For those who have not seen Spring Awakening, in this song, JG's character is singing essentially TO the father at the funeral of his best friend, Moritz, who has committed suicide. This song is a soulful lament of "All the things left behind" by this tragic loss of life. Jonathan here is re-living that moment in the musical. And it's wonderfully done.
Every time I hear this song I can't help but to cry and feel the emotion conveyed through Jonathan. You can see how much Spring Awakening meant for him & the pure, raw emotion behind this song. Truly outstanding and heart wrenchingly beautiful
Perhaps he was remembering what his character was experiencing when the song was performed. In the musical Spring Awakening, Jonathan Groff's character (Melchoir) sings "Left Behind" as a eulogy at his best friend (Moritz's) funeral; each of Moritz's friends lay a flower on his grave while the song is sung. Moritz commits suicide due to the pressures of failing to meet his father/society's standards of success in life, the inevitable punishment of failing to meet the set standards as he failed his school exam, and his fear/regret of not experiencing sex/life.
This man is insanely good at getting into character. When you watch the reenactment of him messing up he sings two or three lines of the song before reenacting the mess up and he literally gets so into character for that like 7 seconds he looks so upset it's insane
Last Saturday, I went to the 92Y to see him in the Lyrics and Lyricists : Rogers and Hammerstein Concert. 40 minutes before the show, I went across the street to get a soda at the deli and there he was. He was so polite and kind. Not arrogant at all !! After the show, I chatted with him for a few minutes. He is the real deal. He is genuinely nice. I wish nothing but the best for him. Just hope after he becomes even a bigger Hollywood star, he won't be too busy to come back for another Broadway show.
Just saw him at the gym. Rock wall. Star struck. Beautiful man. So kind. This is 2022. So talented I heard he didn’t come out until after spring awakening. Must have been difficult. So impressed with him as a talent and a person. Love his voice. ❤️ transforming.
I love how when he finished singing the song, you can tell when he snaps back out of character and is back. like the switch is almost instant its crazy.
A month ago, I saw JG in Hamilton. That man has the total package. Hamilton was awesome. But I have to say, I was impressed by JG's state presence and vocal range and power.
After reading the comments before I expected myself to cry. But no. I'm just deeply amazed by his talent. This is beyond talent, this is wondrous. Wow. I'm almost speechless. And mostly because I cry so easily at sad songs. JG, this is the real talent to make me so amazed to forget my own self for a minute.
His voice just keeps on getting better in time. I love this version way more than the original. All stripped down, just his purê,clear, amazing angelical voice.
I was Georg in Spring Awakening in 2019 and I remember being apart of this song. It was definitely a moment I'll remember. Not to mention the next song 2 minutes after is 'Totally Fked' which has the complete opposite vibe. I remember we were all backstage after this song literally wiping tears away before coming on again for the next upbeat song like nothing had happened hahahaha
Thanks to this video, calling back the beautiful memory watching Jonathan Groff's Spring Awakening in 2007 in NYC. This is my favorite song in the show, so much emotion in it. After all these years, I still touched by Jonathan's singing. He is so sincere and people can sense all the emotion he put through the singing. Still remember he & John Gallagher, Jr. walked to us outside the theater after the show and took the photo with us! They're super friendly and nice!!!
oh my god he genuinely started tearing up. he was remembering the song within the context of the scene, and all the time he spent SA with the cast. NOPE. I am in tears.
I'm not saying he's faking the crying, but as an actor I do have to point out that when watching his face I recognised some face movements that actors can make to force out tears. But a fantastic performance none the less!
Bek Andrews In the book he isn't. On Broadway they've casted people of a buch of different ethnicities but I'm just hoping for a brown Fiyero for the movie. In general I'd like the movie to reference the book slightly more than it did in the staged version. I doubt that'll happen but I can dream right? lol
Kate Lattey he's brown, but he has blue diamond shaped tattoos to signify his status. Another thing i'd love to see in the movie but that's a tall order haha
You fold his hands and smooth his tie You gently lift his chin Were you really so blind And unkind to him? Can't help the itch to touch, to kiss To hold him once again Now to close his eyes Never open them A shadow past, a shadow past Yearning, yearning for the fool It called a home All things he never did Are left behind All the things his mama Wished he'd bear in mind And all his dad had hoped he'd know Oh The talks you never had The Saturdays you never spent All the grown-up places You never went And all of the crying You wouldn't understand You just let him cry Make a man out of him A shadow past, a shadow past Yearning, yearning for the fool It called a home All things he ever wished Are left behind All the things his mama Did to make him mind And how his dad had hoped he'd grow All things he ever lived Are left behind All the fears that ever Flickered through his mind All the sadness that He'd come to own Oh oh oh A shadow past, a shadow past Yearning, yearning for the fool It called a home And whistles through the ghosts Still left behind whistles through the ghosts Still left behind It whistles through the ghosts Still left behind Oh
The fact that he ACTUALLY starts crying breaks my heart.
Same 😥 I love that he’s so openly emotional about things
He’s Jonathan Groff of course he cried
I was laughing about his "greatest fuck up" but somewhere in the middle of the song my laughter became huge sobs wow

Thank you for that information. I haven’t seen it.
beautifully said 👏

Oh gosh, when he actually cries and you can see the tear streak down his face.. So good!
Aw I wonder why he's crying

Old reply but I literally cry whenever I hear this song so i get why lmfao
I love the face at the very end that says "Holy sh*t, I wasn't expecting to get this much into it. Oh well."
i love him sm
Oh god I'm actually crying I can't believe this. Groff's crying and now I am too.

@@AngryPengu he’s more than a Disney star. Disney is lucky to have him. Talent and his ability to memorize info is epic Brilliant.
I can see him crying. You can see the feeling he puts into the song.
He hits those high notes and all is right with the world
I AM IN CLASS. i AM CRYING IN CLASS. THIS MAN
Dylan Thomas Cowart I love your profile pic!
3:10 - "Yearning, YEARning..." just devastating.
I love how the instrumental intro he just shuffled around and took deep breaths to get into character and that truly is an amazing actor
HIS TEARY EYES ARE TOO MUCH FOR MY HEART
Seriously right? I can't deal!
I love how when he finished singing the song, you can tell when he snaps back out of character and is back. like the switch is almost instant its crazy.

Lucky!
Gorgeous performance! But, now that I've seen the revival, it feels incomplete without the signing.
I just the Spring Awakening revival on Broadway. Incredible experience.
Spring awakening is such an underrated show. It has so many emotions and is so touching.
I have lived in Europe Africa in the Middle East and seeing spring awaken, has been my favorite artistic experience ever.

ok. second time. I cried. still so amazed
Love Jonathan Groff so much. I've admired him for so long. Hope to one day meet him in person. He seems incredibly personable.
His voice is so beautiful that I actually feel calm and peaceful for once. My god he is amazing.
His voice just keeps on getting better in time. I love this version way more than the original. All stripped down, just his purê,clear, amazing angelical voice.

this song makes me cry... i love the way he sing this song... I can feel the pain in his voice... i_i
He is so perfect :)
Good job Holden.
You can't act an emotion but you can act an action, which shows a lot about Groff.
This song will always hurt me in so many ways, I think it's because of Deaf West's rendition of it that makes me cry the most
Meghan Robertshaw he did originate the role of Melchior though.
Oh my gosh, Jonathan is perfect *___*
Just beautiful
his voice is so beautiful he makes himself cry
He's soooo incredible! :)
this is one of my therapy songs ❤

HE IS CRYING
I'M CRYING
OUR POOR BABY
MUST PROTEC
i was singing this with the mentality that melchior would have, that my best friend killed theirself and i started crying too.
I'm not saying he's faking the crying, but as an actor I do have to point out that when watching his face I recognised some face movements that actors can make to force out tears. But a fantastic performance none the less!
aw love😥❤
JGroff for Fiyero in the Wicked movie.... fingers xd
+Kate Lattey As much as I love Groff, I'll be kinda pissed if they cast a white Fiyero.
+Chel Ruhh is Fiyero not white? Every version I've seen he is.
Bek Andrews In the book he isn't. On Broadway they've casted people of a buch of different ethnicities but I'm just hoping for a brown Fiyero for the movie. In general I'd like the movie to reference the book slightly more than it did in the staged version. I doubt that'll happen but I can dream right? lol
In the book isn't he blue, or sparkly or something? I never read it (well, I never finished it).
Kate Lattey he's brown, but he has blue diamond shaped tattoos to signify his status. Another thing i'd love to see in the movie but that's a tall order haha
iM NOT CRYING YOU ARE
You fold his hands and smooth his tie
You gently lift his chin
Were you really so blind
And unkind to him?
Can't help the itch to touch, to kiss
To hold him once again
Now to close his eyes
Never open them
A shadow past, a shadow past
Yearning, yearning for the fool
It called a home
All things he never did
Are left behind
All the things his mama
Wished he'd bear in mind
And all his dad had hoped he'd know
Oh
The talks you never had
The Saturdays you never spent
All the grown-up places
You never went
And all of the crying
You wouldn't understand
You just let him cry
Make a man out of him
A shadow past, a shadow past
Yearning, yearning for the fool
It called a home
All things he ever wished
Are left behind
All the things his mama
Did to make him mind
And how his dad had hoped he'd grow
All things he ever lived
Are left behind
All the fears that ever
Flickered through his mind
All the sadness that
He'd come to own
Oh oh oh
A shadow past, a shadow past
Yearning, yearning for the fool
It called a home
And whistles through the ghosts
Still left behind
whistles through the ghosts
Still left behind
It whistles through the ghosts
Still left behind
Oh
I love his voice dose any one else agree
he and lea kinda make the same facial expressions when they sing lol!!!! this is just beautiful, i love him
i would be bawling if i had to sing this scene
OMG HE TEARED UP!!!!
He looks so much like Ansel Elgort in these clips
