Wow, that MiG-21 boss fight, one of the most beautiful dances of death I've seen in DCS. That Fishbed driver was GOOD. Kind of poetic that it ended in a tie like that.
Really appreciate you showing the controls diagram! I like being able to see just how much you are pulling in certain turns and manuevers. Great video!
MIG-21 was nice, rare species that didnt stalled the plane in the first turn in to the ground, great fight
What a beautiful 2-ship landing to end on!
Great vid as always , what a fantastic KD. Those nice slow mig-21 vs f-5 fights vs someone good were what I loved the most about ECW. I’d get so mad when a third party (friendly or enemy)would come along and ruin the dance after a couple of good minutes at it.
My gut instinct is to fight this a bit differently to you though. I used to fight the same. My feeling now is to put that axis plane running from your gunsight to your lift vector in lag, so maybe 5 or so jet lengths behind him. If you look at the video you always put yours 5 jet lengths or so in front because normally that will give you a nice high deflection shot against a lesser opponent. But by having your nose lag in the spiral you have more distance to cover as you move forward along the centre axle of the spiral and you’ll remain in that initial control zone you had at the beginning. After that it comes down to throttle play which you’re quite good at.
I might be wrong but after much trial, error and consideration that’s where my understanding of that particular scenario is currently (bfm understanding seems to evolve the more I play and eventually someone more experienced comes along to rock my core gameplans).
Yeah, you’re absolutely right and that’s what I was trying to give myself the space to get into a regime of, but because I blew it early hoping he’d be worse than he was I got trapped feeling that he’d have an angle if I let it loosen up - he accelerates better and we were often trading altitude for energy to keep the radius down.
If I hadn’t been so low on fuel he would’ve probably got me, was actually surprised how well the Tiger was performing for me in their verticals.
Great vid as always man
Really cool epic dogfighting with that 21!
We were on the server the same day I think, I was playing with Toastman in the 15s chasing the bombers. I also was the "attention paying bastard" ( 😅 ) in the Mig later. This must have been like 2 weeks ago iirc.
Yeah it was a while back now, been posting a video a week - there are still 2 more parts to go.
Yeah that was a very nice fight vs the 21 - Makes me want to get back into the F5 again, it really does have a high skill ceiling 👌
I absolutely love it, currently eyeing up the FFBeast pre-order mainly just to enhance the joy of flying the F-5 in particular.
Brilliant flying mate. Will be joining you shortly, hope you like greenhorns 😅
You’ll be warmly welcomed, but “Greenhorns”?

Ah, makes sense - not heard that one before
That guy was good.
Nice dance with the mig xD
Havent flown in a few months, but I always feel Im awful on every airplane. How long did it take you to "get it" in the F-5?
Hard to say, I’d set myself little challenges to complete and then just mess around with stuff.
Stuff like holding the first detent through manoeuvres until I could do it constantly without it causing me to miss shots or change my grip on the stick.
Or religiously forcing myself to switch the flaps between up and auto depending on whether I want speed or turn rate, it makes a world of difference to energy conservation.
Then I’d test my proficiency by letting situations develop out of my favour and try to turn them around; flying with a wingman helps in case you fuck up, saves some of the frustration of having to start from the ground all over again.
Binding all the weapon panel to easy keyboard/HOTAS keys helped a lot too, you want to be heads up as much as possible.
The hardest part was learning how much is too much when it comes to pulling back on the stick, I used to really struggle to keep it fast because I’d treat it like the MiG-19 which I died in a lot because I wasn’t pulling enough, got to be pretty gentle with the F-5 until you get the upper hand.
I used to back off the throttle a lot too, worried about fuel consumption in burner so I’d avoid using it; but if you use it a lot and maintain a higher average speed overall, it’s easier to stay fast when you’re fast already; the F-5’s engines spool up really slow and burner doesn’t even give you much extra to work with so I’ll pretty much burn to a medium alt and then cruise on 70% throttle, then once I’m engaged I’ll only let off the burner when I’m diving or to force an overshoot as part of a rolling scissor.
You can cover a lot of ground on very little fuel, like 100 miles on 200lbs or so per engine, so you only need to save enough to get you up to 20k because then you can sit near idle and plod for miles.
Once you’re behind something they’ll really struggle to shake you off though because when getting slow isn’t going to put you at risk, it’s very controllable at low speed, like a baby F-18.
Best way to learn is to fly everything else as well though, no better way to know what your enemy can do if you’ve been in their shoes.
Maybe I should make a video covering all this once people have started missing the F-5 again… Feels like I’ve covered it more than anything else and the views suggest people are sick of it now 😅
