Yes, it's amazing and there are lots of stuff inside, seen videos of it earlier while it was in preview. Very excited to use but need to convince my $ team to get it, which is...
I'm happy that you are so happy! I can't see a reason for it in my life, but then I'm still trying to figure out how to get a measure to work without 3 or 4 attempts.
I want Tabular Editor so that I don't have to wait as long to find out each of my attempts failed :). The most annoying thing to me about PBI Desktop is how long I have to wait each time I try another variation of a measure.
DAX Studio still has its merits. Most importantly, you can use DAX Studio to connect to a dataset, even when you're not an admin. Also, if you want to do serious DAX optimization, reading server timings and query plans, you will still need DAX Studio.
Agreed with Daniel. There is still a place for DAX Studio and we still use it even though we are using Tabular Editor as well. When it comes to optimization tuning and troubleshooting, the Server Timings and All Queries functionality is killer.
This is amazing! Would you rather use Tabular Editor 3 instead of using DAX studio to queries? It looks it has a better intellisense? I feel that im gonna cheat on DAX studio 😅😭
I think DAX Studio is best utilized for query trace and optimizing DAX. I believe Marco said they're working on DAX Studio 3.0, however, so maybe that will have added functionality.
Seems like all the same free features of dax studio and tabular editor together with a price tag. I'm not that excited. What am I missing ?. The pivot table is nice but is it worth the price?
Is also comes with Intellisense, which the free version doesn't have. But I would agree that it's a little difficult to justify the cost at the moment.
Power BI Desktop is constantly syncing up with the Analysis Services instance that is running on your report so it can take a while. You can create many measures in Tabular Editor and deploy them at the same time. You can also automate measure development in Tabular Editor 3, utilize Calculation Groups, and create folders and nested folders and descriptions on the measures.
It's a pity the Enterprise edition is not free :((( but I understand the amount of work that has gone into the product. Kudos to the author, Daniel Otykier. It would be a real shame to hand it over for free. But paying for this means many enterprises will not be willing to buy it because of the other tools - the free version of Tabular Editor, DAX Studio, SSMS, Excel (not free but all businesses have it)... Real pity :((( By the way, I have been told by the author of DAX Studio that it's not possible to create intellisense in DS that would give the same experience as in PBI, where for instance variables are seen and can be prompted. It looks like in TE3 this has been achieved (or maybe even more?). So, what's the truth? Has Micro$oft changed anything in their APIs?
emmm that means you have a long way to go for learning DAX. When you define measure in DAX Query, you need to specify the table this measure will reside in, and then when you use Evaluate to execute DAX query, you need to evaluate a table. {} is a table constructor. docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dax/table-constructor
@@xushuo1987 Thanks but I don't think we need to return all the scalar values with table constructor unless we are using D. Studio. That's quite strange from the aspect of developing measures inside PBI desktop.
@@mintheinaung5702 I think the challenge here is that when you use Power BI desktop visual, you are actually using a simplified front end version of seeing data. Let's think about a situation when you use the Matrix Visual(actually 90% of the standard visuals could be presented using Matrix format as well). When you drag some values to row label and column label, and finally drag a measure to value, what you are trying to present is a table, although you are not writing the query to return a table, Power BI desktop helps you do it. If you use the performance tracker in Power BI desktop and copy any underlying DAX queries to clipboard, you will eventually see the same thing. It's always returning you a table. That's what I meant in my previous reply. If you want to master DAX, you need to get yourself familiar with all these DAX Queries for sure.
@@xushuo1987 Yes, I understand your point. What I was confused is adding [x] in the measure name. (I realized later is that measure name is x inside the [ ] next to table name which is inside single quotes). And returning that [x] with table constructor. (Which is just the requirement for D. Studio/T. Editor 3 or may be SSRS that I never experienced). So, to recap, those are just the form of writing DAX in tools other than PBI Desktop. If you are an author who use merely PBI desktop, and you may use use D. Studio and T. Editor for scripting DAX with table measures i.e CALCULATETABLE, SUMMARIZE, GROUPBY, etc., creating calculated groups, defining perspectives, then, you will never need to know writing measure in a format like 'table name'[measure_name] whenever you create a measure. Which is not the case for PBI desktop.
If your refering from 07:40 then It connects to power bi Tennant and makes use of that. I mean can it spin up an "integrated aas instance" like if you create a new aas project in visual studio. On your local host?
Because in Power bi you cannot format a measure, organizer easily the subfolder, select properly the subfolder, editing a calculation group, editing a dax measure for measure formatting, check dependencies, auto change measure in measure referencies, check the measure before saving and all the rest of the stuff ... If you work professionaly with pbi
It's a nice improvement in some ways over TE2, but TE2 was much, much faster to load, faster to load .BIM files, and you're in and out of a model edit in seconds, not minutes. TE3 is a downgrade in this regard. Add to the fact that it costs the MOON, and it's just not worth it.
Yes, it's amazing and there are lots of stuff inside, seen videos of it earlier while it was in preview. Very excited to use but need to convince my $ team to get it, which is...
You have every right to be excited because TE3 is simply a one-stop shop.
I'm happy that you are so happy! I can't see a reason for it in my life, but then I'm still trying to figure out how to get a measure to work without 3 or 4 attempts.
You'll get there. It does get better.
I want Tabular Editor so that I don't have to wait as long to find out each of my attempts failed :). The most annoying thing to me about PBI Desktop is how long I have to wait each time I try another variation of a measure.
Never seen Patrick so excited in 1 video
Really looking forward to more videos on this. I've found some cool things but I know I'm missing stuff. Yes Patrick I'm voluntelling you.
Yea baby!! Love the update. Not sure about the price, but love the functionality 😍
Thanks for sharing with us! Amazing update!
That's bananas on french toast !
Just wondering if it's the beginning of the end of DAX Studio

Yeah addressed in another comment. For optimization and troubleshooting, DAX Studio is my go to.
Pretty cool!
We have been using Tabular Editor for some time and great to see it has included cool new features. Awesome reaction as always Patrick it's 🍌🍌🍌
The macros are dope!
Sir I m fan of u your videos such amazing and useful 😍

Patrick getting excited about VertiPaq Analyzer so he can find all the things he did sub-optimally 😂
You can create the measure with a dax script too
Can not affort it, it's so expensive :(
Just a basic question...why dont you just create your measures in Power Bi Desktop?
Power BI Desktop is constantly syncing up with the Analysis Services instance that is running on your report so it can take a while. You can create many measures in Tabular Editor and deploy them at the same time. You can also automate measure development in Tabular Editor 3, utilize Calculation Groups, and create folders and nested folders and descriptions on the measures.
There are various reasons. One thing that drives me nuts is the focus on the DAX editor in Power BI Desktop. easy to move out or to mess up.
Great content!!
Thanks Mike!
Can I use tabular editor 3 for new model development and deploy it to workspace....
Yes you can.
TE3 does queries and vertipaq analyzer. So why do I still need dax studio?

I guess I will stay with okd version. Too many corporate hoops to jump through to get it installed.
I have got most important features already
Good point!
I'm gonna tinker with creating DAX Scripts
Nice :) 👊
I'm very familiar with DAX in PBI but new to DAX Studio. Why we have to add [x] to measure name 'Internet Sales', and keep [x] in {} when return?

Can it spin up integrated workspace like visual studio?
Patrick showed this in the video.

Same sentiment with the rest. I wonder what will happen to Dax Studio
Best used for Query Trace and Optimizing DAX.
DAX Studio isn't going anywhere :) We still use it a lot for optimization and troubleshooting.

So why would you use Tabular editor instead of doing the work in PowerBI?

@@thesunnynight Yep, also you can't create perspectives in PBI Desktop.
