Nice video. I just got an old tiller from my father in law that has been sitting in the brush for a long time. I hooked it up and took a couple of turns around the field. I could tell it wasn't running as well as it should. Now I know what I have to do. Thanks!
I did too when I bought a King Kutter 48" Tiller that was lightly used and then set up for a few years. I pulled the side cover to clean and inspect things. I then drilled and tapped the side cover for a 1/4" drain plug at the bottom of the plate. Should be a factory feature.
What’s most amazing is that this happens to be the first video I clicked on. I too have this same famous KingKutter ll Looks like you’ve covered things pretty dang well. Can’t believe my luck. Thanks man!
That side cover isn’t a problem and the gasket is reusable. And with the cover off you can see if there is an impending problem with the gears or bearings.
Thanks for the video. Only thought I had was to maybe heat up the gear oil by running it a while before you turn over and dump. I think I'll do it your way but add that step. I'm not opening up that side either:)
You could always weld on your own drain plug hole. And for that top gearbox I would recommend taking out that plug and putting in a valve with a barb connector or something to put a tube on. When you want to change the oil just put a tube on that valve (or leave it on there with a cork in it) and open the valve and drain it into a container with no mess at all. I have also thought of putting valves on the bottom of drain pans on my engines also. Maybe someday.
I thought about pumping it out, but wanted to get a look at the shaft seals anyhow. I was going to lift it to check the seals, so flipping it wasn’t any more trouble.
Thank GOD there are people smarter than me, if I ever have to remove the side cover I will see if there is enough clearance to drill and tap a drain plug. My gear box always has milky oil in it
And it is incredibly stupid that there is not drain in the side gear box. Of course i am sure they want you to have to take the thing to a shop and pay someone to do a job that could be very easily done at home by those of us who try to take care of the equipment we use. Thanks again for the video.
Should be 80w-90w oil... yes running it for a about 5 minutes will help Loosen the oil and it will come out better when you go to change it. But if you don’t know there is oil in the tiller don’t run it. General purpose grease for tractors for zerk fittings.
I can understand you not wanting to break the seal but I think it was a mistake this is a great opportunity to open that box inspect all the components and clean it out well metal shavings and so forth may be present that are not going to drain out the way you are proposing it's not really a big deal to reseal a gasket I don't recommend your method
I recommend you put your big boy pants on get yourself a 3 dollar tube of RTV silicone and do the oil change right. Pissing around lifting things up like that is how people get hurt.
Thanks so much! Just like you, had no luck with TH-cam videos except this one! Thanks again!
amen brother on the fact that there is not inforation out there on changing gear oil on these tillers. Thank you for taking the time to make one.

Great video! Glad to see it's still available.

Thanks for the video. My owners manual is terrible. This helped a lot.
Like to know how much oil to put in it

Great video We’re in the same boat. Thanks for sharing.
Did you ever consider an ( Oil suction Gun.) To pull out the oil? Well, that seems to work for me., thanks for the video

magnetic block heater for a few hours first and it drains better.
enjoyed the video, but what type of fluid did you fill it back up with?
80w - 90w gear oil
You could always weld on your own drain plug hole.

Good video. I agree other videos say "Oil Change Video". They just tell you how to add it not how to change it.
Did try the bottom gear case bolt ?
Man, I thought I had nasty ground. That's the crudiest tiller I've ever seen! Surprised your bearing seals on the end haven't given up the ghost yet.
They did
A year after
I have a Bobcat T60 Tiller that also does not have a drain plug. I was thinking I'd use a siphon?
I thought about pumping it out, but wanted to get a look at the shaft seals anyhow. I was going to lift it to check the seals, so flipping it wasn’t any more trouble.
Thank you very much for sharing your expertise.
Can you vac out the oil?
probably could
Thank you. You were a big help
Hey man this works and I like your idea imma use it myself very helpful dont want to fool with having to reseal the box and all that
Nice vid!
LOL that drain "system" looks designed by Dodge Ford GM transmission builders.
Stay gold.
Great video
Wow! Thank you. Why didn`t i think of that? Great job.
What type of oil you put in there?
80w - 90w gear oil
My Rankin 60" says to use 90wt in the center gearbox and 140wt in the side gearbox.
You never mentioned what oil you put in. Is it both gear oil and what viscosity? Thanks and great video.
80w - 90w gear oil in both
My KKII tiller has 000 grease in the gear box and diff instead of gear oil.
I got that same one,,,how much oil will u need to refill both the gear box and side pan?
And how much u put in the gear box?
Thank u
Corry Starner Sorry but I don’t recall.
That’s cool… No biggie, good video though… Good idea on turning it upside down very helpful thank you
What type oil goes back in there?
I SHOULDAKNOWN To be safe you should check what the manufacturer recommends. I used generic Gear oil. 80w-90w.
I know this is an old video, but for future reference you only had to loosen all the bolts on side plate and loosen plate and oil would drain out.
Thank GOD there are people smarter than me, if I ever have to remove the side cover I will see if there is enough clearance to drill and tap a drain plug. My gear box always has milky oil in it
Milky oil means water in oil. Drain it, flush with clean oil, drain and fill.
There is room for a plug.
And it is incredibly stupid that there is not drain in the side gear box. Of course i am sure they want you to have to take the thing to a shop and pay someone to do a job that could be very easily done at home by those of us who try to take care of the equipment we use. Thanks again for the video.
There’s a drain plug on the opposite side, the tine/shaft side in the tiller. At least that’s what mine has.
Should be 80w-90w oil... yes running it for a about 5 minutes will help
Loosen the oil and it will come out better when you go to change it. But if you don’t know there is oil in the tiller don’t run it. General purpose grease for tractors for zerk fittings.
Use a oil extraction pump
I gave this a thumb up, but use camera motion sparingly to make it easier to watch.
The drain plug is on the bottom front, it’s covered in dirt
I can understand you not wanting to break the seal but I think it was a mistake this is a great opportunity to open that box inspect all the components and clean it out well metal shavings and so forth may be present that are not going to drain out the way you are proposing it's not really a big deal to reseal a gasket I don't recommend your method
2 minutes in and I just wanted to note that this guy says "I guess" a whole lot!! :-) COME ON MAN, SPEAK WITH AUTHORITY.. LOL 😆
All you need to do is tilt your tiller back to drain, you could have done that when it was sitting in your garage !😂
I recommend you put your big boy pants on get yourself a 3 dollar tube of RTV silicone and do the oil change right. Pissing around lifting things up like that is how people get hurt.
O hell no...dude get a gasket or some gasket maker.
Terrible design for this tiller.
