In German labor market, applicants can be "over-qualified". For example if the department leader doesn't hold a Phd title he/she will likely not hire a Phd holder. Hence a Phd title can even reduce your job chances!
Phd is necessary for a career at the university but there are only a few vacancies there. So most academics must earn money in the industry.
There are jobs which a university study isn't useful for at all, e.g. plumbing. This is why there are basically two educational paths in Germany:
    1. vocational education ("Lehre", "gewerbliche Ausbildung", "Berufsausbildung") leading to the certificates "Geselle" and "Meister"
    2. University education ("Studium") leading to the certificates "Bachelor" and "Master"
It depends on personal interests and aptitudes which education suits one at most. Some people even attend a vocational education first, and later they study at a University.

@thomasnittel4561 the system here is quite different and I am still struggling with it. In some menial jobs I had to remove my title, yeah! Thanks for the comment 😀

If you need further information about the education system in Germany please let me know.
By the way, Germany does not only recruit university graduates from abroad. Foreigners are also allowed to come here not only for university study but also for a vocational education, e.g. for cook, caregiver, nurse or plumber. So, this might be a chance for young people from less-developed countries. Of course they must learn German first.

100% agree. The practical aspect of our education system is almost non existential even to this day. When i try to explain it to few people interested in doing PhD abroad , straight after masters, that, they should consider doing some internship in the field of their study, to not only gain experience in the field but most importantly, to see if that's what they really should be really doing. The most common answer is, why waste time doing internship ?🙂Not only in Germany but in most western countries, the job opportunity is mostly based on what you can do and not what degree you have achieved. So refreshing to hear you speak about this topic.

I couldn't agree more. I even didn't get my master. When I got my bachelor degree, I was already working and couldn't afford to quit to continue to study for a master's degree. Since then, there were several times when I thought about going back to studying, but in the end, I always decided against it. I already work in a good position, and getting a master's degree would just have been for the title, but it would not have boosted my career. Over the years, I have seen many people with a master's degree fresh from university and realized that they don't know much more of what is needed for the actual job than I did when I started working. In fact, even after a few years on the job, many of them come to me to ask for advice. And it's true, at least in software development and it, many companies care about your experience and if you are able to do the job and not so much about your formal education as long as you have some formal education at all.
