That Italy after 2006 victory was a strange hybrid and started the tournament very badly.
After winning against France, the players were really united and were really close to send Spain home.

and think that there are people who always talk about catenaccio when speaks of Italy ... only in the first half they had to be ahead of 3 goals... then as often happened to the Azzurri after having to play against Holland, Romania and France in the group they had to meet immediately the excellent Spain who became Champion winning only on penalties against Italy (without Gattuso and Pirlo)

The Netherlands, unlike Italy, are always at the top in the group matches and the more they go forward the less concrete they are - Italy is the opposite and the palmares of the two teams is the confirmation.
Against, a good Romanian squad, a regular goal by Toni, which would have been 1-0, was unjustly annulled and several opportunities were not taken advantage of exactly as against France, but after all the best team was Spain, which began an impressive cycle against Italy, which they only managed to beat on penalties.

@Escu Dero Unfortunately in National Team Del Piero never convinced totally and disappointed many times, I know that...but Di Natale did not much better and against Spain Donadoni played with Aquilani who has never been at the height of the Italian National Team...generally but especially against Spain the heavyweights Cannavaro, Gattuso and Pirlo (+ Totti that refused) would have been surely lethal!

Pirlo shooting penaltis like nobody on earth, with power and ball well positioned amazing player like only few remember that name forever, Andrea Pirlo.
This was a France team in rebuilding phase. Their last trophy in 2000, it took 18 years to win something big again.
Similar to Italy post 2008. Italy was in transition in Euro 2012, WC 2014 & Euro 2016.
And now it they have won a major trophy again.
Interestingly currently, both Spain & Germany are in a rebuilding phase. But Spain is a bit more polished.
The stronger & established Euro team now is definitely France.
It would be interesting to see in World Cup 2020, with stronger Spain (they had striker issue, same with Italy), established France, question marks for team such as Germany, Netherlands, Portugal and how Italy gonna carry their momentum.

Portugal became champions despite finishing third in a really easy group (the didn't even win a group game) and only won 1 game out of 7 in 90 minutes. That is just awful. The Euro 2008 Spain team were one of the best teams ever in international football.

who would have done better? maybe some but not many, 2006 was truly a generational change that's why losing those penalties hurt so much because everybody knew many key players were retiring and some other important players were losing their level as time passed.
