Welcome to the flag carrier of Indonesia! Today we are flying the only First Class route left in their network. They’ve had an interesting past in the news, but today we are testing out what their premium service is like. Is it worth the cost? Let me know your thoughts below… I also realized I left out the shots from the first class lavatory. You can take my word that it’s nothing too special, but it does include instructions on how to use a toilet.

Even out back in Economy, Garuda is one of the better full service airlines. They gave out meal boxes even for a short domestic flight and their crew were always courteous and smiling.

Their cabin crew is Garuda’s back bone in their service , I could say even we have a neighbour that a world best airlines , when there is a route that Garuda flies , it’s always better than the world best , a warm attentive service delivered by their FA can be felt even in economy class
Yes there are so many things need to be improved , but from this video I’m glad Garuda really set the bar high in First class
    Thank you for great video

Garuda's longest running bans in Europe were for repeated safety violations, particularly with aircraft maintenance. If they've finally sorted that, then they're worth considering.
I've flown with them a few times, and the cabin crew were always lovely and helpful. Piloting on one flight was terrible, with the worst landing I've ever experienced, however, it was a triangle route and while we were waiting to re-board for the next leg, we saw the crew come out of a service door, with the pilots being berated by the stewardesses for the terrible landing. 😁 The next leg had a new crew and the flight was fine.

I am a third-generation of the Indonesian diaspora in the Netherlands and in the past we often flew with Garuda. Compared to KLM that flies to two Indonesian destinations daily, Garuda has better meals, seats and the personal service is much better. In addition, Garuda flies directly between Amsterdam and Jakarta, with KLM making a stopover in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.
Nevertheless, I fly with KLM, because Garuda is unfortunately an unreliable airline due to mismanagement.
Before the pandemic in 2019, Garuda made many constant flight changes, which irritated many Dutch holidaymakers. The changes were made when people already booked a ticket, or the schedule changed when they were in Indonesia.
    - The KLM flight Amsterdam-Denpasar (Bali) is a great success, something Garuda also noticed. So Garuda suddenly changed its scheduled service from Jakarta to Medan. And from Medan, travelers could transfer to Denpasar. The first generation of the Indonesian diaspora complained about this, mainly older people are born in the Jakarta and Bandung area. Garuda always flew directly to Jakarta and now they had to change in Medan on Sumatra.
    - Garuda thought they would attract wealthy travelers from London with their first class. Amsterdam became a stopover and Garuda flew on to London Heathrow. This was later changed to London Gatwick. A little later, London was canceled again and Amsterdam became the final destination again.
    - Garuda suddenly stops with Medan again, but the stopover to and from Amsterdam is now in the Middle East.
    - The pandemic begins and Garuda no longer flies to Amsterdam at all. After the pandemic, Garuda will only fly to Amsterdam three flights a week.
    - KLM is more expensive than the Middle Eastern airlines that also fly to Indonesia. However, Garuda is even more expensive than KLM. There is much more potential for Garuda in the Netherlands, given the large Indonesian diaspora of almost two million. As a start, Garuda should simply fly to Schiphol every day.
There is also a large Moluccan community in the Netherlands that still feels very connected to the South Moluccas. The tradition is that the young generation visits the birthplace of their ancestors once in their lives. The second generation of Moluccans also travels en masse to Ambon. But the Moluccans from the Netherlands do not have an easy journey to the Moluccas because there is no smooth transfer from a KLM flight in Jakarta to a domestic flight to Ambon. The Moluccans often have to spend one night in a hotel and travel to the Moluccas the next day. Garuda finally noticed this too. For example, Garuda changed the timetable from Amsterdam, so that the Moluccans in Jakarta had a smooth transition to Ambon. Garuda advertised extensively in the Netherlands and the Moluccans booked with Garuda. But what happened after six months? Garuda changed the timetable and the Moluccans still had to spend a night in Jakarta.
The Garuda staff is excellent but there is a lot of mismanagement from the top down. Like the CEO of Garuda secretly smuggling a Harley Davidson from Amsterdam into the belly of the Garuda plane.

Not all you wrote is a truth.
The former CEO has long gone.
This is 2023/2024 not the past and I know Indonesia lot better than you as I am also an old Royal of Indonesia before the republic also lived in The Netherlands between 2003 till end 2010.
Seriously too many historical sabotage by the west about Indonesia including in formal school books!
Coffee is also native to Indonesia not brought by the Dutch, even world map is wrong, inaccurate since Mercator projection 1569, Real Indonesia is Huge as Russia even much richer than the rest of the world.
Yes, I am a complete multiracial multilingual living around the world all alone since childhood, also fluent in Dutch, Formal Arabic and former musiim (no more into anything Middle East anything from it including Judaism and Christianity).
In fact Indonesia is so old much older than eruption of Toba Supervolcano 75,000 years ago, center of world's advance civilization here, people from the west only brought negativity here as because poverty is the nature there in the west including the mindset.

Flew with them back in 1978 Bali to Kai Tak on a DC10-10. As a 15-year old having an hydraulic failure and an emergency landing in Denpasar was truly exciting. Unsure would feel the same now! Nearly half a century later and they look Customercentric. Nice work Garuda.

Service makes up for a lot - care, attention to detail, personalisation, warmth, consideration - all of these need to be there, as well as amazing food and hard product because it costs A LOT of money to fly 1st - you need to feel you are getting what you paid for. The biggest let down of almost all First Class experiences is ground arrivals. All that personal attention, only to be thrown into the trash with the rest of the hoi polloi.

Looks like a great product on the ground when departing Jakarta. GA's European network has seen many changes (even before the pandemic in 2020) and London was eventually axed. Even when GA operated out of London the airline did not provide the sort of ground handling amenities which were shown in this video.

The corruption is rooted in just few thousand years Judaism - Christianity - Islam not native to Southeast Asia.
Indonesia is the true Ancient Modern center of all civilization long before mega eruption of Toba Sumatra 75,000 years ago resulted today world's largest volcanic lake Toba Sumatra with diameter around 100 kilometers.
Including 25,000 years old Gunung Padang pyramid.
Indo Nesos = Indus Islands = Indonesia = World's Largest Archipelago with over 17,000 islands.
World's richest natural resources exactly on the center of the equator line been pictured too small since Mercator projection 1569 while in reality Indonesia is huge as Russia and even much richer than the rest of the world.
It's Ancient Hindu Temple beneath Al-Aqsa Jerusalem.
Hajar Aswad/Black Rock and Mecca are just Lingam Shiva (Hindu).
Judaism/Christianity/Islam are just results of corrupted Hindu in India (BHARAT means West in Indonesian which is India) The Real Original Hindu is from Indonesia not from India.
Judaism/Christianity/Islam are just the same dumb of very poor in everything Middle East and should stay there, no wonder jews/christians/muslims are equally so dumb.
      As I always state:
Thus not a complete multiracial not multilingual never been living around the world all alone since childhood are just the same never evolved dumb apes stuck inside your tiny boxes your entire life and not learning from the past to evolve better.
That includes you and your world leaders 😉 and majority of people worldwide including local Indonesians, all are the same dumb.
Animals = animation, animated, programmed by others unconsciously = majority of people worldwide.
      Monkey See, Monkey Do.
Born complete multiracial multilingual Indonesian Royal Mix, living around the world all alone since childhood.
I am a sigma male, undefeatable.
Indonesia was not, is not and will never be Islamic country.
World map is inaccurate since Mercator projection 1569.
In reality Indonesia is huge as Russia including our ocean and even much richer.
Even much bigger before West and Middle East came took our former Australia, Singapore, Malaysia+Brunei, South Thailand, The Philippines, Vietnam even Madagascar Africa.
Actually countries in Europe are just regencies and provinces in Indonesia.
Why there are too many housings for sale in Europe? Because everything is so fcuking fake there, even the food and beverages are fake even Oud/Agarwood are so fake there as they know nothing about real ones.
Even their fancy standards are based on their very poor nature, notice their fancy brands are only for mediocre people.
Even fastfood like KFC, McDonald's and such taste like plastic there. Bring those fast food in Indonesia to Europe they will crown them as better than Michelin Star as really even fastfood here in Indonesia are much better than in very poor nature Europe, etc.

    Hi Patrick
I enjoyed another awesome flight report from you again.
Given a choice, I will not choose Garuda unless they have a very good offer from Singapore.
Many Indonesians will still choose Singapore Airlines no matter how expensive the airtickets are. They can show off to their friends that they can afford to travel Singapore Airlines.
Another issue being that the crews serve Ang Mohs(Whites) with more attentions than to Asians.
Anyway those are subjective comments/views from Asian travellers and hope to see better future for them.

GA has never had it easy. Constantly playing catch up with the likes of Singapore, ANA, and Thai. It’s not one of those carriers that you know is gonna be a sh*t experience like Air Canada, with delays after delays and eventually cancellations, so you come in with no expectations and feel lucky to board at all. GA has a lot on its table with no way of managing their customer’s expectations. So once you’re let down by them, it’s hard to put it into words. It’s great that GA still has it in them to make your experience a memorable one. I just hope they can keep moving up from now.

It's pretty much a decade old product. A remnant of the second peak (though not the golden era) of GIA between 2010-2017. Then after, as you have mentioned, mismanagement and bunch of corruption scandals brought the airline to its knee. Changes and "rescue" efforts has been made but it's still a long way to go. The next few years is crucial for the airline, it's either we would see them bouncing back once again, or just a part of Indonesian aviation history.
As for why GIA as the flag carrier isn't the largest airline, well... being a flag carrier ≠ largest airline. Taking the Republic of Ireland for example, its flag carrier is Aer Lingus but Ryanair is Ireland's largest airline.

And to be fair, eating caviar (fancy fish eggs) lasts a couple seconds or minutes whereas a first class flight brings you to point A-B in comfort so the disassociative view of reluctance in spending a few hundred on caviar vs a few thousand on an experience is not irrational but fairly common. (Especially among aviation enthusiast). The exit experience alone with the peace and privacy, having immigration officials meet you than standing in line - likely all justified the price point.
