The first time Leon saw himself in the mirror he backed away all the way to his cave, which implies that he perceived a threat. The second time Leon looked in the mirror, he looked for a minute and then turned around and walked away, which implies that he did not perceive a threat. Whether or not he has any self awareness, it seems that he's a quick learner. Assessing risks is essential to survival in the wild.
Found an interesting study: A species of crab can learn to navigate a maze and still remember it up to two weeks later. The discovery demonstrates that crustaceans, which include crabs, lobsters and shrimp, have the cognitive capacity for complex learning, even though they have much smaller brains than many other animals.
@@Bradybrandwood I looked it up, and they are extremely smart critters but like almost evrey animal including dogs, cats, baccicly all non human primates including gorillas and chimpanzees, and even young humans, the reflection test is extremely hard to accomplish and if they pass its a sign of highly significant intelligence, most animals can't but some who can are humans over about a year, elephants, manta rays, and pigs, very interesting topic, and Leon is most definitely happy, healthy, and intelligent. That's correct, mostly mirror tests are used to see if a animal is intelligent enough that they know its their own reflection. Both chimps and dolphins passed these tests meaning the recognize themselves, so this means that Leon learns that his reflection is safe or of no threat to his home since most likely his first reaction to his image he saw a larger lobster moving into Leon's territory
I think his reaction to the mirror was really interesting. Because of how lobster eyes work, I believe the reflection confused him and did not properly compute with how he was used to seeing the world, and had to adjust before giving it any critical thought.

@@99fruitbat94 I am actually seeing people who did this before Brady did. One person did it a few years ago. I don't know if Brady got the idea from them or if it was an original thought on his part out of his enjoyment of Pets, but I am fine with it. The water is warm, (bad pun) jump in and enjoy, give me more to watch and learn. Brady is very good at production and does other things as well besides Pets. I wish him all the best, I subscribed watched his older videos and look forward to his future videos.
When you just have rescued Leon from the store, he was dull, brown-grey. As he become healthy, I realised, how vibrant and colourful he is! There is bluish hue on claws, red and orange on his muzzle and belly, and spot of yellow between his joints. He looks healthy and content.

I don't think he felt threatened at any time. He just calmly walked backward, even the first time - he didn't go into emergency reverse with his back flippers. We should not imagine they see images just as we do. He probably reasoned that a) it doesn't feel like food or anything plant or animal, and b) it has no smell and can't be food, and c) its immobile, like a rock. It's useless and best ignored until it does something.
Noticed that too. And also there's some reflection on the aquarium sides, and under him at the back where he's digging to the bottom of it (if he can see that?) so he has some mirror experience already... and probably "realized" it's something like that.

This is so sweet. Leon went from being an abused lobster at the grocery store to being talked about and drawn by kids at school and becoming a Scottish Lord, with a nice little plot of land next to the sea. How beautiful.

Well, Leon did figure out that the mirror wasn't a threat. He turned his back on it. That's definitely a sign of intelligence. He may get used to the other objects and figure out how they work with time.

I think that given his turning his back on his reflection a second time (showing he didn't find it threatening), I think he recognised his reflection. Being in a tank for a while now, he's adjusted to actually having a reflection in the glass, although not a very vivid one. The mirror being a vivid reflection was probably really weird for him, but upon touching it and realising it's flat like the tank walls, he figured out it's just a particularly shiny "wall". It must be strange not knowing reflections exist, to suddenly being surrounded by them, then one day, there's a HD reflection at the bottom of your garden. He's honestly done really well to learn that he has a reflection and it's not dangerous
Sometimes they find those things in nature with all the rubbish that people throw away the mirror that is it was an excellent thought experiment I thought 😊
I think if the other senses are not involved, they come to the conclusion that it is not a physical threat and thus not important. Self reflection is reserved for humans I guess.

Maybe paintings of Leon cud be sold. An animal shelter did this. People sent them pics of their pets and the workers, who had no art skills at all had a great time doing renditions. I have a BA in ART. I LOVED the idea and the artistic outcomes. It raised alot of funding also. That was the point. And it was wildly successful.

I never knew I was so invested in the life and times of a lobster who came from a hopeless situation but got a good life going thanks to the kindness of a guy who clearly loves all living things, both animals and plants. Keep living the good life, Brady and Leon. And I can honestly say this is more fulfilling to watch than the next Marvel movie.

I watched another lobster rescue, I think the guy was more concerned about an aesthetically pleasing tank for him to look at instead of the lobster's needs.
I love how comfortable he is now, he doesn't look so crouched up anymore and hes got much more stronger colours come out on his body. I'd say hes entertained by you and the cat always popping in to day hello
I'm sure he's far less stressed than when had his claws banded. When you take an animal like a lobster, trap him, surface him, hibernate him (when you drastically and rapidly cool an animal like a lobster or a crab - you put them into a hibernatic-state: their body assumes that winter came early and cold - and, just like a bear in winter, their body goes into a mode of just keep my heart beating a few times per minute), and band his claws, you cause dramatic physiological changes with that animal. He knows he's not in the ocean. Lobsters are used to detecting the changes in water-pressure due to tides (it's low-tide so there is only 25 ft of water above me; vs., it's high-tide, so I'm in 35 ft of water) in water-temperature, in current, in salinity, etc.
Leon’s cautious nature after what he went through, and your speculations made me kind of see some of myself in him. Trauma responses to certain situations can definitely be on the unusual side. He’s a survivor like you said, and I’m so glad he has you to look after him now.

Reminded me of the first time any of my pets saw themselves in a mirror. At first they would bark or hiss, but after awhile they figured it out. One dog had to learn a second time after coming home from her first trip to the groomer. She didn't recognize herself and kept running from one reflective surface to another before realizing she just looked different lol.

Leon started out as a wee grocery store lobster and now he’s a land owner! They grow up so fast 🥺 (Also, no worries about the sponsorships! You do a good job of integrating them ❤️)

This whole series is awesome. Do NOT worry about getting some return on all your time, hard work, and animal rescue costs. In fact a video breaking down just what is involved financially and time wise might not be a bad idea to keep others from adopting a grocery store lobster and not really having the time, money, or knowledge to do it right.
Yes! He is VERY knowledgeable on aquariums and tanks and water even before adopting Leon. I would not know even where to begin. That would be a good video.
I kept a 2cm baby crayfish i netted out of a local marsh last summer. Now she is a beautiful adult crayfish. Her behaviour is similar to leons in many ways. She is also a blue morph(rare in wild crayfish) and is gorgeous. She fits comfortably into a 10 gallon tank, and dug her own burrow under a rock. If anyone wants to try something like this video, a crayfish is a good idea imo.

I love all critters anyway but appreciate like you the finer details about lobsters and learn that they are more scavenger rather than predator. Leon definitely street smart as described by his owner😊
From what I know of lobsters, if I recall correctly, they're notoriously "shy." Lobsters in large museum aquariums and such are usually the last to eat, since they back off when other animals are eating, and even just minor disturbances towards their food can get them to retreat. Often they have to be fed individually so that other animals don't just eat their stuff. Leon is kind of acting the same way, really. Except that it's unusual objects disturbing his food instead of other creatures. Might very well be that he's suspecting the whole setup to be a trap too, considering what he's been through. Comprehension and thoughts are somewhat hard to measure scientifically (and up until recently many of course notoriously believed they couldn't even feel pain all). So the jury is out whether his prior similar experiences is influencing his behaviour here or not, but maybe it is. I wouldn't rule it out at least Glad to see him and the other critters over there again!
Based on what I've learned about the psychology and behavior of higher-intelligence organisms; his previous experience most certainly colors his current behavior and reactions to the world around him. What's also amazing to think about is how the brain, every brain large and small, essentially "hallucinates" the world outside. Light, sound, touch, taste, smell... these are all simply data points that are reorganized and reimagined by the brain based on the inputs received via the sensory organs. Our brains then develop a "best guess" of what it's like "out there". Similar to our dreams. The experience while dreaming isn't based on any "real" inputs (mostly), yet often seems completely "real". Why? Simply because "real" is just the brain _imagining_ what "real" really is. Leon's brain does the same thing. And in those rare moments when I'm simply _observing_ the world around me... I wonder how different, _or alike_ , my experience is from Leon's...
@@bafflezbiz One can never truly know, really. In truth, one cannot know how similar our own experiences are, even among the same species. Colours and sounds may be entirely different (but described the same way due to how language learning works), we pick up on different things, we think in different ways. One could imagine it would vary even more between different species, but even among us humans we have no real way to tell how much it differs even from individual to individual. Something to think about, indeed.

I see a blueish sunset, but I call it red just like you because that's our label for "that color". @@bafflezbiz "Every brain large and small". Exactly that. I raised crickets and katydids in terrariums and ended up studying them to look for signs of intelligence. To do that, I learned to recognize individuals to see if there was any difference in behavior. And there was! Certain crickets were most definitely dominant. Some faught with moderate violance and some were dominant even with a lack of violence. Each was consistent in his style. Each dominant male held his own territory, too. And each had his own style for courting the lady crickets. And with my katydids, I had a batch of 12 who hatched in my terrarium. Each had their own personality. Always the same ones to eat first. Some more gentle than others. Some would explore the room when I opened the lid and some preferred to stay close. One even regularly chose to crawl on me. I would put him on a friend of mine who wanted to hold him, but that little guy always came right back to me. Once I learned how to recognize the crickets and katydids individually, their differences in behavior became obvious to me. And these were little creatures who only live for one season. And yet they showed clear differences as individuals. And they showed preferences. It was truly amazing to me to learn about them. And to see obvious intelligence in even these tiny creatures.

I love the fact that Leon has touched so many people. He'll never be able to understand the huge impact he's had on the world for such a small creature but in a way it's also beautiful that we can all be fascinated together by a lobster just being itself.
In the reef keeping hobby we talk about "pods" which is a catchall term for very small arthropods, including amphipods, copepods, mysis shrimp, and isopods. You may look into getting some to add to your tank. Food that he eats is still metabolized into waste but if it passes through his digestive system the buildup of toxic metabolic waste products by bacteria is reduced. They aren't big enough to bother him (virtually every single meal eaten by every single lobster ever in the wild has had microcrustaceans around for it) and their populations will rise and fall in response to how messy an eater he is more than anything. Might be worth getting your hands on some to add to the tank as a clean up crew.
Bioactive enclosures are becoming more popular in the reptile hobby too. It seems like a good deal for the animal, the owner, and the cleanup crew. Leon is awesome, I love his cute little face.

I love Leon’s beady little eyes. I don’t know what it is about them but it makes me really happy and it feels like there is something behind those eyes. All animals are so beautiful and they need to be treated with respect.
I just love Leon! My face hurts from smiling! A couple of weeks ago when I was in the grocery store I was commenting about how bad I feel for the lobsters. The guy working in the seafood department said that he does too and he started telling me about Leon. I then told him that I watch Leon's videos too. So, Leon has at least 2 fans in Mountain Top, PA!
That is a sweet story. I too, look around for live lobsters every time I visit a supermarket, in hopes that I can connect w someone who’s a Leon fan like myself. No luck yet !
Those paintings from the kids were astonishingly impressive. As an inland native I never ate lobster. It used to depress me to see them in the tanks at the local grocery too! They didn’t have name-tags either

I didnt wake up this morning thinking that watching a grocery store lobster becoming a pet would ease my anxiety and make me feel relaxed and calm, but here we are....I haven't liked a TH-cam channel this much in a long time! Kinda reminds of videos from my childhood learning about new things and feeling excited about it at the same time. The music, the calm voice, just watching Leon living his best lobster life, the funny cat stories and antidotes, it's refreshing compared to all the overly edited videos on TH-cam all about getting more followers. This feels more like watching someone happy to share his weird hobby lol, and I'm here for it!
Long live Leon, the ambassador for all lobsters in supermarkets! Leon has shown us how intelligent he is in this video, and overall, he has done more than a great job in helping us to think twice and give pause in our purchase of lobsters as seafood. Long live might be a thing.. Lobsters can easily get to a 100 years and sometimes more. If the Molting process in higher age thanks to their mass wouldnt kill most of them at some point or another they could in theory go way beyond 200years and more
I think Lord Leon recognized himself in the mirror the second time, since he had no problem giving his back at it then. I'm surprised how shy he is, always pictured lobesters as mean and scary. I'm happy that after what he must have gone through he got a nice second chance with you!
Most animals of any type are incredibly comprehensive, my wife and I are nursing an infant rabbit and it's AMAZING how she's starting to learn and interact with us like she understands us. We must protect this gift with nature at ALL costs!! Much love my dude!

Leon functions mostly off of instinct, not intellect. You can still have a dear pet who is a lobster like Leon, just as people have pet spiders they care for, but they're not comparable to bunnies or other mammals.

I honestly can’t believe, (but am greatly happy) that Leon the lobster has inspired so many people around the world. Its truly amazing what one little creature can accomplish.
I know. I was literally thinking just now that I wish I could send down a couple of bags of lovely Cape Cod beach sand from here in Massachusetts. After giving it the regular sand-rinsing treatment, that sand could be a perfect new wall-to-wall carpet for Leon.
It's amazing how happy he looks from the time you rescued him from a boiling pot. I think it's safe to say that lobster loves you. Bless your kind soul!!!!
You're probably right about him being traumatised by his time in commercial captivity. It would be interesting to try these tests again periodically to see if those memories fade or remain. Memory retention is different in many species. Thank you for posting this! I've been following Leon since the beginning, and I've found it fascinating!

It's insane that a video of a crustacean makes your hard life easier, I wish I was as simple as a brick and could be fulfilled by watching paint dry or a lobster in a tank.
Maybe you've read it, but the essay 'Consider the Lobster' by David Foster Wallace kind of goes into this topic of lobster comprehension. It's definitely philosophical and is focused on the ethics of consuming organisms that possess the capacity to feel or experience pain. It's not exactly about IQ but it does raise some important questions about consciousness. More than anything It's incredibly entertaining and insightful, like a lot of DFW's work. Leon might like it.
He used his tail! I’ve been waiting for that 😊 When you first placed him in the tank on day 1, it looked weak. But seeing him swim was cool and I definitely made a joyful noise for Leon. He’s definitely stronger and better now that he’s successfully used all of his amazing features. Please keep the updates coming because they are very peaceful and beautiful to witness
I am very happy to see Leon again, There is something quite calming about watching him swimming about, or crawling around. On particularly rough work days I've even been known to re-watch Leon's videos to help relax.. Cute little Kung-Fu kitty to. I live in coastal Georgia Near a Sea Turtle rescue center, and I like going to visit them too sometimes.
I've been surprised by how timid Leon is. Having those two huge "guns", I figured he wouldn't fear anything hehe. Perhaps leave a small glass on its side in there for a few days, so he can get used to it being there, then he might investigate it more with food under it. This's been a neat journey

Lobsters have a number of predators in the wild that they've evolved to be wary of. It's why they spend most of their time hiding amongst rocks and coral.
Lobsters are constantly battling for dominance and they have no problem fighting and eating each other. Not even to mention all the other critters that will eat them
Not sure how the first video in this series made my TH-cam feed and more puzzling why this caught my attention and I decided to open and watch....but like many others, I was mesmerized by the notion nicely presented and told by Brady's outstanding story telling and video skills. I. Can't. Stop. Watching. When I was 4-5 years old my grandparents brought me to an aquarium. Afterwards, in poor taste that I don't think they realized, they brought me to a seafood restaurant for lunch. There was a tank with lobster and they asked if I wanted one. I thought I was getting a pet so I picked out the smallest/ "cutest" one I could find and planned to name her Cindy. I cried when she was brought to me dead. My grandmother ate her lobster and part of Cindy but saved Cindy's shell to bring home to glue together and keep as my "pet". Of course it smelled AWFUL and my mom threw Cindy out while I was sleeping. I've refused to eat seafood since and makes me further adore these videos. I wish my child self could have watched this so long ago!

I just discovered Leon and your videos tonight: I just watched his whole story. I was in a serious car crash last week, lost my dad's car forever, have had a hard time at work since-- and this series about Leon is one of the first things I've experienced that has brought me calm and peace. Lobsters have always been the one animal I thought too cute to eat, and it really touched my heart seeing this one get to live a happy life. Thank you for doing what you do.

It seems I am late to this, but stumbled on Leon and his owner/rescuer Brady by chance, and found both unexpectedly captivating. I wasn't surprised to learn Brady is a professional filmmaker - that's why the quality is so good. I don't feel naturally drawn to lobsters, but it has been charming to witness Leon's transformation from sluggish and debilitated specimen destined only for the pot, to active and fascinating quirky pet. Definitely not cuddly, but still somehow loveable!
I think what must make Leon so heartwarming and have such staying power besides his positive story, is that he and his life is relatively normal. Sure, lobsters are super interesting and his tale of seafood to best pal is cherished, but I think the real hook for folks is just that Leon's doing a bit better now thanks to some kindness, and now he's a beacon of attainable averageness. If Leon can make it one more day, than so can any of us viewers. Like you said a couple videos back Brady, we all face hardships, all have our own stories to tell. But like Leon, we can make the most of what we have, and graciously make the best of what we're given. If Leon can survive a state spanning trip through traps and manufacturers and packagers and a bland purgatory tank where he's stripped of his claws and forced into solitude, only to eventually reach his utopia, then we all can make some of the way ourselves, bit by bit, clam shell by clam shell.

From being on display for someone to eat to a lord, Leon sure has came a long way. I do think he’s cautious because he’s learned from past experiences, I also noticed when you were cleaning him he didn’t run to his shelter almost like he didn’t want you to know where he hides incase you followed him home 😂 wonderful, wholesome content.
As a trauma impacted person living with PTSD, I can tell you that animals definitely do experience and remember trauma. I have certification in trauma studies and trauma is stored in the body just waiting to be triggered. I also manage a colony of Community Cats, what some people refer to as "feral", and I have seen first hand that these cats react to traumatic events in ways similar to humans. In fact, by using what I learned in my trauma trainings as well as my lived experience, I have been able "tame" several of these cats. If took me over a year to get there, but I went from not being able to touch any of them to now being able to pet, hold, and apply topical flea treatments to them. The main thing to remember is that individuals with trauma and PTSD have had their ability to trust shaken to the core. Leon has only been with Brady for 6 months, it would be interesting to try those activities with Leon every month and see if there's any change in his behavior. The longer he's with his human friend (and nothing bad happens to him) I bet the more he'll come out of his shell (no pun intended.)
I don't think they forget. My crayfish, Sebastian, didn't seem to. He could recognize at least 3 different people. And he had preferences. He would beg me for food every time I came near. Because I fed him bloodworms with a chopstick. He disliked my roommate at first and would flip him off with his claws. But once the roommate started feeding him, Sebastian started begging him, too. And the roommate had a friend who my crayfish never did like. He would flip her off immediately as soon as she came near. He never mixed up or forgot who was who. He was also able to forgive/adapt. He disliked my roommate at first because the roommate was the one who caught him, planning to use him as fishing bate. The roommate had stuffed Sebastian into a bottle to use later. Sebastian seemed to remember this because he was very defensive toward the roommate at first. But he didn't hold that against my roommate forever because the roommate started offering food. Sebastian forgave/adapted. I don't think he forgot, though. The roommate's friend never did anything to harm Sebastian. But she was rude and stuck her face right in front of the glass and talked loudly. And she never offered him food. Sebastian never forgot who she was. He flipped her off and brightened his colors every single time she came near. Even when she tried to be quiet and not get so close. He still knew who she was and didn't like her. So, if lobsters are anything like crayfish, I'd say Leon is probably pretty smart.
I bet he has some PTSD, poor baby.. You're an actual saint. I love seeing misunderstood animals being shown for who they truly are, intelligent beings! My crayfish and I thank you greatly for giving this gentle giant a home that is filled with everything he never had. I love you, Leon! 🦞❤

Ahhhh, Leon, the lobster Lord. Being the only lobster to be recognized by humans as capable of holding land he immediately skyrocketed in power. Thus becoming the first lobster lord… what will he do next?

I stopped eating lobster about 10 years ago when I read that they can live to be 100 and are very intelligent. This seemed preposterous to my family members in Maine.
I agree! It's good to make children aware of animals they don't know so they get used to them and might actually like them (and speak for hours about the cool armor 😂)
The first time Leon saw himself in the mirror he backed away all the way to his cave, which implies that he perceived a threat. The second time Leon looked in the mirror, he looked for a minute and then turned around and walked away, which implies that he did not perceive a threat. Whether or not he has any self awareness, it seems that he's a quick learner. Assessing risks is essential to survival in the wild.

A species of crab can learn to navigate a maze and still remember it up to two weeks later. The discovery demonstrates that crustaceans, which include crabs, lobsters and shrimp, have the cognitive capacity for complex learning, even though they have much smaller brains than many other animals.

@@Bradybrandwood I looked it up, and they are extremely smart critters but like almost evrey animal including dogs, cats, baccicly all non human primates including gorillas and chimpanzees, and even young humans, the reflection test is extremely hard to accomplish and if they pass its a sign of highly significant intelligence, most animals can't but some who can are humans over about a year, elephants, manta rays, and pigs, very interesting topic, and Leon is most definitely happy, healthy, and intelligent. I noticed that the second time Leon interacts with the mirror, he turns his back on it when walking away, as opposed to backing up all the way back to his cave. So at the very least, he seems to understand that the "other lobster" isn't a threat.
That's correct, mostly mirror tests are used to see if a animal is intelligent enough that they know its their own reflection. Both chimps and dolphins passed these tests meaning the recognize themselves, so this means that Leon learns that his reflection is safe or of no threat to his home since most likely his first reaction to his image he saw a larger lobster moving into Leon's territory
I think his reaction to the mirror was really interesting. Because of how lobster eyes work, I believe the reflection confused him and did not properly compute with how he was used to seeing the world, and had to adjust before giving it any critical thought.

Every time I see a lobster tank at a grocery store I think about trying it, I have fresh water fish tanks and wanted to check out salt water tanks.

I don't know if Brady got the idea from them or if it was an original thought on his part out of his enjoyment of Pets, but I am fine with it. The water is warm, (bad pun) jump in and enjoy, give me more to watch and learn. Brady is very good at production and does other things as well besides Pets. I wish him all the best, I subscribed watched his older videos and look forward to his future videos.

When you just have rescued Leon from the store, he was dull, brown-grey. As he become healthy, I realised, how vibrant and colourful he is! There is bluish hue on claws, red and orange on his muzzle and belly, and spot of yellow between his joints. He looks healthy and content.
I noticed this too! He's so colorful.

I noticed that when Leon checked out the mirror a second time, he didn’t back out in reverse. He actually did a full turn around. I think he may have concluded that the mirror isn’t a threat and he was able to completely turn around

I don't think he felt threatened at any time. He just calmly walked backward, even the first time - he didn't go into emergency reverse with his back flippers. We should not imagine they see images just as we do. He probably reasoned that a) it doesn't feel like food or anything plant or animal, and b) it has no smell and can't be food, and c) its immobile, like a rock. It's useless and best ignored until it does something.

Well, Leon did figure out that the mirror wasn't a threat. He turned his back on it. That's definitely a sign of intelligence. He may get used to the other objects and figure out how they work with time.
My cats are similar 1 doesnt care the other 2 recognize themselves and my turtle is weirdly smarter than 1 of my cats and recognizes herself

@@fernadogonzalez2940 When cats look in the mirror they think its another cat. A cat has never passed the mirror test, which is where you put a dot on their forehead, and if they try to groom it off themselves after looking in a mirror it shows that they know its them.
I think that given his turning his back on his reflection a second time (showing he didn't find it threatening), I think he recognised his reflection. Being in a tank for a while now, he's adjusted to actually having a reflection in the glass, although not a very vivid one. The mirror being a vivid reflection was probably really weird for him, but upon touching it and realising it's flat like the tank walls, he figured out it's just a particularly shiny "wall".
It must be strange not knowing reflections exist, to suddenly being surrounded by them, then one day, there's a HD reflection at the bottom of your garden. He's honestly done really well to learn that he has a reflection and it's not dangerous
Sometimes they find those things in nature with all the rubbish that people throw away the mirror that is it was an excellent thought experiment I thought 😊

He almost certainly didn't recognize it as himself, but as some other lobster. Regardless, he doesn't see this "other lobster" as a threat.
I think if the other senses are not involved, they come to the conclusion that it is not a physical threat and thus not important. Self reflection is reserved for humans I guess.

I love how this has evolved into full classes of children sending Leone paintings of himself. The power of the internet, all started from purchasing a lobster from the grocery store. Good on you, sir.
Maybe paintings of Leon cud be sold. An animal shelter did this. People sent them pics of their pets and the workers, who had no art skills at all had a great time doing renditions. I have a BA in ART. I LOVED the idea and the artistic outcomes. It raised alot of funding also. That was the point. And it was wildly successful.

I never knew I was so invested in the life and times of a lobster who came from a hopeless situation but got a good life going thanks to the kindness of a guy who clearly loves all living things, both animals and plants. I watched another lobster rescue, I think the guy was more concerned about an aesthetically pleasing tank for him to look at instead of the lobster's needs.
I love how comfortable he is now, he doesn't look so crouched up anymore and hes got much more stronger colours come out on his body. I'd say hes entertained by you and the cat always popping in to day hello
I'm sure he's far less stressed than when had his claws banded. When you take an animal like a lobster, trap him, surface him, hibernate him (when you drastically and rapidly cool an animal like a lobster or a crab - you put them into a hibernatic-state: their body assumes that winter came early and cold - and, just like a bear in winter, their body goes into a mode of just keep my heart beating a few times per minute), and band his claws, you cause dramatic physiological changes with that animal. He knows he's not in the ocean. Lobsters are used to detecting the changes in water-pressure due to tides (it's low-tide so there is only 25 ft of water above me; vs., it's high-tide, so I'm in 35 ft of water) in water-temperature, in current, in salinity, etc.

Leon’s cautious nature after what he went through, and your speculations made me kind of see some of myself in him. Trauma responses to certain situations can definitely be on the unusual side. He’s a survivor like you said, and I’m so glad he has you to look after him now.
The first time he sees the mirror he backs away, but the second time he turns around and walks, leaving his back exposed to the mirror. I think this means he's realized it's not a threat if he's willing to turn his back on it :)
Reminded me of the first time any of my pets saw themselves in a mirror. At first they would bark or hiss, but after awhile they figured it out. One dog had to learn a second time after coming home from her first trip to the groomer. She didn't recognize herself and kept running from one reflective surface to another before realizing she just looked different lol.

I kept a 2cm baby crayfish i netted out of a local marsh last summer. Now she is a beautiful adult crayfish. Her behaviour is similar to leons in many ways. She is also a blue morph(rare in wild crayfish) and is gorgeous. She fits comfortably into a 10 gallon tank, and dug her own burrow under a rock.
If anyone wants to try something like this video, a crayfish is a good idea imo.

From what I know of lobsters, if I recall correctly, they're notoriously "shy."
Lobsters in large museum aquariums and such are usually the last to eat, since they back off when other animals are eating, and even just minor disturbances towards their food can get them to retreat. Often they have to be fed individually so that other animals don't just eat their stuff. Leon is kind of acting the same way, really. Except that it's unusual objects disturbing his food instead of other creatures.
Might very well be that he's suspecting the whole setup to be a trap too, considering what he's been through. Comprehension and thoughts are somewhat hard to measure scientifically (and up until recently many of course notoriously believed they couldn't even feel pain all). So the jury is out whether his prior similar experiences is influencing his behaviour here or not, but maybe it is. I wouldn't rule it out at least

Based on what I've learned about the psychology and behavior of higher-intelligence organisms; his previous experience most certainly colors his current behavior and reactions to the world around him. What's also amazing to think about is how the brain, every brain large and small, essentially "hallucinates" the world outside. Light, sound, touch, taste, smell... these are all simply data points that are reorganized and reimagined by the brain based on the inputs received via the sensory organs. Our brains then develop a "best guess" of what it's like "out there". Similar to our dreams. The experience while dreaming isn't based on any "real" inputs (mostly), yet often seems completely "real". Why? Simply because "real" is just the brain _imagining_ what "real" really is.
Leon's brain does the same thing.
And in those rare moments when I'm simply _observing_ the world around me... I wonder how different, _or alike_ , my experience is from Leon's...

In truth, one cannot know how similar our own experiences are, even among the same species. Colours and sounds may be entirely different (but described the same way due to how language learning works), we pick up on different things, we think in different ways.
One could imagine it would vary even more between different species, but even among us humans we have no real way to tell how much it differs even from individual to individual.
Something to think about, indeed.

I see a blueish sunset, but I call it red just like you because that's our label for "that color". Apparently color is subjective on that level and obviously there's much more to our experience that is subject to the same subjective sameness... or possibly not same at all!

To do that, I learned to recognize individuals to see if there was any difference in behavior.
And there was! Certain crickets were most definitely dominant. Some faught with moderate violance and some were dominant even with a lack of violence. Each was consistent in his style. Each dominant male held his own territory, too. And each had his own style for courting the lady crickets.
And with my katydids, I had a batch of 12 who hatched in my terrarium. Each had their own personality. Always the same ones to eat first. Some more gentle than others. Some would explore the room when I opened the lid and some preferred to stay close. One even regularly chose to crawl on me. I would put him on a friend of mine who wanted to hold him, but that little guy always came right back to me.
Once I learned how to recognize the crickets and katydids individually, their differences in behavior became obvious to me.
And these were little creatures who only live for one season. And yet they showed clear differences as individuals. And they showed preferences.
It was truly amazing to me to learn about them. And to see obvious intelligence in even these tiny creatures.
I like how all these youtubers are into expensive cars and exotic pets. And then there is this guy just documenting a pet supermarket lobster and everyone is loving it 😂

That's because nobody likes capitalism shoved in their faces anymore. We've had enough of it on YT for the past 7+ years. Everyone is bored and over it. I love the fact that Leon has touched so many people.
He'll never be able to understand the huge impact he's had on the world for such a small creature but in a way it's also beautiful that we can all be fascinated together by a lobster just being itself.
In the reef keeping hobby we talk about "pods" which is a catchall term for very small arthropods, including amphipods, copepods, mysis shrimp, and isopods. You may look into getting some to add to your tank. Food that he eats is still metabolized into waste but if it passes through his digestive system the buildup of toxic metabolic waste products by bacteria is reduced. They aren't big enough to bother him (virtually every single meal eaten by every single lobster ever in the wild has had microcrustaceans around for it) and their populations will rise and fall in response to how messy an eater he is more than anything. Might be worth getting your hands on some to add to the tank as a clean up crew.

A couple of weeks ago when I was in the grocery store I was commenting about how bad I feel for the lobsters. I didnt wake up this morning thinking that watching a grocery store lobster becoming a pet would ease my anxiety and make me feel relaxed and calm, but here we are....I haven't liked a TH-cam channel this much in a long time! Kinda reminds of videos from my childhood learning about new things and feeling excited about it at the same time. The music, the calm voice, just watching Leon living his best lobster life, the funny cat stories and antidotes, it's refreshing compared to all the overly edited videos on TH-cam all about getting more followers. This feels more like watching someone happy to share his weird hobby lol, and I'm here for it!
Long live Leon, the ambassador for all lobsters in supermarkets! Leon has shown us how intelligent he is in this video, and overall, he has done more than a great job in helping us to think twice and give pause in our purchase of lobsters as seafood. Most animals of any type are incredibly comprehensive, my wife and I are nursing an infant rabbit and it's AMAZING how she's starting to learn and interact with us like she understands us. We must protect this gift with nature at ALL costs!! Much love my dude!
Rabbits and lobsters are not comparable. Mammals are often intelligent. Bugs - like Leon is - usually operate on instinct rather than intellect.

I know. I was literally thinking just now that I wish I could send down a couple of bags of lovely Cape Cod beach sand from here in Massachusetts. After giving it the regular sand-rinsing treatment, that sand could be a perfect new wall-to-wall carpet for Leon.

You're probably right about him being traumatised by his time in commercial captivity. It would be interesting to try these tests again periodically to see if those memories fade or remain. Memory retention is different in many species. Thank you for posting this! I've been following Leon since the beginning, and I've found it fascinating!

Maybe you've read it, but the essay 'Consider the Lobster' by David Foster Wallace kind of goes into this topic of lobster comprehension. It's definitely philosophical and is focused on the ethics of consuming organisms that possess the capacity to feel or experience pain. It's not exactly about IQ but it does raise some important questions about consciousness. More than anything It's incredibly entertaining and insightful, like a lot of DFW's work. Leon might like it.

He used his tail! I’ve been waiting for that 😊 When you first placed him in the tank on day 1, it looked weak. But seeing him swim was cool and I definitely made a joyful noise for Leon. He’s definitely stronger and better now that he’s successfully used all of his amazing features. Please keep the updates coming because they are very peaceful and beautiful to witness
I am very happy to see Leon again, There is something quite calming about watching him swimming about, or crawling around. On particularly rough work days I've even been known to re-watch Leon's videos to help relax.. Cute little Kung-Fu kitty to. I live in coastal Georgia Near a Sea Turtle rescue center, and I like going to visit them too sometimes.
I've been surprised by how timid Leon is. Having those two huge "guns", I figured he wouldn't fear anything hehe. Perhaps leave a small glass on its side in there for a few days, so he can get used to it being there, then he might investigate it more with food under it. This's been a neat journey

Lobsters have a number of predators in the wild that they've evolved to be wary of. It's why they spend most of their time hiding amongst rocks and coral.
Lobsters are constantly battling for dominance and they have no problem fighting and eating each other. Not even to mention all the other critters that will eat them
Not sure how the first video in this series made my TH-cam feed and more puzzling why this caught my attention and I decided to open and watch....but like many others, I was mesmerized by the notion nicely presented and told by Brady's outstanding story telling and video skills. Thanks for sharing your adventures with Leon with us and I have enjoyed all aspects of the video content...your cats....your sponsors...and sharing all the feedback you've received...especially the elementary art and letters from kids. I. Can't. Stop. Watching. When I was 4-5 years old my grandparents brought me to an aquarium. Afterwards, in poor taste that I don't think they realized, they brought me to a seafood restaurant for lunch. There was a tank with lobster and they asked if I wanted one. I thought I was getting a pet so I picked out the smallest/ "cutest" one I could find and planned to name her Cindy. I cried when she was brought to me dead. My grandmother ate her lobster and part of Cindy but saved Cindy's shell to bring home to glue together and keep as my "pet". Of course it smelled AWFUL and my mom threw Cindy out while I was sleeping. I've refused to eat seafood since and makes me further adore these videos. I wish my child self could have watched this so long ago!
I imagine that class of children watching this and seeing their drawings - how exciting for them!

I just discovered Leon and your videos tonight: I just watched his whole story. I was in a serious car crash last week, lost my dad's car forever, have had a hard time at work since-- and this series about Leon is one of the first things I've experienced that has brought me calm and peace. Lobsters have always been the one animal I thought too cute to eat, and it really touched my heart seeing this one get to live a happy life. Thank you for doing what you do.
Jesus loves you so much and I need to tell you that He offers you His Righteousness as a gift He will wash you completely Clean from ALL your sins and wants you to Come to him it says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Meaning the punishment for our sins is Hell Because we are not obedient to God. But Jesus was completely obedient to God He went to the cross to die for us and now we do not trust in our obedience but in His. it says, “Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.” Gods wrath and Judgment went on Jesus Because He was carrying our sins so God punished Jesus as if he had sinned now God will Justly treat you like you have never sinned after you believe upon Him and receive his righteousness as a gift and put your trust in Jesus and in he’s obedience instead of you trying to be right with God by the things you do. so when the blood of Jesus is over you God cannot treat you like a sinner! He never wants to but now He can Justly treat you like you never sinned Jesus was our sacrifice for our sins!
Tell God you admit your a sinner and ask Him to wash you with His blood and receive His Gift of righteousness. Come out of darkness and into light!
it’s your part to receive Jesus to believe upon Him. It says,
“Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

It seems I am late to this, but stumbled on Leon and his owner/rescuer Brady by chance, and found both unexpectedly captivating. I wasn't surprised to learn Brady is a professional filmmaker - that's why the quality is so good. I don't feel naturally drawn to lobsters, but it has been charming to witness Leon's transformation from sluggish and debilitated specimen destined only for the pot, to active and fascinating quirky pet. Definitely not cuddly, but still somehow loveable!
I think what must make Leon so heartwarming and have such staying power besides his positive story, is that he and his life is relatively normal. Sure, lobsters are super interesting and his tale of seafood to best pal is cherished, but I think the real hook for folks is just that Leon's doing a bit better now thanks to some kindness, and now he's a beacon of attainable averageness. If Leon can make it one more day, than so can any of us viewers. Like you said a couple videos back Brady, we all face hardships, all have our own stories to tell. But like Leon, we can make the most of what we have, and graciously make the best of what we're given.
If Leon can survive a state spanning trip through traps and manufacturers and packagers and a bland purgatory tank where he's stripped of his claws and forced into solitude, only to eventually reach his utopia, then we all can make some of the way ourselves, bit by bit, clam shell by clam shell.

From being on display for someone to eat to a lord, Leon sure has came a long way. I do think he’s cautious because he’s learned from past experiences, I also noticed when you were cleaning him he didn’t run to his shelter almost like he didn’t want you to know where he hides incase you followed him home 😂 wonderful, wholesome content.
Even thought Leon didn't tip the containers to get the food, I still think this is great enrichment for him as you can see Leon is thinking about it!
I like how he saves some food for a little snack later 😂
As a trauma impacted person living with PTSD, I can tell you that animals definitely do experience and remember trauma. I have certification in trauma studies and trauma is stored in the body just waiting to be triggered. I also manage a colony of Community Cats, what some people refer to as "feral", and I have seen first hand that these cats react to traumatic events in ways similar to humans. In fact, by using what I learned in my trauma trainings as well as my lived experience, I have been able "tame" several of these cats. If took me over a year to get there, but I went from not being able to touch any of them to now being able to pet, hold, and apply topical flea treatments to them. The main thing to remember is that individuals with trauma and PTSD have had their ability to trust shaken to the core. Leon has only been with Brady for 6 months, it would be interesting to try those activities with Leon every month and see if there's any change in his behavior. The longer he's with his human friend (and nothing bad happens to him) I bet the more he'll come out of his shell (no pun intended.)
I don't think they forget. My crayfish, Sebastian, didn't seem to. He could recognize at least 3 different people. And he had preferences.
He would beg me for food every time I came near. Because I fed him bloodworms with a chopstick.
He disliked my roommate at first and would flip him off with his claws. But once the roommate started feeding him, Sebastian started begging him, too.
And the roommate had a friend who my crayfish never did like. He would flip her off immediately as soon as she came near.
He never mixed up or forgot who was who.
He was also able to forgive/adapt.
He disliked my roommate at first because the roommate was the one who caught him, planning to use him as fishing bate. The roommate had stuffed Sebastian into a bottle to use later. Sebastian seemed to remember this because he was very defensive toward the roommate at first.
But he didn't hold that against my roommate forever because the roommate started offering food. Sebastian forgave/adapted.
I don't think he forgot, though.
The roommate's friend never did anything to harm Sebastian. But she was rude and stuck her face right in front of the glass and talked loudly. And she never offered him food. Sebastian never forgot who she was. He flipped her off and brightened his colors every single time she came near. Even when she tried to be quiet and not get so close. He still knew who she was and didn't like her.
So, if lobsters are anything like crayfish, I'd say Leon is probably pretty smart.
I bet he has some PTSD, poor baby.. You're an actual saint. I love seeing misunderstood animals being shown for who they truly are, intelligent beings! My crayfish and I thank you greatly for giving this gentle giant a home that is filled with everything he never had. I love you, Leon! 🦞❤
I don't think leon rememberes all thats happened to him he might but I don't think he does and I think he's acting on instinct not based off of past experiences but I'm not an expert I'm just a nerd
I had a crayfish too! I cared very much about him. His name was Sebastian. I'll bet you see a lot of intelligence in your crayfish. I know I did in Sebastian.

You’re absolutely correct. None of us could understand what he’s thinking, or why he’s doing what he’s doing. I guess you could say the same goes for all of us. It’s really nice that we can just watch him without judging him and enjoy the nature of him. I so appreciate the opportunity.

Ahhhh, Leon, the lobster Lord. Being the only lobster to be recognized by humans as capable of holding land he immediately skyrocketed in power. Thus becoming the first lobster lord… what will he do next?
I just found your videos and the way you commentate things are so amusing. Watching the life of Leon and his road from being a display lobster ready to be cooked to being a Scottish Lord that assisted in removing 1k pound worth of trash from the ocean, is amazing. Love the cats involvement too!
Leon and I have the same feeding schedule and we both have a hard time cleaning our backs. Who knew I would have so much in common with a lobster

I stopped eating lobster about 10 years ago when I read that they can live to be 100 and are very intelligent. This seemed preposterous to my family members in Maine.

I agree! It's good to make children aware of animals they don't know so they get used to them and might actually like them (and speak for hours about the cool armor 😂)
