You are one of my fave booktubers! We actually have quite different tastes but I love hearing your opinion and descriptions of books. You introduce me to stuff I probably wouldn’t have thought about reading :)

I like the Hours movie but remember loving the book for its writing alone - it was so gorgeous. I have this paperback edition that looks like a close up of a Pre-Raphaelite painting or something with just a hand held up as if surrendering. I prefer that cover to the movie one or the other one you showed. Loved the Morrison talk too!

How odd, at this very moment I have Ovid's book on my night stand, I am about 1/3 of the way through. It is one of the old black and white cover Penguins, can't tell you the translator but will definitely make a note of it. I really am enjoying it. This is my first read through so I realize I have a bunch left to glean however..... onward and upward, I am ready to read it again with a different POV.
Hope you are well and your new job is satisfying and FUN!

I’m inspired to finally begin reading Toni Morrison. At the very least Beloved. Love your reading catch ups. So diverse. It expands my mind every time 👍🤓

Thank you! And that's awesome that you're starting Morrison!

Always nice to hear your views , Ben! I’m impressed to hear of an underwhelming Morrison work (I recently read her “The Bluest Eye,” excellent and provocative).
I’ve been reading Zola’s “Nana,” from his meta-anthropological series on France-I’m wanting to shore up my Belle Epoque knowledge for writing my own story!

I haven't read Virginia Woolf yet, but I'm planning to read both The Waves (because of you) and To the Lighthouse (a good friend's rec) this summer. Maybe next year I'll get to Mrs Dalloway and The Hours. I loved the movie, but haven't seen it in years... I don't remember anything about the scenes showed here. 😅 I should watch it again.

    • @somebenfen

The Waves is amazing but very dense! And I'd definitely recommend the hours!

This Ovid translation seems right up my alley. I read the David Raeburn translation in college and really enjoyed it, but that was so long ago I couldn't remember the gendered/violence aspects of the translation. Good luck with the Count! I read it last year and also had to take a multi-month break from it 🙃

I have a feeling we'll be chasing The Overstory feels for the rest of our lives. lol "the hours" poster is so iconic I just look at it and hear an announcer say "And the best Oscar for Hair & Makeup goes to..." Glorious hilarious lovely video as always Ben! I'll be here to listen to you talk about books whether it's none or infinity 🙆🏻‍♀

I'm 400ish pages into the Count of Monte Cristo, reading one or two chapters at a time. I would like to read The Hours and Mrs Dalloway, maybe I'll add that to my 2023 goals.

    • @somebenfen
      @somebenfen  ปีที่แล้ว

That's probably a good way to do it, slowly but surely. Def read Mrs Dalloway!

I felt very similarly about Tar Baby. AJ and I are reading her fiction in publication order. I’m looking forward to Beloved next.
I read The Hours and Mrs. Dalloway together earlier this year. It’s been so long since I’ve seen the movie so couldn’t really compare. I have the same movie cover. 😊💙

I’ve felt like a “bad person” for years for not liking Tar Baby. It’s good to know that someone else feels the same way! Also, so glad you brought up The Hours. That book got me started on Ms. Woolf, also. Thanks!

I’ve been hanging back on reading Tar Baby - the only one of her first six that I haven’t read. Like you I love Beloved and Song of Solomon and I do want to read all of her books but I’m not looking forward to it now!
