Thank you so much for in depth tips and techniques. Just what I was searching for. I have been using the back basting method, but from your tutorial I understand it so much better. You rock!
+Debbie Horton Thanks Debbie! I don't have a video on back basting but there is a photo tutorial on by web site. I hope it helps. I love back basting! sentimentalstitches.net/instructions/hand-applique/back-basting-tutorial-for-hand-applique/
WOW! You have totally revolutionized the way I do needle turn applique! I'm working on a Talaveras Tile Quilt, which is nothing but curves! I already did the back basting method, and drew a line with chalk for my stitching, but when I clip every 1/4" around the edge I am getting fantastic results and going even faster!! I don't need to use a toothpick all the time to grab onto the fabric to turn it!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!
The back basting method you show in this video is truly a game changer for me. For whatever reason, maybe the appliqes is more stable, it works perfectly. My edges are smooth and manipulating the needle is much easier than the starch, glue template method of have previously used. Thank you!
Hi. Thanks so much for all the great info! I don't quilt much, but I do a lot of mixed technique work, including appliques, and I admit I often shoot in the dark. (giggles) I'm not sure, however, what you meant about the freezer paper transfers. Can you explain, please? I also couldn't see the fancy knot you used too well. Is there a diagram somewhere that you know of? Thanks!
Thank you very much for that detailed tutorial. I'm new to quilting so I do have a question, after you applique your piece onto you background fabric do you then cut away the excess background fabric directly behind the applique. I've seen several tutorials, love yours the best but no one has explained that little tidbit. Thanks, Yolanda
I am working on a map,of the USA for my classroom and this is my very first time doing this so if my question seems silly, I'm sorry. So I have drawn all the states on the freezer paper. Do I need to cut out each one to its exact shape before ironing them to the fabric?
Nice to have detailed tools etc. my only comment is to list all the tools in the text below the video. It’s hard for me to remember o unless it’s in print.
Hi Gay Bomers I'm a textile student and I'm wondering what size are your Elan scissors? Are they 4" or 5"? thankyou so much for sharing your equipment recommendation as well as the tutorial. Cheers, Miela
+Miela Malyon My Elan scissors are the straight blade 5" scissors. (Embroidery Scissor 5" E6 Elan) If you aren't able to find the Elan scissors, I also use Havel's 5 1/2" applique and embroidery scissors. I discovered them after the video was filmed. They're great too! sentimentalstitches.myshopify.com/products/applique-and-embroidery-scissors
I love the look of hand applique over the zigzag machine applique. Great video! Thanks!
Just love how you went over all the products and added tips.
