MF, you might not go back to St Croix! Little pricier than the St Croix, but worth it in my opinion. They have them at Tidewater Outfitters. Next time you're in there (when they open!), take a look.

I read that snook is a very good fish for eating but all I ever see on TH-cam is catch and release. Why is that?
Between Pasco and Collier counties, snook season is closed until August 31, 2021. This will allow their population to bounce back after the red tide we had in 2018. The rest of the state can keep snook, but there are times of the year when their season is closed. Also, the slot size range of snook is small (Atlantic: 28"-32", Gulf: 28"-33"), making it difficult to catch a slot fish. Some people are strictly catch and release, especially when it comes to snook. They value a snook's sport fish qualities more than it's table fare. I personally would rather keep sheepshead, black drum, or speckled trout over a snook for that reason
Thank you for replying. Closed for a year - wow! Sheepshead is my wife's favorite table fare. I like crab stuffed flounder. I really miss fishing. Used to live the Texas Gold Coast. As soon as I can travel again I will leave Thailand and eventually head to the Pacific Coast of Panama. I have two Sharkey 3 reels waiting in Michigan for me. I am guessing most of my fishing will be shore, pier or jetty in Panama. Any recommendations on rods?
