    I see a lot of people having problems with their Conventional Cutting when it comes to the non-collapsed shapes such as the bit slot lines. To be able to go back and cut in the other direction of the line you will have to: Start at the bottom of the line and follow the walking ants all the way up. Once you are at the really top of the line, you will have to hold in the Auto button to force Origin to return back down.

    Great video, thanks. Now you just need to start selling the systainer foam inlays, so that we can create inlays for other sustainers as well. Most of us will not have more than one shaper systainer at the moment.

      The Systainer.Store sells various foam inserts for Tanos sustainers. There are other dealers as well. They don't carry this exact insert, but they could look into getting it.

    Great video! Absolutely love these tips + tutorials!
    I'm wondering, though:
    1) Why bother placing a strip of Shaper tape at the near/closest edge of the stock, and another 6" back from that? AFAICT, if the Origin is mostly/always facing "back" (directly away from the near edge of the workspace), those bits of tape will almost never be in the camera's FOV. My first inclination would have been to omit them.
    2) The layout of the tape seems systematically closer together near the back of the work area, and further and further apart as you work your way toward the near field (where the operator stands). Is that intentional? From other things Shaper folks have said, I'd have kept the spacing even at 3" or 4" throughout the camera-visible part of the work area.

    • @rmfuhrer
      @rmfuhrer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops, nvm, didn't notice the segment at about 3:20 where you discussed both of those questions.
      Still, the benefit of "less blurriness in the raster scan in the near field" seems a bit vague to me. As to the "cleaner and easier-to-perform Add-to-Scan operation" motivation, in this project, it's not clear why one would want/need to Add-to-Scan.

    Great stuff. Here’s a detailed Shaper/Festool question.. it looks as though you’re controlling the dust collection via the Bluetooth collar on the extraction hose - do you have the Origin connected to the power outlet of the CT Midi (etc) or to a separate power supply? If I connect my Origin to the CT Mini, then it triggers suction even in ‘standby’ mode and the Bluetooth collar doesn’t influence the extractor on/off!

    • @Shapertools
      @Shapertools  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tl;dr: Connect Origin directly into a power source, not the dust collector.
      [longer] The automatic outlets on dust collectors are designed for tools that consume zero power when they are not active. When the attached tool's motor turns on, the vacuum detects the increase in current draw and turns on the dust extraction. Because Origin has an inbuilt computer that is always running, even when the spindle is not, plugging Origin into the dust collector's outlet will result in constant current draw from that outlet. This will turn the vacuum on because it is designed to turn on whenever it senses current draw. For this reason, we recommend plugging origin directly into a wall outlet or power strip.

    • @Shapertools

      Spindle speed of 5 is usually sufficient and a downcut bit will provide the best results. Upcut works as well but can leave a bit of fuzz at the top of the cut.

    you don't say in the video which router you are using, and what is that cnc gizmo on the front of the router?, as a "shaper" is an industrial quality router table with a permanently fixed spindle, guides, etc. as an example a "MARTIN" shaper.

      I got a good laugh out of that one. I have a vintage Martin shaper inherited from the previous homeowner. No idea why they named the company Shaper. For that matter, why isn’t Festool called Investool.

  • @hshpegel

    In the video, you simply reverse direction your cutting to get the best edge. When I try this, SO lifts the bit and will not allow the cut in the reverse direction. What did I miss?

      @@hshpegel I finally got an Origin and cut my foam and encountered this a few times. While I was trying to finish as expediently and as accurately as possible I did forge ahead so I did not do a lot of imperical testing on the "WHY?". My gut tells me it may have been a lack of tape in a given area so direction got confused. The tape health meter was half in the black and should have been good but this is my pure guess.
      My observation on the couple slots that did this... just go with it. Hit auto, see the direction it wants to go, follow it. When you reach the end, it reverses and so do you. Then at the end of that slot, finish in the middle somewhere. Worked pretty well for me. I did a custom insert using Sam and Dr. BuckyLab and added some of my own items. The only gotchas I had were on the Doctor's vertical support bar squares. They got treated as guides and the cutting direction ended up being the wrong way so fuzzy. Other than that, all was good.

    • @SomewhatAbnormal
      @SomewhatAbnormal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For anyone who encounters an issue with making the Shaper cut in both directions, I too had the same issue and it’s neither described in the video nor did anyone at Shaper answer the question as far as I can see. The solution: when you just single click the green button the cutter will be in an auto mode. It’s trying to keep you from making mistakes. Instead, click the green button then once your bit is in the material, hold it down. You’ll notice that you get a green outline around your cut ring and you’ll be able to force the machine to cut in either direction and it will not retract.

    • @Shapertools

      No, Origin did not get confused. These two tape fields are not part of the same scan. And even if they were, they are not moving relative to one another. I hope this helps clarify.
