So glad to see you trying TMM! I am doing it with my 6 year old and would love to see a video of how you guys are doing it if you don’t mind videoing it! The Math Map is so unique it’s useful to see how everyone is implementing it.
Haha it is so frustrating at times! Especially with younger kids and not having learned any of this myself. I don’t know if you watched any of the book clubs with the creators of the curriculum but they basically insist that if the 4 pages are to much to customize it to your family. They’ve given all types of examples like just focusing on the one type of problem and then you can do that on the following pages since they repeat the same information etc. My plan is if it becomes to much to focus on one page and the pages that match in the other days and then possibly go back through it again since we school year round. The flash cards are awesome too if you have them! Looking forward to any updates!
I don't know anything about the structure and rhythm of CC, but do you think it would be doable to have the boys complete 1 math sheet (front and back) each day? That way you don't have to give up on it completely. Or is it a situation where you would be expected to keep to a schedule and get through the pages in a set amount of time? My oldest child is almost 7 and we recently started Math Mammoth grade 2 Canadian Edition and its going really well. It looks a bit similar in ways to Math Map minus all of the advanced terminology, of course. We also have introduced spelling with the use of the Original Mcguffey Pictorial Primer. I ask her to orally spell out words as they come up in the lessons, have her write out the words, do copywork for 1-2 sentences and the next day I'll dictate those sentences to her or just the words I know she needs to work on - depends on the day. We're using Sherry Hayes' Lesson Book for that so it takes around 3-4 days to complete each lesson. My almost 4 year old has requested to have her own McGuffey so I just gave her the Original Primer and she's been reading a few of the words at the beginning. She knows her letter sounds and has recently been blending 3 letter words so it was perfect timing for her to ask for her own book. Like your oldest, my daughter is also an advanced reader. She was reading "the cat sat on the mat" type sentences when she was 2.5 years - like actually sounding out each word; not memorizing words other than sight words. My other children are almost 4 and almost 2 so quite close to your boys! I can definitely relate when you say its challenging to get through worksheets due to the toddler scribbling on them and wanting attention. Something we also do is occasionally use Wentworth's Primary Arithmetic like you would with Ray's - completely oral. That gets her brain working those easier equations that inevitably help her to complete the double digit equations in Math Mammoth grade 2. I love Ray's, but sometimes children pick up on the patterns so it can be good to switch it up. I found myself reading out the problems in different orders to keep it fresh. Anyway, I pray that you'll figure this all out soon so you don't have to rack your brain and feel like math is so up in the air. I feel like my entire homeschooling journey has been up in the air haha. I hope this rhythm we're on now will stick at least for this year. We year 'round homeschool though so I say "year" loosely as I'm sure you do as well.
@@elizabethstephens7865 it’s definitely been a rocky journey for us this year. But, God-willing, we’re starting to figure things out. We’ve actually switched to Life of Fred for math. And we’re loving it. 🥳🤪🤓
