The the clokc ticking and the piano. I don't know why, but the piano just feels like a very nostalgic instrument. Might be because of it's age and how it was widely utilized during the classical period with figures like Mozart and Beethoven bringing it to the publics focus. It's been used for way way more years than for example the base, the electrical guitar or modern drums. Also ticking feels nostalgic because the passing of time + the fact that we've all grown up keeping track of time through clocks, but that's self-explanatory.
I thought myself crazy at first when I felt like if I left this place, I'd be leaving something dreadfully important behind. I kept coming back to this map instead of progressing the story later on just to talk to the shadows and listen to the music, and sit in the atmosphere of the map. Soken is truly a mastermind when it comes to telling a story and implanting reason through music, this map and Elpis both hold so many precious moments and I hate it like we're the Ancients who cry for their lost home!
I love how much this game has made me want to cry. Haurchefant, Ysayle, Minfillia, the helplessness of Ardbert when he tried to protect the crystarium soldiers, and now Emet-Selch... I think Emet's been the one to tear at me the worst. He just wanted to save his family. He wanted his home back. If I were in the same position, I would've done the same. I wish there was some way he could've done so without causing so much suffering. Some way this could've ended without him at the receiving end of that axe. But that's probably why it's the saddest part so far for me. Because I knew his motives weren't inherently evil and yet I didn't have a choice but to end him. He didn't deserve it. Any of it. Dying or living an eternity wishing for his loved ones back. And then his last words. Those damn last words.. instead of hating us for stopping him, he entrusts to us his memory? The memory of him and all of those he had been working so hard to get back. Instead of dying in spite and hatred, he looks to us, knowing there's no more he can do, and trusts us. Gah, I'm sorry, I'm rambling at this point. My heart just hurts so much rn, lol. I will forever love this music and the character that let us roam in such a beautiful, lonely city.
I keep coming back to this music and this map, not just Elpis, but I totally agree with everything. He's just one of those character you wish could have had everything return to him. They did brilliantly with the development of his character, and I always thought it painful that we couldn't do anything for the Ancients. That's how the story goes, and I'm sure they wanted the players to feel their sorrow and see their side of the need and despair to have everything back to normal. And with Emet-Selch case, the burden he carried around for so long, it honestly haunts me to this day that we can't have him and Hythlodaeus join us as Ardbert did on the First. But it's true that this is only the start, and they're all now sleeping in the lifestream. So who knows what the future will bring. But for the love of god, did they have to make us love them so much that now we're like the Ancients who wish to have everything back? I feel like they had an evil scheme with that.
@@OnibiTeru EW annoyed me so much with its treatment of the ancient storyline, but at least they walked it back a bit via the 6.1 Q&A and the Omega quest... I still feel most sad about Emet and what was done to his people and their star. Very much agree with your last paragraph... that is how I feel.
You could argue that Emet Selch's motive was the exact same as your's, only difference being he's saving what WAS, instead of you, who's saving was IS, and because of that Emet Selch *had* to die, he wouldn't have had it any other way, he was just like you, willing to stop at nothing to save his own kind, and with that, I think Emet Selch really does define was a morally grey character/villain is, yes he wants to essentially kill a bunch of innocents, but what different would it be to him than what happened with his brothers from Hydaelyn? And his death only solidified his position as a top tier villain, he realized that even in a fractured state, being only a piece of the true power of what you were, you managed to best him, and for that, he deemed you worthy of continuing, and worthy of "remembering us"
I always find myself coming back here and sitting on top of the taller buildings, just looking out at Amaurot, listening to the music, the ticking clock. Oddly relaxing...
The general vibe of the place (music + atmosphere + context) really feels like one of the most Final Fantasy moments in the series so far. You know, that moment when you arrive to that one advanced (sometimes extinguished) civilization in many games of the series.

@@IngeniousNinja FINALLY! I thought of those too! I loved their voices and I love the Ancients' voices too.
