The Main singer is Brian Connelly ….. the other person that comes in later through the song is Steve Priest ( Bass)…. A great band from the UK with so many hits can’t wait for more reactions of The Sweet.
Sweets major hits were written specifically for them by the songwriting team of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, the latter of which also wrote Love Is A Battlefield for Pat Benetar and Simply The Best for Tina Turner amongst many others. Sweet did however also write hits of their own including Fox On The Run which is their biggest selling single, Action which was covered by Def Leppard, and Love Is Like Oxygen. They also, as mentioned, penned their B sides, plus wrote most of the songs on their albums.
The year was 1973, I was 9 years old, and my Dad took me to the Lake District here in the UK on holiday in the caravan for a couple of weeks. He'd just had the latest mono Philips casette deck fitted in his Ford Escort van and the Sweets album was never out of it, apart from when Slade or Gary Glitter were playing of course, the glam rock music drove my Dad mad, but he put up with it for me. This was 50 years ago and my Dad's been gone 10 years now, and I miss him beyond words. Hearing this track again took me straight back in time to all those years ago and I thank you for that!
Great story to read! Back in '73 I was only six years old and Hellraiser/Burning was my first Sweet single and my introduction to hard rock and glamrock.
Thanks for the mention and thanks for the reaction. Yes, it is great fun and that was always the point. It's always (always always) to see them doing a Top of the Pops performance of any song. The exaggerated make-up and costumes were due to them wanting to spend more time with the costume and make-up girls at the BBC. So they got more and more outrageous and then got into competition with Slade to be even more ridiculous. However, the singing and playing is immaculate and Mick Tucker remains one of the great underrated drummers of all time - any band would have been happy to have him.
A lot of the early studio recordings used sessions musicians and the boys did the vocals only. This was a decision made by their managers and whilst the boys hated it they had no say. When they finally got to play it all they proved beyond doubt that they were competent musicians. The B sides where their own work and showed a much heavier sound. At a point they split with their managers and released the self written and produced Fox On The Run and everything from then on in was their own work. Please please please look at Action, Lies In Your Eves, Turn It Down - Love Is Like Oxygen (the long version) is a classic and for something different Fountain off the Level Headed Album as well. Burn on the Flame, The Six Teens and so many more. As a show case foe the Drummer Mick Tucker you have to hear Man With The Golden Arm only one reaction has been doen to this) and with respect to Hellraiser - please have a listen to the live version of this - again - can't fake it on stage!
As far as I know the sweet played on all of their tracks. They did not write the early hit singles but wrote some of the later ones, their last hit being about 1978. The theatrical vocal is from Steve Priest the base player. The lead singer was Brian Connoly. They were very recognisable through their harmonies. They lived the life too and were known for lewd and outrageous performances. I think only Andy Scott is alive nowm
They did not play on the very early bubblegum hits like Little Willy, Coco,Poppa Joe. Basically because they were not trusted to complete the recording in time. Once the record company realised how good they were live they got to play. I think Wig Wam Bam is the first single they played on and it really shows as it has them stamped all over it. PS it was them singing on the early hits.
The sweet the greatest watch this live at the rainbow or listen too strung up album live and you will have to go thew all there albums to rock with them keep it sweet❤
I've noticed a comment that Brian and Steve play off each other and they really do. In saying that there is a song called "No You Don't" that this is really comes into play. You need to get the version of the video that is on youtube and is from musicladen. Watching the video also plays into the song.
From 1972 onwards they are pretty much freed of their sponsors insistance that they get session musicians in and they dropped the teen friendly lyrics too and became closer to their contemporaries like T-Rex and Bowie. But always a bit out there though.
The voices you hear most in this song are Brian doing lead and Steve (bass player) interjecting lines. Watch their videos so u can tell who does what. The guitar player has the highest falsetto you'll ever hear.
I saw this great band at Cromer Links pavillion back in the early 70's, they had pop records out which had some chart success but to me, where a bit lightweight, i was very pleasantly surprised to find that they were brilliant musicians and oh how they rocked!!
Early singles like "Poppa Joe", "Little Willy" or "Funny Funny" were sung by Brian Connolly, but the band was a studio band. It's only from around "Wig-Wam Bam" that the other members also played on the songs. This was done because it was cheaper for the record companies since they had these studio-musicians on their payroll anyway. Sweet were under contract with ChinniChap for RCA. ChinniChap was songwriters Nicki Chinn and Mike Chapman who wrote all of Sweet's A-sides while Sweet themselves were responsible for the B-sides. This was done as a compromise, since Sweet didn't want to be seen as a bubblegum-rock band and wanted to play heavier rock instead. Cheerio. Greetings from Belgium.
Mud - Tiger Feet! There was a dance that came with this massive hit that the teenage boys lined up and did in the disco or in my case the playground! 😅
great seventies rock band ,two fantastic vocalists in this group. try out : " no you don't" a version of "new york groove" a song titled " a c/ d c" the catchy " little willie" and the rocker "ballroom blitz" " the 6 teens" the popish "fox on the run"
My youth! Sadly for the band Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman wrote all their hits thus making all the money! Sure Mick Mars from Motley Crue grabbed the riff for this song for their track "Kickstart my heart"!
Brian on lead vocals? tick. Andy Scott guitar? tick 100 percent, ditto Mick Tucker drumming and Steve Priest. Like fuck did thery not play on these classics.

That's one of the gifts that music gives you.

The Sweet was one of the Glam Rock bands from the UK in the 70`s along with T-Rex Slade, David Bowie, The Glitter Band and so on.
I saw this great band at Cromer Links pavillion back in the early 70's, they had pop records out which had some chart success but to me, where a bit lightweight, i was very pleasantly surprised to find that they were brilliant musicians and oh how they rocked!!
Still love Sweet 👊👊👊

Cheerio. Greetings from Belgium.
Bloody hell, aint heard this tune for years lol, forgot it even existed!
I think it's the B-sides that were written by them initially. Some of their biggest hits were from Micky Chin.
Check out No You Don't and Sweet FA
Checkout the full album version of their last hit in 1978 ‘Love is like oxygen’.
Early 70s UK glam rock was pure ridiculous fun.

Sweet made me rock!!
Bravo,Haniers! Top flight!
"Explorers, in the further regions of experience. Demons to some, angels to others.”
The rocky horror used the Sweets musical style for sure
Mud - Tiger Feet! There was a dance that came with this massive hit that the teenage boys lined up and did in the disco or in my case the playground! 😅
That was written by chin Chapman too I think .
Live version is so much more intense. So many good tunes from Sweet. B sides definitely heavier

The SWEET were punk before Punk. But they were so much more....
Steve Priest (Bass) is the slightly "cheeky" voice in places, check some videos of them - great band!
