Brothers, please please do not take any riba based loans. Have a good intention and sincerely ask Allah for help if you don't have the means to pursue masters, Allah will open the doors for you. Wallahi, I did my Masters in US without a loan. When I made the intention to pursue masters, I didn't have money. Therefore I worked in UAE for 15 months and saved enough money to pay for the first semester ($9k). Later I received scholarships for the rest of my masters program to the tune of $20k and I didn't have to pay any money. The only reason this happened is because I sincerely made dua to Allah to help me out after doing my bit, and Subhan Allah, Allah opened the doors for me.

I took a student loan as I had no other option of borrowing. Some of these comments are blaming this guy but at the end of it he's not going to be responsible for your actions. In my first year of employment I've managed to pay half my debt, so I think whoever has taken it try their best to pay off. Because when you get the statements every year you will see interest accumulation like as if it was an actual loan.

theres a difference between being able to afford it and having to take a student loan. When you are in a country where student loans have interest its not your fault that intrest is implemented, so you have no choice other than to take the student loan and pay it back as soon as possible. However if you can physically afford the tuition fees then it is probably haram to take a student loan. If not then its permisble since you have no choice.

Haram or not this guy is advising us for our long-term benefit(s). Student loans suck and drain the lives out of graduates who get out right away from grad school and suffer so much from paying it back. The pain from doing so is real. I've seen people who live in the worst areas just to survive, due to the fact that they couldn't pay back their interest and loans on time because of the poor credit score they receive from not paying back on due time.
This is what frustrates everyone the most is that we muslims don't really give a shit for each other on such detrimental issues like this. We should create and setup more opportunities that involve scholarships for anyone wanting to go to college and especially to medical, law and engineering related schools where tuition rates are the most commonly high.
What happened to the college fund fad that parents aspired for their kids once? That would better than to follow the deceitful norm of borrowing from banks who conduct business on their loanees.

Contemporary jurists have ruled that fiat money, which has no intrinsic value, follows the same rules as commodity money. The rules that apply to the latter also apply to the former. Thus, when a sum of fiat money is loaned, the lender cannot demand any increment above the sum of the loan irrespective of the value at the time of repayment. Therefore, in the case of the current structure of student loans, as the lender demands an increment at the rate of inflation, this amounts to riba which is prohibited. Thus, student loans as they stand are not suitable for Muslims.

I understand that loans are harram but the person in the video clearly doesn't fully understand the student loan system in the uk so I am finding it very difficult to make a decision. plus recently the government decided that they will cancel grants nd swap them for loans, meaning that students like myself will have to live of university bursaries which are approximately 1500 pounds a yr which is not enough for anything. this means that people cant do that trick were you save up ur grants which to help pay for their tution fees. my family dont work so I have no source of incomr watsover while im studying and part time jobs are more competitive than evrr and the money from those will go towards students daily expenses. for someone like me I cant do my course part time and I have to move out so I will have to take out all these loans nd inshallah it shouldn't be harram

***** did you watch the full video. just watch the full video. The mufti sahab already said that people who don't have sufficient for living for themselves then one can accept zakaat which you don't have to pay back. Once you save so much money/property that entitles you to pay zakaat then you pay it. One sincere advice as a muslim brother would be ask a mufti or any scholar you know or think is knowledgable and explain to him your whole situation, they can guide you. If the scholar is physically in reach it's better but if not try to reach them through phone/email etc.

I think we need to start differentiating interest from Prophets time and what it is today. Prophets time was when rich used it abuse poor/slaves by charging them 100/200% interest rates and generation after generations were paying off loans. (Still happens in Pakistan Rural areas). Modern Finance interest is a totally different animal , its market driven. Depending on the market condition, rates could go up and down. Car loan/student loan/ etc can be from .99% to 8% etc. Again not issuing no fatwa, i am no scholar. But in modern day and age there is no way to avoid Interest. I think we need to start taking modern day needs into accounts. Just my opinion.

hakkihan tunbak Ikr man, ahh thanks so much for the support though! I really appreciate it :D
But yeah sometimes we have no other option and people need to realise that, not alienate us for it :/

IceLysis Brother, i hope you don't take this the wrong way but there is always a choice. Study part time if you have to and get a part time job to pay your tuition fees. Allah has been very clear about his position on interest in the Quran.

fawazi abdulghani Did you read what I said? I'm studying dentistry, my course commences on weekdays from 9-5 usually. I need to do 3 hours of revision each day, and 5 hours of revision on weekends.
      1) I don't have the time to get a job.
      2) It's impossible to study dentistry part time
      3) please do some research before replying

fawazi abdulghani what if your degree does not give the option for part time study? Do you really think that a part time job will cover the tuition fees of 9000 a year ALONG with living expenses...wishful thinking. None of us want to take out interest willingly.

The commenter does not understand that the Mufti is is referring to rulings derived from Quran n Hadeeth by their teachers.

According to this logic, you shouldn't be able to drive a car either, because of the insurance. You shouldn't be able to have a contract phone, because it is "oppressive". How are intelligent individuals who come from a poorer family background supposed to go to university in order to get a good job to save their family? I think NOT taking the loan is the oppression here. Use your brains, my brothers.

you are not the one saving your family. You must understand that you are not the one who provides for your family but Allah.

fawazi abdulghani so we should all just sit at home?
You must do your bit before asking Allah to help! You cannot expect to get 100% in examinations without revising for them! You must first revise, do your bit, and then (most importantly) ask for Allah to help you in it.

hakkihan tunbak i did not say that. Once you understand that Allah is the provider of all you realize that all you can do is to try your best, if you cannot attend university in a halal manner then you should not attend it. Allah will find you a path that is halal if you put all your trust within him. As-salamu-alaykum wa-rahmatullahi wa-barakaatu

fawazi abdulghani People like you would say even breathing is Haram.
      There are weak Hadiths:
who judges whether they are weak or not? You must use the brain and heart (genuinely) to come to reasonable conclusions. Why did Allah give you your brain?

Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah . But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein. Quran 2:275
please don't let anger cloud your judgement, if anything i said is wrong i repent and seek forgiveness from Allah. May Allah guide you and i to the right path.
