    sorry wrong info you should have cut the tip long time ago it will absolutely not form any more banana;s then the already formed fruit will start sooner to mature into thicker ones and ripen much sooner

    Leaving the hearth does not add more hands to a bunch, rather it should be cut because it deprives the nutrients needed for fruit development and delays fruit maturity. The trunk of the mother tree should be left standing and not cut all the way down it will be the source of water and nutrition for the next suckers for them grow and bloom sooner.

    Those won't grow more even if you left the flower on, it's done.

    Once the plant makes only female flowers (the small one you were pointing at) you can chop the rest off. It just takes nutrients away from the developing bananas. You should've cut 2 feet off that plant months ago.

      when it only makes male* flowers. female flowers make fruit and males do nothing. I'd cut the main flower and use it for culinary purposes. after you start to see the flowers fall off with no small fruit forming then it will produce no more fruit. he says that each section would produce down the whole thing which as you know is untrue.

    Glad you told me about the heart. Mine has a heart here in United States in Virginia and now some little flowers are coming out which I guess will be bananas!

  • @AdrianJNyaoi
    @AdrianJNyaoi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    no no, you would not get more hands sprouting from the tail end once the last one set. cutting the heart off does not prevent more banana hand to grow, it had already set. infact that one should be removed, it does not contribute any thing to the plant.

    good video, however one small thing. the plant produces female flowers first and those become bananas. after that it produces male flowers that will not produce any fruit. so after hands are no longer forming you are able to cut the heart off so it can focus on the fruit. otherwise good video on harvesting. I have my own plants and cant wait to do my own harvesting.

      @@strandedinpr Africa is a huge continent made up of many different countries some of which have Islands the size of Puerto Rico.
      The equator goes right across the center of Africa so the parts at the most extreme are not as hot as the parts are towards the center. But there are also some very high mountains in Africa so you can have in the same area down on the low land area is very hot weather of 100 degrees and then go up the mountain and have actual ice and snow

    We are new to growning bananas but bought a place that has some.
    We finally got some growing to our surprise and after 3 months cut the flower off because it is said that it will give more nutrience to the banana.
    How long after does it take before harvesting?

    • @Niknteen1
      @Niknteen1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fruit wont have sharp looking edges, they will begin to round off.. then you can cut the bunch, tie a loop at the top end and hang it in a shaded/cool spot, or leave them until they begin to turn colour.. :)

  • @FtLMale1
    @FtLMale1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great Video, Very Helpful! Okay, I cut the bananas free when the fruit is rounded and no longer has sharp edges... but do you cut off the bottom pod, or does it just fall off when it ends its cycle?

    • @strandedinpr
      @strandedinpr  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Ruffner it's called the heart, if you don't cut the heart more bananas grow.. When you are happy with the amount of bananas, cut the heart( the bottom pod) and that's when the plant starts really focuses on growing the bananas bigger and faster

      They will not ripen on the tree harvest when they get roundish

    • @jacintopradojr4759
      @jacintopradojr4759 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      U should prop up or support the weight of the bunch with a bamboo pole or anything long enough. The fruit will ripen and turn yellow on the trunk but harvesting that way would be too late bcoz everything will ripen within 4 to 5 days u might not consume all of it b4 it rots. Better to harvest while it is green coz the ripening process takes a week or two.

  • @sethbingo
    @sethbingo 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the mother tree die ounce you cut it? Also if you dont cut it,couldnt you separate the mother and baby plant from eachother then they can both have fruit?

    • @strandedinpr
      @strandedinpr  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      minecraftpartzy neg. once you cut the bananas, you must kill the mother plant otherwise the younger plants will not produce bananas

    • @jacintopradojr4759
      @jacintopradojr4759 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bananas will not bloom a second time, u can leave the mother plant standing after harvest it will be the source of water and nutrients for the next suckers. The mother will dry up and rot on its own. It is advisable to maintain only two or three suckers at the most leaving more would result in smaller bunches and fruits. Leave the biggest & the 2 next suckers, dig out and separate the rest, replant them if u have more space.

      strandedinpr The banana at first produces female flowers that turn into bananas fruits. Then they produce male flowers which produce the little marks where the purple bracts attach.. above the banana pod(bloom) which holds the male flowers. Its not the heart....many people cut it off when the male flowers begin many people leave it.. I don't think it will let me post a direct link, but its called "Banana Blood and the Banana Flower "POD", when to remove it" on my channel.
