What changed?
It was the summer of 2017. I was still in middle school. It was a summer morning as I was gonna go someplace later, but I had about 2 hours of the morning to myself. I had just learned about unity and c# coding, and this video was the one I was about to watch. I remember the peaceful morning and how great it was, as I was watching this video for the first time, with no knowledge of the adventure I was gonna have later in life with my game development journey. Last September, he said his goodbyes and that shook a lot of the game dev community. This is his most popular video, and the video that got me started making games. Man, I remember a recent time where I just sat and reminisced about the good times I had with my game dev journey, and what a privilege it was to grow into one of the best game-making versions of myself it was. Thank you, Asbjorn, for all the great times you gave your community. And to all the beginners out there, hang on, its gonna be one heck of a ride.

Im a 17 yo in America. My entire life I've owned consoles and have never owned a pc due to many reasons. Most being price, the second being access to internet. Soon, I'll be purchasing a Pc and plan on doing so much with it. This tutorial has shined a light and sparked so much inspiration. Thank you, cant wait to get into game development!

There is a poll towards the end on what programming language you would like me to teach - JavaScript or C#. Both languages can be used to make awesome games. JavaScript is considered easier to learn for complete beginners however Unity has shifted heavily towards C# lately (their premade assets, documentation and tutorials is all in C#). C# is my personal favorite but I started in JavaScript so things can quickly change! I will leave the decision to you guys!

*IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!*
Many people have been having errors where if you either play the game and don't touch any controls or if you hit the side on the platform, the player will disappear and the console will throw over 3000 Invalid AABB rkBox errors.
*THE FIX:*
Unity has trouble calculating the hitbox of an object the size of the platform. Instead of the length being 10000, set it to around 2000 or 3000. Voila! No more errors!

@@alyx1aI mean my English is bad so didn't understand how to fix it from that comment. but i fixed it by adding Rigidbody to the "ground" and disable " use gravity " then enable " is kinematic " that's it :D.

I think people have watched some of his videos because they got in this mode where they really wanted to make a game, but then they probably realized it was a lot of work, I don't think he's underrated. I just think people decide this isn't for them.
A good tutorial to get me accustomed to Unity. And I must say, the Unity editor is extraordinarily user friendly.

This is an excellent tutorial. I'm an experienced developer (business apps) learning Unity and have been very frustrated by the extremely poor quality of tutorials out there. This is very clear, simple, and very very practical. Thank you!!!
To anyone who can't see their 3d objects in scene. Look at the top right corner. there should be a drop down for layers. select that and then select "everything" or "default". for some reason I had it on nothing.

If your colours look a lot darker than his in the video: Go to Directional Light, change the colour to a bright white (as its default set at a darker colour) then up the intensity to 2. Hope this helps

There's a really easy way to get the dark version in the free edition, I did it without even firing up Unity for the first time ... I can't work on anything with a light background. Just search for "Unity Dark Theme Free" on TH-cam and you'll find it ;)

Best Unity tutorial series I have seen on youtube! By FAR! Congrats man I subbed. I watched the whole series last night, along with several others. I plan on following through with it this weekend.! I got sick of all the trash games coming out of AAA studios these days. Finally decided to bite the bullet and try and make my own games and hopefully start a company.

@@troy1993 sorry man you will have to download unity 5 from the unity archives to fix that but you will also have to restart the full project because unity hates backward compatibility
Standard assets have not been removed or the asset store, mono develop is just a bad version of visual studio which comes with it now, if you want the asset store just go to the asset store window in the open window menu and standard assets can be purchased for free from the asset store
At least unity did not remove access to older versions... for now

Hello Brackeys, I had a question for you : If I want to start this course do I need to know how to program on C# or are you going to teach us this language through these series. And last of all, I saw your other videos and it seems like you do quite a bit of programming so I wanted to know if you have a series about programming to be able to program like you do.

@@HAbarneyWK I personally knew just a bit of c++ and got the c# basics in just 2 weeks
He does have a tutorial on the basics but I recommend if ur new learn something python first then move to something a bit more complex like c#. His tutorial is called how to program in C# and he uses xamirin studios but because its now old I recommend u use visual studios. Also try to remember c++ , c+ , C and c# are different things. You should probably learn programming fundamentals first before jumping into something like this. There are structured courses on sites such as udemy and edx.org. The language you start with isn’t important. Once you understand programming concepts well enough (which means being able to write your own little programs or solving some problem set questions) then you can jump from one language to another fairly easily.

Can confirm. I messed up a bunch of game controls after blender. Going back to unity after blender is like learning to walk all over again.
@@olaf625 @Mercy Blender and Unity are two different programs dudes. They're meant to work together, but they do different things. In fact, most 3D tools share similar controls for convenience's sake but you should *never* expect any of them to be exactly the same. Especially not when the tools in question are used to do different jobs.

You have to go to Window > Rendering > Lighting settings, then tick the "auto generate lighting" box.
