If you're reading this, then you've taken the time to watch my work. My deepest gratitude for you, but if you'd like to take just one small extra step and leave a like, my gratitude will be all the deeper. Thanks for spending a little bit of your time with me and listening to my thoughts.
I really liked this! It's insightful, critical, and incisive. You've really put a lot of through into how we engage with games, how the way we engage with a game changes over time, and how the medium's standards evolve. Really appreciated the insight!
Thanks for making a good game. Clearly you put a lot of care into this game, and so much of it worked really well. That care is a lot rarer than people realize too. I've seen so many games that are just uninspired rushed messes. These situations where clearly game development isn't something that clicks with that person. You, however, see a lot of the little details that make things work and i think that though my take on this game was a little mixed, it would not surprise me to see you or a group you're in create something top tier. I'd guess you've been doing this awhile, and I encourage you to keep up the good work. Good luck in your endeavors.
Thanks! I haven't been doing this that long, Ocean's Heart is my first game, so I definitely know I've still got a lot to learn. Which is why really thoughtful critique like yours is very helpful! Great points to carry forward as I iterate and (hopefully) improve. Thanks for taking the time to give such a well-reasoned and critical analysis, of my game and of how we think about games, it's entertaining and educational : )
Thanks for watching. I don't always review games this way, but it seemed to be necessary to preface my thoughts. I did a similar thing for a game called Cloud Gardens where I talked briefly about what a game is. You may enjoy that review as well (even if the game isn't your thing)
I totally agree! Rose coloured glasses.. i cant stand when on all these top ten games-lists theres always a fame from yesteryear thats clearly there only for nostalgia.. lol like we havent moved passed that bar. Please.
Hard to say exactly. I played for 5 hours and felt like I was just scratching the surface. My guess is fairly long 20+ hours likely. Possibly higher than that.
I don't even think the Celeste devs themselves would say their game is better than Super Mario Bros. It's like claiming Avatar is better than Citizen Kane.
It was a stretch of a comparison for sure, but imagine someone reaches back in time and hands a kid both games in 1985 (or so). Can you really say SMB will be the preferred game? The platforming mechanics in Celeste are really good.
@@pixel0 I wouldn't be at all surprised if the 1985 kid picked SMB over Celeste though. _Or even if a 2021 kid did the same._ There's a reason Nintendo's game is a classic and that's because it's still a ton of fun to play. A few years ago I had my nephew try some original 1995 Doom on my PC, and despite him being used to modern day FPSes, I had to pry him away from the keyboard when it was time to quit. Games like SMB or Doom are classics _because_ they still to-this-day play wonderfully.

What a great review and a very interesting take on how nostalgia and older game design works. Thoroughly enjoyed the video!!

Nice review! I heard there are some issues with stuttering, and it playing not as smooth as it should sometimes. Did you encounter this problem?
I had no performance issues at all. A couple small graphical issues where a transparent sprite showed white, but that was it.
How long?
