  • Sitting in the middle of a woodland not far from the world heritage site of Saltaire, lay the ruins of a house once home to a very prominent, local figure.
It's been over 150 years since that family first moved in, but their legacy in the local area continues and not only that, the ruins of their grand home are still there including a very dark kitchen basement...

The Drawing Room derives, as I understand it, from Withdrawing Room where the owner of the house, his wife or guests could withdraw from the main hall or dining area for more privacy or entertainment perhaps after a meal.

15:15 Not at all a stupid question. A drawing room is basically the old verson of a second living room, which a guest or owner could 'withdraw' . For instance, after a formal dinner women would go there while the men retreated to the smoking room :)

Watching you in the cellar, it makes me think of my Grandmothers stories she told me about her and in Salford when the Germans were bombing the area. Im born and raised in the U.S. so I’m not sure exactly where you are in relation. She said was in charge of babysitting a small group of neighborhood children ages about 4-10 years old. She was 13. She said they had to all stay down in the cellars when the bombing started. The earth shaking was the scariest part, and hearing the explosions near by was terrifying. She said it was basically a coal cellar and the hardest part for being “little English girls” was keeping their dresses or clothes clean from the coal all over the cellar. She said it was so funny, the little girls that were there with her were all sitting on their hands trying their best not to get coal on their clothes 😂. Bombs falling all around them, possible death looming and they’re worried about dirtying up there clothes 😂🙈. She always told it in a fun way, and she laughed each time she told it, but I bet it had to be a truly terrifying experience. Sorry for rambling, just reminded me of her in the cellar. Great video! Fascinating stuff. Enjoyed it. 😎🤘🏻

I've not managed to find anything about the staff but that would be interesting to know. Someone else mentioned the use of arsenic in some wallpapers in victorian times which I never knew about!
The records do also say one of the reasons the house struggled to sell was because of damp and difficulty getting it heated. Maybe not one direct cause, but possibly didn't help anyone who was struggling with sickness.

This was a great tour of the area. I share your arachnophobia! The scullery is like a kitchen used for washing dishes and clothes. A drawing room used to be called a withdrawing room where people would go to after dinner and have their port and cigars! A room for every function in the days before TV. Your style of narration is infectious and fun. I don’t think that there’s anything mysterious about the deaths in the other families. It’s sometimes sobering to remember that antibiotics were not readily available and disease was rife even among the wealthiest. The climate and area around the house is damp and this could have contributed to their deaths. Keep up with your local research and videos, they are so interesting 😊

You ought to watch Downton Abbey if you wish to fully appreciate such a grand country home. While the scullery wasn't featured prominently in the series, I recall a great many scenes playing out in the drawing room once the family would "go through" after dinner, sometimes the men would "go through" to the library, while the women "went through" to the drawing room, but more often than not, the family would withdraw together, allowing the staff to do their post dinner tidying in the dining room.
