Thanks! I am a black dude who has no knowledge of guitars. My son wanted his to get new strings. I was able to follow this videos instructions and it made it easier.
Thank you man! You saved my life! My minor e string broke during our rehearsal for tomorrow's performance... but thanks to you I've got a new string on! :D
Just finished re-stringing my grandads old guitar and it's the first time I've ever strung one! Great method broke my first string but that was my fault for not leaving enough slack haha time to go order a new one! Cheers
This worked perfectly...sounds fuggin great man. I used D'Addario light acoustic strings. They have a good stretch and a high resonation. I find the key is to string the way he said, then go back and retune from top E to bottom E.
Thanks for the video! Never heard the ball end being called a grommet before or a string winder being called a string crank -- both very interesting... Always cool to learn new things about the guitar! Very comprehensive tutorial and great camera angles too ;)
Great video! I always wound the string around post and then stick it through the hole! Never could get it nice looking and perfect. Thanks for showing the right way!
The reason your strings broke is because when you tune G, B, and E, you have to turn the knob in the opposite direction in which you did E, A, and D. Also, don't cut the strings right on the knob, leave a little bit of excess string in order to properly tune it.
It worked! MY GOD IT WORKED!!!!!!!! Thanks for the helpful video. I gave my high E string about an inch of slack while tightening and maybe could've used a skosh more, and the bridge pin kept popping out (but I was doing it exactly how you said)... anyway, it just needed some TLC and everything came together nicely. Thanks!
I don't care how good of a musician this guy is or how long he's worked in a music store, you don't clip the excess string off cause it will shock the sound on that particular string when played. A good ear knows the difference.
I learnt to put a fist on the second fret with the string tense over it and through the hole (although you don't have to be super exact). Just make sure to kink the bit that comes out of the hole around the string on the other side so that the string wraps over it. That way it locks and doesn't slip, as you only get about two winds using this method.
i was TRYING to learn how to play a guitar, so i got an acoustic....and then my dad threw a shoe at it when he got mad at my cat and the strings....umm.. WELL this video is very helpful! :)
@LeroyBinson2 I used to have that problem too. Now when I first tune it, I do it slowly, tune it up abit, then leave it for a few minutes, then tune it up a bit more, then leave it for a few minutes and so on and so on. Gives the strngs a chance to stretch and not break
A question I have always had is about traveling with a guitar on a plane. Are there any rules about loosining the tension on the strings because of altitude or pressure?
Thanks for posting this video. Should I look for a different posting if I am unsure about whether to start removing the old strings in a particular order or mounting the new ones in a specific order? I think it's almost like tightening screws on some hardware, you start by placing all the pieces and tighten them in parallel just to be sure there will be no hardship when you start tuning the strings. Of course, steel strings take more tuning than nylons, but that's sheer adjustment. ;-)
thank you soooo much, just needed somebody to show me a couple times. Any advise for this problem...... I play a few tunes in open E and I am always snapping my 3rd string, I get so frustrated I think I will just buy a new guitar and keep it in that tuning. XCrazy huh?
Well, you can choose any string that satisfy your sound expectations but it is good idea to use the strings the same gauge of the old ones.Mostly, light is good for all acoustics. If you want to use another gauge of strings ,you have to adjust the neck.Heavier strings may cause damage to guitar neck..
I got an important question about stretching the strings.... is it able to stretch the high E-string? i'm afraid it's going to break... and what does the string winder usually costs (in Euro's)? PS. Sorry for bad english.
I just bought some Martin and Co. Phosphor bronze LIGHT guitar string pack. Im a beginner and this is my first time replacing it, I know how its done but how the hell do I tell the string correctly? I think I accidentally replaced B with A high E string. PLEASE HELP!
Ok Andy, I have a problem. My salvaged guitar was a steel string one. I bought nylon strings as I always wanted to play a guitar with nylon strings. However, my tuning pins and the pins on the bridge look exactly like your demo here. I watched the other demo you made with nylon strings. Question is - can I mount my nylon strings on this erstwhile steel guitar using the steel string tuning pins or not? If not, everything gets thrown out. If yes, I learn to play it. Its a nice little guitar, and I got it for free, but made the mistake of buying nylon strings. Bummer!
ummmm... what about the guitars that have the tuning pegs built into the head? my pitch keeps slipping on the 1st-3rd string. (E-B-G). It's like as I tighten it, the excess slips backward letting the pitch drop.
what if i wound my strings around a couple times in the right direction but i can't go all the way up to an e without feeling like it will snap. i tried loosening the tuning pegs but it doesn't help. i've done this a million times and ive never run into this problem. what did i do wrong?
For people without thumb strength or a string winder: You can justt use a fork . I used a fork just now to remove my peg/pin/or whatever you wanna call it .
I have a steel-string acoustic guitar - Fender. Can I put any strings on it or do I have to use the ones that are on now. I don't mean changing from steel to nylon I mean the type of the string because it's quite deep sounding. I that because the strings are old or because of the guitar itself. I want it more higher sounding like my other guitar. Can somebody please help?
Pegs popped out of two strings. I watched another tutorial and he said to be sure to push the strings down far enough to lock the balls of the strings under the plate. I must have missed this step on your tutorial.
Thanks! I am a black dude who has no knowledge of guitars. My son wanted his to get new strings. I was able to follow this videos instructions and it made it easier.
I tried to string my sisters guitar before I watched this and I pricked my fingers a lot. I now know how to do this. Thank you so much!!
Is this really the only kind of video like this on youtube without irritating background music? Well done for that!
Many thanks, so clearly demonstrated and explained. Restringing my Tanglewood for the first time ….now with confidence.
and this is the best guitar restringing video lesson i have ever heard thanks...
Thank you for an easy to understand tutorial.
Thank you man! You saved my life! My minor e string broke during our rehearsal for tomorrow's performance... but thanks to you I've got a new string on! :D
Best tutorial on youtube - thanks!

Thanks for this video, buddy. Worked like a charm for me! Now my guitar sounds amazing! love that new sting sound!
Great video! I always wound the string around post and then stick it through the hole! Never could get it nice looking and perfect. Thanks for showing the right way!
the trick with pre-stretching the strings is awsome! My guitar was in tune immediatly as if I never changed the strings!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Several main points you shared, it's only now that I came to know. GOD Bless you, Sir.
Sweet, first step towards guitar proficiency attained. Thanks!
i love you man, restrung all my strings and it sounds great now thanks to you!
Re-stringed it perfectly and now it snapped while I tuned it. Even after stretching. Thanks.
it said for dummies
Maybe your guitar has a sharp point in the tuning machines, bridge or nut
Cheap strings

One of the Best how-tos one TH-cam
I can't believe I actually did it... thanks so much for this helpful video... your awesome !
I tried this... My guitar string broke and so did my flesh
Jaime Diaz just happened to me. I tuned it too tight and pop. The end of the string poked my thumb.
Thank you so much for the clear tutorial.

Thanks for the quick and easy to follow video!!
Thanks man, helped me, and i strung my guitar for the first time ever
Thanks for such an excellent demonstration. I'm completely new to guitars and I have a lot to learn. Now I'm on the right path.
The only reason I looked for a video on this is to figure out how much slack to leave... "you'll develop a knack for it" wasn't too helpful
a random user I have the exact same problem :/ Have you found a solution yet?
Lol, some things can only learned via first-hand experience

Very helpful! thank you so much 💐
what a great video! liked and subscribed!
i was TRYING to learn how to play a guitar, so i got an acoustic....and then my dad threw a shoe at it when he got mad at my cat and the strings....umm.. WELL this video is very helpful! :)
Gee that was easier that what a couple of luthiers showed me... thanks!
Excellent and very helpful. Thank you!
I thought something was wrong with my guitar it sounded horrible! So I threw it away and bought a new one!;-)
Thanks man, you have my sincere gratitude.
yay ! thank you ! this vid is awesomeesomesss. :D unlike other vids that are frigging long but doesn't really teach me anything.
What a great video. Thank you!
Been playing for about 19 years and restringing still makes me nervous as hell! I'm so clumsy so I always try to put it off as long as I can.
thankyou that was easy to understand and helpful
Thank you this was so helpful... Now I have to see if I can do it!
Thank you very much! Excellent video
I don’t need this but I watch this
I thought stringing a guitar was hard but this video was so simple that my 3 year old sister could do it
We take off the old string? So the fact that I've been overlaying my strings is bad?!
That's why no one else has a 42 string guitar!
Lmfao
This actually helped, now I just gotta try it myself..
@LeroyBinson2 I used to have that problem too. Now when I first tune it, I do it slowly, tune it up abit, then leave it for a few minutes, then tune it up a bit more, then leave it for a few minutes and so on and so on. Gives the strngs a chance to stretch and not break
Amazing teacher!
A question I have always had is about traveling with a guitar on a plane. Are there any rules about loosining the tension on the strings because of altitude or pressure?
I seemed to have run over my guitar in the process, how does one troubleshoot this?
Run it over a second time, it'll fix itself.
this was incredibly helpful thank you so much!
Thanks helped me a lot
THANK YOU. I tried transposing my guitar last night and broke a string. Luckily I had a string winder and an extra string, haha.
thanks it helped a lot

The problem I have with re-stringing my guitar is that I always snap the high E string when tightening it. Any ideas on how to avoid it?
excelen excelente video man!!!!!!
Very helpful! Thank you :)
@CrazyClownMilitia U didn't leave any slack for the string! Also when u put the string on play it, to make sure it's not to tight
great video, nice and simple. thanks a lot :)
Good tutorial . I used a spoon to pull out the strings, you don't need the ranch
I got an important question about stretching the strings.... is it able to stretch the high E-string? i'm afraid it's going to break... and what does the string winder usually costs (in Euro's)?
PS. Sorry for bad english.
Thank you! very helpful xxx
What happens IF the metal piece is down under the pedge and the string broke? Can you get up the metal piece
Thank you it helps a lot 😄
good video dude
So simple, thanks. x
I thought you had to wind the string once below where it enters the post and once above it enters the post.
Great vid, thanks

MJ Remy no, idiot, steel string for steel string, the guitar was engineered for the amount of tension it needs for type of strings
Thanks, very helpful!
@100elementos a steel string guitar's neck is generally thinner than a nylon string guitar.
So glad Wallace and Grommet is English. Otherwise i'd have to hear "Grammeht get yer hands owf o' that cheeze"
ummmm... what about the guitars that have the tuning pegs built into the head? my pitch keeps slipping on the 1st-3rd string. (E-B-G). It's like as I tighten it, the excess slips backward letting the pitch drop.
@soundmethod :
I suggest one by one , to keep tension on the guitar.
Do you suggest doing one string at a time or is there harm in taking off all of the old strings at once?
what if i wound my strings around a couple times in the right direction but i can't go all the way up to an e without feeling like it will snap. i tried loosening the tuning pegs but it doesn't help. i've done this a million times and ive never run into this problem. what did i do wrong?
Very helpful
wow. thank you so much:)
For people without thumb strength or a string winder: You can justt use a fork . I used a fork just now to remove my peg/pin/or whatever you wanna call it .
it seems so much easier than stringing a classical guitar
can you put steel strings on a classical guitar(guitar with nylon strings)?
piece of cake thanks to this vid :D
Very helpful thanx :)
I`m so scared of stringing my guitar that I do it with sunglasses and gloves on! :D
very nice!!!...
excellent /perfect
I watch this everytime when one of my strings snap, just for safety ;D
Thank you!

Excellent video if you cant follow tgat then take it to your local shop..
Pegs popped out of two strings. I watched another tutorial and he said to be sure to push the strings down far enough to lock the balls of the strings under the plate. I must have missed this step on your tutorial.
