    I have no former history with flamenco, at all, and I come from a Nordic country. This is such a high quality cultural entry, that it would be an outright statement of "your culture is not accepted", by the Eurovision audience if this didn't do well. I cannot see that happening. When a piece with this amount of quality enters the competition and it's presented as well as is in EAEA's case, it will be acknowledged even if the song isn't the first one in our personal playlists. I believe the next Eurovision is held in Spain.
    I also understand where you're coming from with how hard it is to "decipher" the song emotionally, initially, even though some people can experience it right away, and some get hints of it from the get-go. Understanding the lyrics, closing my eyes while listening, and imagining that I am the child to whom the mother is singing this song and message, helped me connecting with it. It is amazing.

      I rather not use anything about culture must be accepted, it is tempting to throw it that way but that would not be fair. Not either way as this song can be accepted or not for many reasons. This wont ever take it a status of a song which has its originality. Because in that case Albania has sent as well interesting cultural song.. you see? I would not operate with this as an argument.

    • @Muskettisopuli
      @Muskettisopuli ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Jan Bors I am trying to say that the entry is so good that the only way this would not be received well, is if Eurovision people would literally choose a stance of someone's culture not being accepted. To take such a stance would be so far away from who Eurovision people are, that I don't see it as a plausible scenario and a reason to think the entry is not going to do well. Spain is 100% going to be accepted for their culture, just like every other country. We see that the entry is good, despite not all of us being fans of flamenco or buleria or Spanish music in general. Through this entry we get to appreciate and find these cultural aspects.
      Albania hasn't at this point sent anything that is so well done, that the only explanation for it to flop would be that the Eurovision people are saying "despite the entry being amazing, the sound of your culture is so weird for my ears that we as a cohesive will not recognize how amazing it was despite of the foreigness".
      I understand what you mean by not wanting to let in the idea of "Eurovision doesn't appreciate your culture if the entry doesn't do well" cause in 99,99% of the cases that is neither the correct or appropriate way to deal with an entry that is not doing well, but I am telling you that EAEA is such a high quality entry that there is zero chance for it not being appreciated for its cultural aspects. We appreciate culture. No entry is ever too cultural or ethnic, it just has to be a good song in its own frame and it has to be presented well.
      TLDR; I have never seen an entry being ignored because of the cultural reasons in Eurovision, ever, it has always come down to the song and presentation. Spain will not be too weird for the televoters and it will be high up there in the rankings, cause we never say "your culture is not accepted", hence it has never been a reason to ignore an otherwise good entry. There will be many people who give it points as acknowledgement, despite not giving their 12, and there will be some people who absolutely love it.

    This is my most beloved song this year. I can relate to part of what you are saying. I listen to this song every day on my way to work, and it changes my brain waves. It lifts my spirits and brings me peace of mind. Healing energy.
    I think it is a contender to win the jury vote. I know there are many people from around the world who are moved to tears at the first listen, so so maybe there can be a huge televote score as well.

    I understand everything you say. It's a very cultural song, I think diversity is good for Eurovision. We know that it is a risky bet, but we will be proud of Blanca Paloma, it can connect with the public or not. Thanks for your reflection. greetings from Spain

      I agree about diversity and everything. Glad you are proud as there is definitely for to be proud! Ofc I am not Spaniard, so I dont have this dimension in me implemented (as I am struggle with this always when reviewing czech song). So I take it as I feel it and I feel its a risky but also it was the best option in my opinion. Honestly I like the song but I feel its weaknesses which also can be strengths after all.

    Cuando te sientas a componer pensando en puntuaciones obtienes un tipo de canción y cuando lo haces para expresarte surgen este tipo de canciones. Esto debería ser Eurovisión, y no unificarse en un tipo de música buscando el voto. Cervantes no escribió El Quijote buscando lectores. Un abrazo from Spain!

  • @himilcecastulo5579
    @himilcecastulo5579 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    We focus so much on the votes that we forget the essential: the music. This year, we Spaniards have not thought about receiving votes but about feeling identified and proud, whether others like it or not. Of course we would like to win, but if we don't or even end up in a bad position, we will continue to be proud of Blanca Paloma. This song is special, it's a wake-up call, a shake of conscience, and we already know that human beings don't like that. The mediocre and cowards want to be accepted by others even if they lose their identity. Spain has sent Eurovision a lot of garbage that we hated. And all for not standing out, for fear of not being accepted. If you don't like the song, don't worry, much less obsess over the position it gets in the final. We have accepted the challenge as well as its consequences.

    • @JanBors
      @JanBors  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree about the voice but Eurovision is not just about singing. Remember Gabriela Guncikova, probably the best vocalist that year but that is just a part of the show. And juries dont judge just vocals but overall everything.

    • @ivan864
      @ivan864 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@JanBors Agree with you but juries vote for vocals, overall impression and originality (probably Im not right), and for me Blanca Paloma is:
      Vocals: 10
      Overall Impression: is very artistic and like very perfect so probably 8-9.
      And originality: it's very very original, representative and with a traditional genre , the flamenco ( Spanish folk) so for me is a 9.
      So if they are objective she should be 1-2 in juries ( fight between Loreen and her).
      Although you are right and probably national juries from other countries wont understand her so probably you are right.
      As a Spaniard I Hope she gets a good position but we Will see, maybe you are right. My prediction is:
      Juries --- 1-2
      Televote --- very unpredictable but I Hope she stays into top 10

    The fact that it doesn't have a "pop music" development doesn't mean that it doesn't have a development... In fact it has several moments with very different intensities. Just compare the starting point with the end, or the intimate “moon moments” with the group “rite”.
    In any case, it’s true that it has a structure that can be "strange" for many people. This can be risky, but at the same time, it can make it stand out among 25 songs with "pop music" development. We’ll see. Very interesting analysis, though.

    Is strange that this song seems melodically flat to you, for me it is not. I think that the singer's own voice is what makes the melody go up and down since the musical instruments are barely perceptible. I don't think it's a song that only the Spanish-speaking audience understands, I understand very little Spanish and I love it. My question is, countries that don't have English as an official language or people who don't understand English are unable to enjoy music sung in English? 🤔

    • @JanBors
      @JanBors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, this is what I have said in the video - the sonts power is lyrics for sure, and this one power is out cuz I dont understand it as well its melody because its strange to me and I am learning to like it instead of liking it instantly. I am curious about juries
      and audience. Really. But that is a no stop

      @@JanBors I think you haven't really understood me, I'm not talking about the lyrics, I'm talking about the melody. I think that the melody is built by Blanca Paloma with her voice and not by the musical instruments and there you can perfectly find the melody of the song and verify that it is not flat, it has highs and lows. It is like songs sung a Capella. Ty for answering me. Here's a new subscriber who didn't know your channel 😅

    Let's see, first of all thank you very much for your honesty and for your excellently argued comments, unlike others who don't even take the time to try to understand something.
    This song is special, it is true and it is true that we Spaniards and Latinos in general can appreciate it more because of the language and because we poetically understand its meaning and the feeling it carries, but it is also true that its rhythm may seem very linear but nevertheless when it hypnotizes you you get fully into the song and you feel curious to know what happens, when Blanca is with her special voice and her expression to make you understand that something emotionally is happening and she would tell you more than she offers it in the woman since it is to them that it is directed, in my humble opinion it is of a barbaric feminism. We have already won by making this piece of art known to the world, whoever does not pick it up loses it.😘

    @dbeCreator ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As a Spaniard that I am, I can tell you that your opinion is perfectly respectable. Nor is it so rare that a proposal that goes beyond what is established and goes taking risks causes surprise among part of the fans. And it is difficult to deny that in the latest editions of the ESC, most of the countries have sent proposals that seem to have been generated from templates of historical themes from other years in the contest, with a little editing in lyrics or choruses (with a stink of "déjà vu" that throws anyone off), mostly with silly lyrics in English, even if they are not English-speaking countries.
    The only thing not acceptable here would have been to give an opinion on the song without having been duly informed about its content and meaning. From the moment that you have done so, an got yourself properly informed, it seems to me that you have every right in the world to pronounce yourself on the matter as you see fit. I really like the song and its staging, but I find your analysis interesting and useful.
    One thing I agree with you about, is that for many people it would be easier if the song developed with some little "in crescendo" in terms of vocal sound, starting from a beginning with the style of a quiet ballad. I'm not sure that it would make the proposal better, but probably more attractive and easier to catch for the mainstream public.

    Thanks for taking your time in this second thoughts analysis. I still think once we know all the songs, that the Spanish entry will stand out a lot. Nothing can compare to it and that's very important in Eurovision, apart from her amazing vocals, stage presence and the staging itself that will elevate the song even more. Maybe there is no change in the 'line' but the 'line' is very high from the very first second that will make Spanish entry unique. All and all I think it will be among the top 10, but not a clear winner, for some of the reasons you explain. Once again thanks a lot amigo and congrats for your channel. 😊

      we all see Eurovision a bit differently. Somebody as a cultural mix, somebody as a pop song contest someone as a entertainment show... it is all of this. So I would like to share the enthusiasm but I also look at this more practically. But I wish for the best result as i see a huge change in Spanish approach and I like it. Success means continuity and that is what you need.

    Hello Jan,
    Thanks for your sensible and smart reaction. I voted for this song and this interpreter, because for my it was the best this year in Benidorm Fest. I listen the song in the semi-finals and the same thing happened to me, I had to give it some time to decode.
    I agree with you that this will not win Eurovision 2023, but I found Blanca Paloma an interesting artist.
    First Flamenco I have to say that is not my cup of tea. It is not the music that I usually listen to. But, I have to acknowledge that Flamenco it is a very intense way to sing and to transmit feelings. Usually songs and music are the best way to transmit a felling (Eurovision is a good example) and Flamenco has the capacity to transmit combined feelings like for example misery and happiness, gilt and love, or in the case of the song EA, EA motherhood love and fury. Actually Blanca Paloma is not singing, She is yelling at you her mother love for her children. That is way see has some aggressive gesture in her performance like raising her had… (think of nature examples of mothers defending their young furiously).
    Second, the meaning (it is a gipsy poem): The narrator of the songs history is a Grand mother that is taking care of her grandchildren while her daughter is working outside (the dancers-back Corus, the mothers are represented harvesting, making the laundry ….) She is and elder woman afraid to die and not be able to see beloved ones anymore. The song lyrics says “I want to be berried in the moon so I will be able to watch you every night”
    On another part of the lyrics says the “tiers of the Nile” refereeing to children pain. The Nile river is a symbol of life that combined with the crying (pain) of the children it refers to the straggle for life and the and the continuity of the soul and love through death (you know Egyptians).
    Third, my interpretation, why I voted for it. Besides the artistic value of the song, the scenography and the performance of Blanca Paloma my interpretation was political. The song was written and selected for Benidorm fest many months ago and for sure that the artis do not have anything to do with my interpretation. But the weeks that Benidorm fest was taking place we had on the news the kidnapping of the 16824 Ukrainian children to be given in adoption. The song and the performance made my think about the pain of their grandparents and parents.

    Songs (with capital letter) are Lyrics + Music. The lyrics are the body and the music is a dress. Just master pieces have this perfect balance. And Ea ea is one of it.
    Also in classical music some times the melodies are very simple and what is the most importan is the instrumentation and harmony (Mozart symphony 40th, Beethoven 7th symphony).
    Don't let be dazzle with just clothes and pay most attention to the body. Probably it is the worst side of Eurovision song contest format

    When Blanca Paloma won the Benidorm Fest I wondered how people would get this song/performance. After checking lots of videos I don't have a clear explanation about the different reactions that I've watched. Expectations are, very probably, the worst enemy of Eaea and, from my point of view, they explain most of the negative reactions. Before the Benidorm Fest Eaea was the only song that I hadn't listened to from the begining to the end... I am not a big fan of Flamenco. However, when I watched the performance I I forgot even to breath and I've seen many people reacting like this. Some of the reactions are truly funny because you realize people are not able to say a word. Not only Eaea, every single song is speaking of ourselves and this is not bad or good, it is about the alchemy of music in our lives and our emotions. You cannot say to others "You must love or hate this song", whatever song. But, and this my only very big BUT, the perspective of future ESC without entries like this one makes me think about a false diversity, or just a "diversity of tastes" (as many as people are watching the event).

    • @JanBors
      @JanBors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree and disagree with you at the same time. What diversity means? We have a strong pop-mix year ar Eurovision where entries are very differente to each other. Different genres etc. Someone sends something mainstream, some country says something funny, other something more nationalistic / traditional... Spain sends this this year, last year it was basically an opposite and it was also good. I believe that would be great if any country send something just awesome and we will have a discussion what we prefer and why. And thats it.
