  • The Pheasant Tail Nymph is one of the most popular (and effective) pattern in use today. The Quasimodo PT is usually tied on a shorter, curved hook. This is Charlie Craven's recipe found in his influential 2015 work "Tying Nymphs." It's on a standard curved hook, with a bit of pearlescent flash over the body and thorax.
Hook: #8-18 curved nymph or scud
    Thread: Brown
    Tail: Pheasant Tail tips
    Rib: Copper wire, small
    Body: Pheasant Tail fibers
    Thorax: Peacock herl
Shell: Pheasant Tail fibers, with pearlescent tinsel over
    Legs: Pheasant Tail tips
Savage Flies is a project (named after one of my homewaters, the Savage River in Western Maryland, US). I've been trout fishing for many years but have only been tying for the last couple and am learning more every week. If you have any pointers on techniques that would help, I would love to hear them in the comments.
I've been posting new videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:00 pm EST

Thanks Matt , one of my coworkers is starting getting into fly fishing so I’m currently tying him a nice box of essential flies, these will be perfect !

Excellent! I'd definitely put a pheasant tail in any box of essential flies. :-)

Wow for a little guy, there’s quite a bit going on with this one. Makes a great looking fly though. You seemed very relaxed in this video. Great job as usual explaining each step. Another video very well done Matt. Thank you.

Those legs were a good test of my novice skills. Please make the comment about leaving the space behind the bead earlier in the video?

Well sorry about that Leigh! I can't remember how long ago it was I made this video, but hopefully I would do a better job if I did it now. Maybe it is time for another pheasant tail anyway. :-)

This one worked great for me on the cataloochee

That’s cool to hear Chris. I’ve never fished the Cataloochee but I did tie a Cataloochee Copperhead dry fly a while back. 👍

The neck is a horrible finish, should have built up more of a base for the neck...🤪

Without looking, I'd say this video is over three years old. I've made several hundred videos since then so hopefully I've gotten a little better. But thanks for the note.
