- That’s not what I meant to say at all…
Looks like it’s that time of year again where I talk about a Car Seat Headrest song. This time it’s Bodys, the gateway drug of the CSH fanbase.
Special thanks to ethanJP (Cocadope) for allowing me to use his artwork in the thumbnail:

Man, the 2032 Cardinal West Christmas special is gonna be crazy
This song is so special to me. My husband picked it for the last song at our wedding (i picked the first dance) ❤ it was the perfect choice, jumping and dancing together while surrounded by friends and family, i get all warm and fuzzy every time I hear this song. So glad to see it get some appreciation
that sounds so amazing omg!!!
thats adorable
Yeah I can relate to this *so* hard. My *(something)* and I decided 'marriage is dumb and fuck it" and I do not regret then name but we both think it is kinda stupid but we love it, once we had ben young and stupid, now we are old and stupid... and stupid... and stupid... stupid... stupid.
"I'm sick of meaning, I just wanna hold you." I feel like if we all embraced that fully, the world would be saved.
Such a beautiful Absurdist statement
@@danorott Yes, like. Yes, a lot. The line is like... atleastthree lines. He is just being awkward. He is sick of looking for meaning. He is sick of trying to justify why he just wants to hold you. Yes all of those.
My girlfriend passed earlier this year, but we saw carseat headrest together and this was her favorite track of theirs
I went to see CSH last March and everyone went absolutely insane when Bodys came on to the point where they actually turned down the mic to let the crowd sing along louder lol
that would be a highlight of my life, really hope Will gets better
@@ktln6664 honestly the highlight of that show was will doing an encore with no mask, apparently that's pretty rare these days
heyy i saw them in march too!!!! fun times :D
Sober to death was what introduced me to csh, i have since then listened to their whole discography (even rough demos and all) but sober to death still holds a special place in my heart. I have yet to find a song that capture the painful feeling of youthful love as STD.
Took me a few seconds to realize you abbreviated sober to death as "STD" at the end and not the other thing
heheh std
sober to death might be the best song i will hear throughout my entire life
Sober to Death is definitely my favorite song off the album, too good 😫
same very nice very love
a favorite line of mine is from Beach Life-In-Death where Will says “oh please let me join your cult, I’ll paint my face in your colors”. I feel like it really shows the theme of obsession present throughout the entire album
omg and the "last night i dreamed he was trying to kill you // i woke up and i was trying to kill you" i interpret it as being so obsessed and clung to that person that youre unintentionally suffocating them with your presence
this song is a staple at any college party, me and my friends play it and it makes us so emotional
i wish i could dance to this at a college party 😭😭
me too!! ive danced to this song more times than i can count, and we all have it memorized by heart
the npr tiny desk concert is my favorite version of sober to death. everyone singing "you and me won't be alone no more" just hits differently.
19:12 I always thought this lyric was “When we’re dead… when we’re” instead of “When we dance… when we” I like to think it’s a double-entendre and that the first (“incorrect”) way of hearing it gives it another meaning; that they’ll forget their awkwardness when they’re dead too. They can’t have shame when they’re too busy dancing and when they’re dead. Another life/death comparison.
Great video!!! I love this song!
For now they are alive (most of them) some of them are dead, this whole song is honestly subtly terrifying. Like I defiantly got the whole gay reading from it as well. Why are they being so secretive... oh. Oh, wait... no it is obvious why.
For me Bodys is my favorite CSH song, it was also the first one of theirs I heard. It is closely followed by Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales, I want you to know that I’m awake/I hope that you’re asleep, and Beach Life-in-death
I love all of those as well, though I'll admit that "I Want You To Know..." is hard for me to listen to given how raw it is.
Bodys is the only csh song ive listened to and I really liked it, now knowing how deeper the meaning of it goes I like it even more, especially the relatability of being in the closet and unable to express feelings in public (even if it means no longer seeing it as just an upbeat indie song), really great video!
In a delicate mood. Health problems last night, living through a 7+ yr long distance relationship with some wolf guy. I'mma cry
i got into car seat headrest from an unhealthy relationship i had funny enough. i always identified twin fantasy even in the the middle of the relationship, it was my first queer experience so i was slow to realize the faults in both me and him. twin fantasy always felt like a relationship falling apart due to both parties not communicating and one putting more in than the other.
my favorite songs currently are 2:24, when will my man come, a good bridge to never cross, napoleon, psst teenagers (3), Oh! starving (3), and famous prophets (minds)
(edited for spelling mistakes)
Nice, a lot of stuff from their earlier eras. The original Oh! Starving from 3 will always be my favorite version, and Portrait of the Artist is another I go back to a lot.
I've always seen the "Don't you realize our bodies could fall apart at any second" lyric as will stating that the relationship is getting "serious" and hinting at the fact that they have a link that isn't exclusively physical, like they are connected beyond their physical barriers and are now intertwined in an emotional/affective way. beyond their bodies.
Thanks for the video! Right now, my favorite csh song is The Ballad of the Costa Concordia. The third and fourth verses(?) starting with the line "Let us take you back to where we came in" goes so fucking hard. That section of the song so perfectly articulates the angst of realizing the root of the problem with the broader social order while simultaneously understanding that you as an individual are completely irrelevant to its continuation or betterment. The "I give up"s and the force by which they are repeated show just how painful and violent and persistent the feeling has to be to push through in a way that can be heard, and how exhausting (not freeing) the feeling is. I'm also reading The Denial of Death right now and its very interesting to see how ideas from that book inform the entire album (the idea of "Cosmic Hero" being the most obvious example of this).
I've always loved how they reused the chords from Hi Life on the intro of Ballad, just altered slightly. And I also love those lines near the ending - they manage to both hit really hard and yet be quite funny, in a morbid way:
Stopped at the borderline, they stripped his disguise
So he read a book that won a Pulitzer prize
It was about death
It didn't help
He saw himself in it
And he was disturbed at the conclusions that it led to
But he couldn't say what because the author was dead too
And so though he made fun of us, he has now become one of us
my personal favorite off this album is probably “beach life-in-death” because i’m from the same hometown as will toledo and it’s cool hearing references to places that i know locally.
Leesburg? I'm also from NoVA, so it's really cool to think he was recording the numbered albums only a few dozen miles from where I live.
@@CardinalWest yep, the high school he went to is like 5 miles from where i grew up
Omg same! My friend goes to the school that he went too
sober to death will always have a special place in my heart. i’d love to watch you break it down
That was a great analysis! I also love hearing people talk about CSH's music lmao.
Honestly, I first discovered some of their songs through a friend. I think those were "Sober to Death" and "Bodys" as well as some from Monomania. At the time I was vaguely aware of the connections between different songs but didn't read too much into it/understand the narrative. One day I decided to actually listen to more of Twin Fantasy. I ended up listening to Beach Life-in-Death and my God, I instantly fell in love with that song. I think it was the first part that truly reeled me in, it really brought some vivid imagery to my mind and conveyed meaning in a way I wasn't used to. I felt a sense of connection to the song. There was still so much left unsaid and it felt intriguing. As the song progressed and different ideas emerged and were explored throughout it, I just knew it was one of the best songs I've ever heard. To this day it remains my favourite CSH song.
BLID was what really pushed me to listen to the rest of TF and truly appreciate it, as well as go on to give other parts of the discography a try. It really serves its role well, and understanding it was what made me appreciate the overarching narrative as well. The experiences outlined in the song also just speak to me a tonne, and I was greatly surprised with how someone was able to put all of it into words.
TF (both versions) and Monomania remain my favourite albums overall, it's really fascinating how one band's music can affect you.
Thanks! And I certainly understand why BLID seems to be the go-to song for much of the fanbase. On my first listen to the entire album, by the time I got a few minutes into BLID I was mesmerized, though I think the moment it fully clicked for me as a masterpiece was when Stop Smoking gets called back to in the middle of High to Death.
When I first listened to Twin Fantasy, I thought of Bodys as just a catchy song because of the more upbeat vibe. The more I listened to the album, though, the more I loved it for the lyrics. I am not nearly this insightful, so this video has only made me appreciate it more. thanks for the uploads, I can't wait for next year's video on CSH :p
this is surprisingly well made, and a really good analysis of this song! hope to see more content like this in the future!
i first discovered csh after a friend recommended it to me about a year ago, and now i'm completely obsessed with their discography.
i'd really like to see another twin fantasy track covered, maybe Famous Prophets? or something off of How to Leave Town because that's my favorite album hehe
Thanks! I'll have to give some thought about what song I'd like to cover next time. I do really love Hey, Space Cadet, but Famous Prophets and Beach Life-In-Death also have tons of depth to them (as do Boxing Day and The Gun Song from NYM), so I guess we'll see.
I now love the song "Bodys" by Car Seat Headrest even more because of this 24 minute analysis!!!!!
most sane CSHR fan
Man, I was afraid to click this video because I associate(d) Bodies with one of the lowest points of my life (missing my gf far away and fearing for our relationship because of the distance) where I related to a much more depressing interpretation of this. But I’m so glad I did, you really put a much more hopeful interpretation into my perspective helping me enjoy the song the way I used to. Away from the anxiety of losing the frail happiness in life and appreciating and celebrating it because it’s beautiful and special because of this frailty. The vulnerability and anxiety is still there but it’s worth it pushing through. The happiness can be found. (My gf and I are still together and happier than ever) Thank you.
Also my other csh favourites are drunk drivers/ killer whales, knife in the coffee, something soon and fill in the blank
I lovvveee fill in the blank
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a musical analysis video with such good editing. Really just amazing work
Twin Fantasy is my favorite thing as an entire experience, but my favorite song independently is Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales, especially the end section where Will just yells :3
DD/KW was a song I thought was just ok at first, but it gradually grew on me to the point where it might even be in my top 10 CSH songs now - top 15 definitely. I especially love the lyrics in the second verse section (beginning with "It's too late to articulate it...")
thankyou for talking about this song
absolutely phenomenal video as always and i’m not even finished
i love your analysis. so many analyses i’ve seen of this album specifically are ridiculously far reaching, but i agree with all of your interperetation, and this is one of my favorite songs ever 😁🫵
There’s something so innocent and pure about the line “That’s not what I mean to say at all, I mean. I’m sick of meaning, I just wanna hold you.” It captures that feeling of falling in love so perfectly.
favorite section in any csh song is the tempo changes in the end of sober to death. fell headfirst in love when i heard it. i think that was the first song i heard by them and it's probably still my favorite :D
Really incredible video. I started listening to CSH because of Teens of Denial, but fell in love with this album as well. Bodies is an absolute banger, and I love the extra meaning you've helped uncover here. I would love to see a video on Beach Life in Death, though I feel the meaning of that song is much clearer. It's just my favorite song.
Listened to the whole album last night, I see why you like them. Thanks for adding to my library.
Alfo Media also did a video about why he loves this song in particular, and it's been my favorite CSH song ever since
The line in Beach Life-in Death “I don’t want to go insane, I don’t want to have schizophrenia” is incredibly impactful to me. My family has a long history of mental illness and violence that extends to myself unfortunately. I never want to hurt anyone with my issues, and it’s terrifying thinking that it is a possibility should things ever get worse.
Oh I love Bodys, it has been my top song of the year on spotify 2 years in a row! But I think my favorite csh song has to be Beach Life-in-Death, at least in 2020 it was. There's a certain niche that song fills when you're 17 and stressed out of your mind, so it had a certain something to it then. I really have been liking the new album recently though, I like Deadlines (hostile) and (thoughtful) a lot, though I like thoughtful more, and despite how much other fans seem to not like them for being different, I like Can't Cool Me Down and Hollywood a lot too. There's a lot of good ones to choose from! The whole twin fantasy album in general is just so good as a whole piece to listen to at once that I would even count listening to that start to finish as it's own thing
Thank you for making a video on this song. I am so happy I found this channel and hope you make more videos on this album. It is extremely special to me and I cannot talk about it enough.
Not a huge CSH before seeing this but now I'm convinced I haven't given this album the proper time. Amazing analysis, instant sub 👍
one of my favorite csh songs (and for sure my favorite csh lyrics) is The Gun Song. it's not as instrumentally complex as a lot of his other work, but it makes up for that with the incredible lyrics that define it. hard to pick just one or two lyrics too, the whole thing is brilliant
The Gun Song is absolutely phenomenal, quite possibly my favorite song of all time.
Great video!❤
The accurate guitar animations didn't go unnoticed. I really appreciate the attention to detail!
very wonderful examination!! this is my favorite song on twin fantasy, perhaps favorite csh song, so it's nice to hear someone break down what makes it so good!
Love the fret-accurate animation!
The gun song and anchorite are probably my favorite csh songs. the last 3 minutes of anchorite and verse 10 on the gun song are peak csh
The Gun Song is an absolute masterpiece - and I love Anchorite, but that song is so sad that it's genuinely hard for me to listen to.
I really didn't know how this song hid such a deep meaning, I hope you come back with these videos!
Continue mano!
tbf for me the gateway drug to csh was Beach Life-in-Death through a glass beach cover.
Great video! Too good actually, watching it made me wish I went into the same depth with the music I listen to. This channel introduced me to CSH, I think it was a Q & A video (which I can't find) where you recommended Twin Fantasy. I listened to it and was hooked immediately, then the High to Death video came out right after I got into it. I listened to Twin Fantasy for a while, and have started making my way down the discography through Teens of Style, How to Leave Town, and now Teens Of Denial. Recently I had a stressful move and now I find myself with a long commute on the bus. With nothing to do but listen to music Teens of Denial has been a big help. In particular rocking out to Destroyed by Hippie Powers and (Joe Gets Kick Out of School for Using) Drugs is also really good.
For other songs I like:
The Ballad of the Costa Concordia interested me with the title. Not knowing the lyrics or its relationship to other tracks, it seems very random. I don't even know how much of it is actually about the ship. It did get me to rewatch Internet Historians video about it though. The lyrics "Now we download all our shit for free" commute "I used to like the morning, I'd survived another night". Also on Twin Fantasy, Stop Smoking (We Love You) is nice and simple, I actually found the chords online and learned it on guitar.
I had seen some stuff from this band kind of around but I never really knew about them. Thank you for the introduction with the 2 videos you did on it! Thank you for introducing me to CSH!
And keep up the amazing work on your videos!
I actually like "it's only sex" a lot, I mean, I don't listen to car seat headrest a lot but "It's only sex" and "destroyed by hippie powers" have a special place in my heart and my silly little playlists.
I found out about Car Seat Headrest from this video. Thank you so much
I don’t have a favorite song by csh I’ve only heard the two songs you made videos about. I just binged all your vids and saw these and watched them. But my boyfriend loves csh so this has given me some good talking points. Thanks
I’ve recently got into csh, and i am SO SO happy I have
Bodys is masterpiece. Literally one of my favorite songs
crazy how i used to skip this cos of the near minute long intro, now it's one of my faves!
This video is absolutely great man can't wait for more
I love car seat headrest, and your video on Sober To Death last year was so good, I am glad u made another. :) I shared it to my friends idk if they watched it but hey ur analysis is so good and u boil down and explain everything I love about csh and even point out things I don't realize, and I love these vids and am already excited for next years. I am never able to pick a favorite song by them, but I definitely related to several of their songs throughout my broken relationship that I went through recently. I related to I want you to know that I'm awake/ I hope you're asleep, Jus' Tired, basically all of Monomania once we broke up. but yea love ur vid i jus wanted to contribute a comment discussing csh since it is my fav band and i love discussing them
i dont have anyone to discuss this band with and I literally listen to them all the time (14.5k minutes listened to just them last year), so I will rant for hours aboutr them and nmy relationship w their music :)
Thanks! And if you're interested, another TH-camr called Quoteth recently started making videos discussing CSH songs and albums - I think they'll be remastering several of their videos into one longer piece soon.
@@CardinalWest hahaha I literally just watched two of their videos on TF and Monomania... I personally liked ur more in depth dive into one song approach more than their approach, but they had a good perspective w looking at the music and I definitely enjoyed the vids. I also realized I accidentally said Sober to Death instead of High to Death in my original comment, but u knew what i meant lolz.
This is one of the greatest songs of all time from where I sit, but that album art, given the themes, is absolute perfection as far as I'm aware.
God I love this song, Twin Fantasy is my favorite album ever made and this song encapsulates the writing style that makes it so stupidly memorable
Mirror to mirror is so much better imo. Excellent video, love it
car seat headrest video essay THATS what im the target demographic for
I still love the breakdown into the guitar solo in "Cute Thing". The chorus in Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales is also one of my favorite choruses in a song period, amazing lyrics and songwriting
Noticed that you put los borrochos as one of CSH's "greatest songs" and I'm happy to hear that my most recent obsession isn't without merit. Instead of having a song that you highlighted in your video, I'd like to say that dreams fall hard is probably one of my favorite songs on NYM. The backing piano throughout the song is a nice treat that we don't get to hear a lot in CSH songs (kinda helps me realize that a lot of my favorite csh songs use instruments that aren't conventionally in their songs. Costa Concordia and the trumpet, ending of Dramamine and it's heavy synth use). Dreams fall hard almost feels like a melancholic take on bodys, ironically enough. Will confessing love and desperately holding onto it despite the external factors that come with it.
When I first heard Los Borrachos a while ago, I didn't really care for it, but when I re-listened to Monomania in one sitting earlier this year, something about it just clicked for me - it might be one of my top 10 CSH songs now.
And one of my favorite unconventional uses of an instrument is on Misheard Lyrics, where the piano is almost used as a bassline.
2:41 I think CSH has such a devoted fan base partly for this reason-by reusing motifs from other works, it's almost like a fun scavenger hunt, ur REWARDED for paying attention, being a fan
Bodys is one of my favorite csh songs but nothing compares close to jus’ tired for me. I love everything about it, the sound changes from the beginning to the end, the lyrics, and the overall bitter sweetness of it. one of my favorites off nervous young man
Nervous Young Men has so many good songs in such a variety of genres, it's probably my second-favorite CSH album after Face to Face.
I’m a total Twin Fantay stan so if I tried to list my favorite CSH songs it would be pretty repetitive 😅 some of my favorites not from TF are Fill in the Blank, 1937 State Park, Overexposed, Maud Gone (Teens of Style version specifically) and Something Soon
I went to go see car seat headrest in concert with my boyfriend last march i believe, and I'm pretty sure that was our first date too. Im a more casual fan of CSH, so Bodys was the only song other than It's Only Sex that I knew at the time. We had a lot of fun, and I think after seeing this interpretation of the song I appreciate the song and that experience so much more now
I love this video, Bodys is one of my favorite songs of all time
Love this channel, thanks for sharing your passions ❤️❤️
My favorite song from them ❤️ Great video!
The "I would speak this to you in song" verses defiantly come off as a gay kid before 2010-2015 or so. You have to let the person you are talking to know you are hitting on them but nobody else can know. Talking about being aware of romantic advances in such an awkward almost covert manner... yeah. Yep, I had to do that, ran away as soon as I could.
times to die is my favorite currently, but this album will always mean the most to me simply because my closest friends recommended it to me to get into csh with them
This video was very well made, thank you for the viewing experience
it would be cool if this year you made a video about a song from the mirror to mirror version of the album
New video idea. " Why I love cardinal west"
Drunk drivers/killer whales is one of my favorite songs in the whole world actually the whole album of teens of denial is probably my favorite album of all time. Love the deep dive into the lyrics
i dont care please get out of my recommended ( this is a message to youtube this video is proabably good)
My favorite album of theirs is HTLT with IWYTKIA/IHYA being my favorite
I really think you should make a video on beach life-in-death. The song is one of my favorite and one of the best in their whole discography, although it would be a very long video.
Haha it's one I'm considering, but there would certainly be a *lot* to break down.
>We're young
>We're thin (most of us)
>We're alive (most of us)
Currently, Maud Gone!
I'm curious, do you prefer the original or the Teens of Style version? I'm 50/50 on them overall (I like both versions of Maud Gone about as much, same with Oh! Starving, but I really prefer the originals of Los Borrachos and No Passion, and the ToS versions of Strangers and Times to Die.
@@CardinalWest I tend to prefer the ToS version of Los Borrachos and Maude Gone, I like both versions of Oh! Starving as well. I think the original No passion is definitely better for me, as well as Times To Die, and Strangers I am split on.
@@CardinalWest Both are nice, though I prefer the ToS version. It being of higher quality makes it resonate with me more (I haven't dug too deep into their discography - slowly getting to their earlier songs!)
i havent finished the video but just wanted to note bodys does rehash lyrics, with the "is it the chorus yet?" line being from 806 from nervous young men
Oh dang, I missed that - nice catch!
I just discovered your channel this week and I have been busy gobbling up all of the content I can. I'm interested in your book and I think I would really enjoy it. Have you considered making an audiobook?
Thanks! I think that my publisher has plans to eventually put out an audiobook, but it's up to them, and it wouldn't be me doing the voiceover.
cant discuss their songs since I'm not into this style of production and 'dirty' mixing. If I were, I would probably be more into black metal as well. For non standard structures and time signatures I personally go for longer Devin Townsand's songs, King Crimson, HAKEN or Ningen Isu. As for lyrics I don't really go for much interpretation anymore. King Crimson has some depth to theirs, Insomnium too. Omnium Gatherum has that unique style of lyrics, when they at first glance appear to be really simplistic and written by someone who doesn't know English very well (which is partially true) but are actually pretty poetic and allow for many interpretations.
I know you care about Car Seat Headrest stuff more than random metal bands, so in semi-similar post-rock/alt-rock style to that I can only recommend stuff you probably know- Explosions in the Sky's album Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. Or old classics like Interpol's Turn On the Bright Lights or Silversun Pickup's Carnavas (they also like distorted guitar stuff)
Top 3 songs;
- Famous prophets
- Boxing day
- Ballad of the costa concordia
My favorite song honestly has to be Souls. For the longest time Monomania was really underrated, but I think Souls is the strongest emotional moment of the whole Twin fantasy and monomania narrative, and I honestly kinda prefer monomania to twin fantasy sometimes, even if it is a little less cohesive.
tbh the ballad of the costa concordia is def one of my favs,, 2nd to beach life in death (basic choice ik but. its more popular for a reason!!!)
im on a need to know basis, need to know basis, do you know my bassist, need to know basis, need to know bassist. do you know my bassist, BAWUM BAWUM BAWUM BAWUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, BAWUM BAWUM BAWUM BAWUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
i never knew that the same guy that made carseat headrest made that song i cantttttttttt brooooooooooo
you need to make a video on 1 trait danger, specifically oh actually fr
this might be the thing that gets me into car seat headrest lmfaoooooooooo
@10:36 and @12:40, those are only the lyrics for the original version. The version on Face to Face changed the lyrics to "But if you keep drawing my eyes on your hands and talking to the other, let's pull out the nail with the back of the hammer because this one has grown old and bitter", a reference to Beast Monster Thing from How to Leave Town. (Edit: and you went on to analyze the wrong lyrics lol)
Oh dang haha, I was hoping I had gotten the correct lyrics for that section (since it's really hard to hear everything except "this one has grown old and bitter," and I know certain lines, especially background ones, got changed on a few tracks between MtM and FtF), but the sources I checked all had these. Good catch though!
Off the top of my head, my interpretation of the FtF lines on Bodys would be referencing the disconnect between the two people in the relationship, and how rather than actually communicating, they are simply imagining an idealized version of the other with whom they communicate, that is really just an extension of their own desires (and, to use the imagery of a hand-puppet, literally of their own bodies), relating to the overall "fantasy" of the album. But the singer seems to be recognizing this to some extent here, asking if it might just be better to "pull out the nail" (end their connection) and do the painful, but ultimately healthy thing of breaking up and moving on.
@@CardinalWest it also reminds me of "i could hammer in that nail" and "i could watch that hammer swerve" on famous prophets (stars) :3
there's even more alternating vocals in the mirror to mirror version, which supports the queer perspective theory very well !! :)
you gotta do famous prophets next year
Please do beach life in death next
i’d love to hear you talk about the gun song, there’s so much to say
That's definitely one I'm considering discussing eventually - it's probably my favorite CSH song, and, like you said, there's *so* much to break down.
Sounds like a song made on the fly, tbh XD
>Car Seat Headrest
you a furry?
Yes
Can you do reuse the cel by csh?
i thought u said twink fantasy but both go together so
ending of dramamine when???????????
Hi pls do a 2024 xmas csh special 😿
Now famous prophets (stars) please
the leonard cohen polyphonic lyrics are incorrect. the ones in this video are from the 2011 version. the 2018 one uses updated lyrics.
