Classic Game Room reviews SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 for Sega Genesis from 1994! Sonic and Tails reunite, but this time they're faced with Knuckles the Echidna. Is he with them or against them? Find out as Sonic nears the finale to stop Dr. Robotnik from relaunching his most maniacal creation yet, the Death Egg.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still, to this day, my favourite Sonic game by far

Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckle together makes such a massive game when combined.

The thing that makes classic Sonic games so cool, is that you really have to earn your speed. Sonic has the potential to move lightning fast, but the game never just hands you that speed. If you want to go fast, you need to learn the level design and develop a good grasp of the momentum-based physics of the game. The more you play, the faster you will go.
Ice Cap zone music is amazing.

Hey Mark, in the bonus levels with the orbs, you can go along the outer perimeter (like the edges of a box) and turn them all into rings. Just a small tip.

The fact that Mark got the level select code working definitely redeems himself of his platforming skills. I consider myself a Sonic pro but I've never got that code to work

Great game. Sonic 2 is my favorite though.
I remember when I was in middle school, my mom told me if I could beat this game she'll buy me a ticket to the theaters. I failed.
Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were always my favorites. Best thing about the older Sonic games is the music, hands down.
I love Sonic 3. I prefer this game over Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 because in Sonic 3, you can save data through auto-save. In Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, you can't save data. I also like Sonic 3 & Knuckles because it is the extended version of Sonic 3. I love both the stand-alone and extended versions of this game. Both Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles were so epic years back on the Genesis. Today's Sonic games really suck.
Not true well except for sonic 06 that was bad but most of the sonic current sonic games are supposed to be for fun
I love Sonic 3 and I Prefer this Game over Sonic 1 and 2 as well the Last Sonic Games I played were Sonic Unleashed for PS2 back in 2008-2009 and Sonic Unleashed for Xbox 360 back in 2011-2012 after that the ones I still own and still play to this Day are Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Sonic Heroes, Shadow The Hedgehog, and Sonic Riders

You didn't mention anything about the Knuckles add on cartridge.
The first game I ever played was Sonic the Hedgehog 2, whilst it's not the game in the review, the video still brings back memories :D
Pro tip for the bonus stages in Sonic 3. When you encounter a group of blue spheres collect them in the outline of the grouping. Basically only collect the outer most spheres in the group kinda like drawing an outline. It will appear as though you will complete the square and run into the first red sphere but just as you collect the last blue sphere in the outline the entire square will turn into rings. This is how you will get extra live and continues in the bonus stages. manage to collect all rings in a bonus stage and you will get a perfect resulting in an extra continue. Keep in mind this truck does not work in groupings of 4 blue spheres. Now go forth Mark and unlock Super Sonic.
Mark, always get the blue balls only in outline, it removes all and replaces them with collectable rings :)
It is from my own life experiences that I have learned you should always avoid getting the blue balls.
1 & 2 are my favorites I could never get into 3. I have to give it another go.
The music in this game is tremendous.
A classic. I still try to get through the old games at least once a year.
Mark is so amazing with his reviews that even people who doesn't like Sonic platf games (it'sa meee!) ends The videos with some courage to play some. Thanks for being that awesome, Mark. :)

On what Mark said at the end though, why Nintendo & Sega haven't got together to do a Mario/Sonic platformer by now is beyond me.

A huge game made even bigger when you slap it on top of Sonic & Knuckles.
This is my favorite Sonic game, though I never got to appreciate it until the internet age because I used to always get stuck at the barrel of doom.
Yep, the 16-bit Sonic games always had pretty good music, but 3's Ice Cap Zone and Azure Lake Zone made a pretty deep impression on me. Honorable mentions go out to Marble Lake and Launch Base. I'd heard Michael Jackson was brought on to work on the music or something, but that he was frustrated with the Genesis' audio capabilities and abandoned the project at some point. Oh well, we still got some great stuff here, whether it was stuff that he worked on or whatever the composers worked with using some of his music.
One of the best games on the Genesis, one of the best soundtracks on the Genesis, and still one of the best games ever made, especially in combination with the add-on. A classic.

MrNintendo505 And that's the problem with Nintendon't because they are anti-consumerism and pro-restrictions. That's why MK1 sold better on the Genesis than it did on Super Nintendon't, because the Genesis version is uncensored. Hell Robocop versus Terminator on the Genesis had blood. The Super Nintendon't version doesn't. The Game Genie is officially licensed by Sega. Nintendon't was suing Galoob for making the Game Genie. Sega was successful with the Genesis because of their pro-consumerism and anti-restrictions. That's why Genesis does what Nintendon't.
And that is why Sega is the gaming hardware giant it is today.
MrNintendo505 The point is you shouldn't have to input a code for blood. That's why I like the Genesis better, because Sega never impose any rule on the developers. In fact that's why the ERSB rating was created, so they can release these kind of games.
Michael Burgwin Software actually. Sega did make mistakes with the 32X and the Sega CD. But that's also what I liked about them, they took risks. Had the Playstation not entered the console wars, it would still be Sega vs Nintendo til this day.

Sonic 1 and then 2 did it for me. Sonic 3 felt different and didn't carry the wow factor I had felt with 1 and then 2.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles i think is the best sonic game/games ever. Its the only Sonic game that can hold its own against Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World.
Sonic 2-Sonic & Knuckles were my all time favorite games, but I didn't like the special stages, it was really relaxing playing Sonic but the special stages ruined it much!
Actually, when you combine Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with Sonic and Knuckles cartridge through a lock on technology, it turns into the best Sonic game of all time: Sonic 3 and Knuckles(Well in my opinion, it's the best Sonic game ever).
Sonic Generations is a really good take on the series and it has a lot of 2D gameplay in it.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still the best Sonic game ever made IMO.

Sonic 3 was the first of the main games that I beat.
Difficulty, from easiest to hardest:
1. Sonic 3
2. Sonic and Knuckles
3. Sonic 1
4. Sonic 2 (The end boss took a while to figure out lol)

For a long time sonic 2 was my favorite, then i said sonic/knuckles was. I want to say sonic 3 is my favorite because of the level designs and music, but it was also kinda short compare to the other games. It's between this and sonic 2
THANK YOU! Sonic 1 is the best. What makes up a game's atmosphere is not the game mechanics, but the looks and feel of the zones. And Sonic 1 has the best set and most nostalgic zones.
A lot of people think Sonic 2 is the best, they're soooooo wrong. It's one of the best, but not thee best.
1.) The final boss is so fucking hard, and can never hit it when it's walking, I always have to wait for it to come down and lower itself long enough.
2.) Special Stages suck ass . . . for a number of reasons, but one reason shouts out louder than all the other reason combined . . . TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAILS!!!!
I personally felt the Knuckles attachment was meh compared to the previous 3 Sonic games. Honestly it's not a Classic Sonic game I get excited about, it's okay but I expected better, and the cartridge is very finicky. That being said Sonic 3 w/o Knuckles has to be my second favorite Sonic game. It's smooth and solid plus I love the soundtrack. I still can't believe Michael Jackson had a hand in it.

My favorite is how Sonic can run faster than the speed of sound but he can't walk up a slight fucking incline.

I always hated that every time they release sonic 3 they release sonic and knuckles separate from it. The two games were meant to be one in the same. Thankfully the DS collection got it right. Sonic 3 & Knuckles will always be my favorite sonic game.

THEY SHOULD HAVE made more Sonic games where you can actually fucking use your SPEED, like against others, similar to Sonic Adventure. That's what Sonic should mostly be about, not "puzzles" and spikes everywhere.

So all the shields had abilities when you double jumped. But if i remember correctly is you double jumped with no shield this weird animation would flash over sonic. Anyone know if that did anything?
It was a 'kick' that extended the range of his attack, useful against some bosses.
It was also called 'insta-shield' in the manual.

supposedly Michael Jackson composed the music for the game. Sega decided to remove his credits shortly after his scandal broke. If you know his older music, (80's) I think you can tell he did the soundtrack. I love it.
He should review Sonic 06, perhaps as the CGR ultimate series finale.

This game needs a widescreen remake. Sonic would be great with more horizontal pixels. Maybe then, I would stop running into spikes.

Sonic & Knuckles was way more enjoyable in my opinion but 3 is still cool.

Are you actually kidding me? Knuckles was better then three? What. The. Hell. They were supposed to be the same game, but due to technology at the time it was put onto to separte games. Knuckles can join up with three, and even go into two!!
Dillondoes games I. Know. That. And still, I liked the levels and OST of that game better.
It just gave me more of that Sonic feeling, starting with a zone in green and going over to mechanical stuff and whatnot.

Sonic 3 out of the sonics on the sega is the easiest to beat, then sonic 2, then sonic 1. I havent beaten sonic 1 before, and that one of all, i wish had a level save feature. 3 acts on every level. All three are pure awesomeness.
So you're a Tails fan (Like me), and you don't bring up the S3&K part? You should. Because, you know, it's the only game in the series where you get Super Tails.

Sonic went super Sonic in Sonic 2 when u had all emeralds or put on the sega code up down left right A+Start simultaneously at start screen and collect 50 rings then jump. The super Sonic thing did not waited for sonic 3. It was there already in Sonic 2.
Mario and Sonic appeared in games together... However they never appeared in a game together that was true to their origins... Why can't we get a true Sonic and Mario crossover in a platform game!!! Bowser teams up with Robotnik to take over the world and Mario and Sonic team up in a all action packed first person shooter!!!! Wait.... no no thats not it.
As cool as a Mario and Sonic platformer be an interesting idea, the game play mechanics and styles wouldn't meld well at all, especially if not done in the utmost right hands. With Sonic's core mechanics being speed and Mario's more timed jump platformering doesn't seem it would really work. Maybe it could. I don't know.
I love this game I've beet it before but I did not get all of the chaos emeralds or I think I did I'm not sure but I'll have to replay it and hopefuly I can replay it this game is cool keep up with the soinc review's
