Squier is a nice bass too, my main reason to use squier for lessons is to make learning less complex as a 4 string makes things easier to understand. Tone is mostly in your fingers and not really in the bass, a good instrument is a bonus and not really a requirement, I am happy with the way it sounds so I use it almost everywhere.
