The value of the phones are not supposed to be current value. You buy a car and use it for 1 year, will you sell it at the value of current year when there are new models. Please revisit this case
With all due respect, I disagree with you Busola for the following reasons. The judge did not award the plaintiff the value of new phones. She has not even taken into consideration the inconvenience of time spent without the use of her phones. She has not considered inflation. I realise justice Funmi does not attend to these technicalities. She tries not to complicate and agravate the issues further. Her objective is just to help the parties reach amicable settlement. In that regard, I am of the opinion that the judgment was fair to both parties, especially as the repayment schedule is an agreement between both parties. Kudos to you judge Funmi. May God continue to inspire you.
Wow. In the US the show actually pays 5,000 usd and the plaintiff and the defendant split whatever is left after there is an award given to the plaintiff. For example, if the plantiff wins 1500 US dollars there's 3,500 US dollars left in the pot and the two of them split the remaining difference
For someone who works around Festac, security should be paramount in your mind. To put the customers stuffs entrusted in your care in that place under a canopy leaves much to be desired. I am not particularly moved by the defendants story line which i believe Judge Funmi should try and explore more to make the case more fascinating. She appears easily swayed by their responses.
Who would take a brand new phone for repairs? She used it. But she bought it new. The Samsung. The other one phone was the one she bought as an already used phone!!

The judgment was not well done, the screen of one of the phone was broken,so that should be deducted from face value. More so there is something we call depreciation value of good.You don’t calculate from the market value rather you depreciation the value.
I get your point but remember that, in such business you are liable to replace any missing clients item when it gets loss or stolen. If you insure an item and it get loss or stolen, it is replace with the market value not the state of the item, that's why people insure their goods, so it can be replace to the new state when it gets loss or stolen. Hopefully the country govt. would inact a law that would help the people with insurance companies because if the dude items were insured, the insurance company would be the one sorting her out and also replacing the dude stolen equipment but the insurance system is not friendly to an ordinary citizen.

The lesson there is never do business with sentiments, treat everyone like stranger so at any point you will always be vindicated. I think the Judge should have depreciated the Samsung phone by a year, since the defendant had used it atleast for a year, was in need of repairs and it was not brand new in the first place. my thoughts sha! N150,000 would have been a fair amount.
And the lady said she bought the used infinix 30k and she has used it for a year. The 2nd phone should have been 15k since he is refunding the money for repairs. Like wise the Samsung too.

The judge did not award 12,000 against the defendant, watch the case again. Secondly at 8.05 minutes into the case the judge stated that she found out the current price of the phones. She usually refer to statements submitted to the court to complain and the response filed in court apparently she already made her research that's why she could say she found out the current price of the phones. I recommend you watch all over again so as not to mislead people with your comments. You obviously didn't state the correct position of what transpired. Just watch again.

Setemi, I don't think she was. I believe when Judge Funmi said this is the current price of the fairly used, she has considered all the phone issues with it. Maybe it would have been clearer if Judge Funmi says, "this is the current value of a fairly used BROKEN screen Samsung Note 9", or "this is the current value of a fairly used UNFLASHED infinix S5". Remember the guy said broken screen and flashing are the repairs he's supposed to do. Since there is no way the guy can prove that he had completed the repair before his storage was burgled, then he must return the repair cost. It may even be better for him not to prove it because the 12k repair cost may save him from values that an unbroken screen Samsung Note 9 and flashed infinix 5 will add to the current price.

As much as I respect and love judge Asaolu, I believe this judgement was unfair. Firstly, the lady lied under oath and didn't get reprimanded for it. And the total price of the phones the defendant was asked to pay was unfair as the lost ones were damaged. Lastly, judge Asaolu didn't even allow the lady to consider the defendants first offer before shutting him down. Still a fan tho!
