  • Sergei Eduardovich Bortkiewicz (1877 - 1952), 10 Preludes, Op.33 (1926)
    Performed by Jouni Somero (2014)
    00:00 - No. 1 Maestoso
    06:08 - No. 2 Vivace
    07:23 - No. 3 Andantino
    09:04 - No. 4 Sostenuto
    10:19 - No. 5 Andantino semplice
11:37 - No. 6 Sostenuto, con espressione dramatica
    15:25 - No. 7 Andantino
    19:31 - No. 8 Andante sostenuto e cantabile
    25:03 - No. 9 Andantino
    28:45 - No. 10 Patetico
I'd recommend No's 5 to 10 if you want to hear what these preludes at their best.
Bortkiewicz was Ukrainian (he was born in Kharkov, 16 February 1877) and studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory-in his spare time at first, for his father insisted that he study law. ‘I inherited my mother’s pleasure in music-making’, he wrote. ‘And what a blessing it was that we made much music when I was young. My mother played the piano very well and I was passionately fond of music.’
Unlike some of his Russian contemporaries (Rachmaninov, Medtner, Scriabin) Bortkiewicz was not a sufficiently gifted pianist to make a career as a soloist, though after his debut (Munich, 1902) he made several European tours.
‘I am a Romantic and a melodist’, he wrote in an essay towards the end of his life, ‘and as such and in spite of my distaste for the so-called ‘modern’, atonal and cacophonic music, I do hope that I composed some noteworthy works without getting the reputation of being an epigone or imitator of composers who lived before me.’ Bortkiewicz’s compositions are dominated by those for his instrument and many are well worth investigating. Perhaps they lack profundity and originality in the widest sense. But does the only music we appreciate have to be by the great composers who overturned systems, struck out for the unknown, and challenged their muse? One hopes not. There must always be a place for those like Bortkiewicz who reflect so elegantly and expertly on what has gone before, rather than shake us by the ears and grab us (sometimes screaming) into the future.

Benji104, I am so, so pleased that you discovered Bortkiewicz. You are right, it's very florid, hundreds of notes to the beat (hyperbole- being hyperbolic) and all the notes are in perfect harmony, like Chopin and Liszt. All of Borkiewicz's compositions are superb and beautiful, always brings tears to my eyes. There is another pianist called "Koji Attwood", who appears to love to play Bortkiewicz. Watch K Attwood
On TH-cam, he does something suspicious under the piano. I am so proud of Bortkiewicz and love him so much, it pleases me that you are so impressed with him. I am happy for both of you and not being arrogant nor condescending. We love Bortkiewicz!

@@MajorAndMinor Bortkiewicz's piano works in majors such as his Maestoso No.1 does ressemble Scriabin. It has a sense of despair at the beginning, and slowly, it rises to a greater range. His slower more majestic pieces ressemble Scriabin's piano works whilst his faster paced pieces such as Vivace or andante cantabile do feel like Chopin's piano works.

I like the way Bortkiewicz keeps referencing previous works. The first prelude is the soulmate of the Etude "La Brunne". You see this constantly. He, like Chopin, is also a favorite of pianists.due to his melody and "story telling" in each piece. But what a tragic life! Love the 8th Etude - such a gem both to play and hear.

Jamshed Delvadavala, I am getting emotional while I write this. Bortkiewicz is being discovered by many new Classical music followers, particularly followers of great composers of piano music.
There will come a day, hopefully soon, when he will be a household name and on the tips of everyone's tongue.
I discovered Bortkiewicz and Nikolai Kapustin about twenty five years ago and listened to them frequently. They are the new kids on the block; they will surpass the usual great composers from the periods 1650 to 21st century.
      composers.
Someone wrote about what a tough time (financial) S Bortkiewicz had during his musical career. I wish I lived during this period, I would have helped him. I care about struggling composers/ pianists (especially the ones who could bring tears to my eyes like Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Kapustin, Bortkiewicz and a few others) and my other passion is dogs.
If I am blissful, sad or dying, it is the music of Rachmaninov, Kapustin, Scriabin and Bortkiewicz I want to listen to most of all.
Jamshed Delvadavala, they don't get better, watch them rise to the top.

Beautifully played Jouni Somero. I am mad about Bortkiewicz. If all my favourite composers were Gods, I would worship them. I hope you felt utterly content having played them. Sitting under a large tree on Waikiki beach, after my gruelling hours of tennis, I would listen to Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Kapustin, concertos by Chopin, Saint Saens, Liszt and others, of course, Sergei Bortkiewicz. My eyes would be flooded with tears. I don"t know why beautiful music does this to me. Even when I try to sing, my eyes get flooded , this is why I don't like to sing. Anyway, very well played. You pressed all the right buttons for me.

      @thomasbarnich2004 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You can't compare both really. Bortkiewicz might be more appealing at first sight (or at first hearing) but if you listen a few more times you'll quickly get bored. It is a bit like a surface and not much below it (I'm not criticizing him, I quite enjoy listening to Bortkiewicz). Medtner is the exact opposite. At first hearing he's a bit off-putting, but his music is just incredibly rich and deep, it's a whole universe with a tiny door. I needed a long time to love his music but now I've been obsessed with his music for years and can't seem to get out.

"Unlike some of his Russian contemporaries (Rachmaninov, Medtner,
Scriabin) Bortkiewicz was not a sufficiently gifted pianist to make a
career as a soloist, though after his debut (Munich, 1902) he made
    several European tours."
Talk about setting the bar high. Rachmaninov was voted by "leading pianist, Sokolov, Brendel, Schiff, and Lewis [in a Limelight Poll]" as being the greatest piano player ever recorded. However, it is likely that Liszt was the greatest piano player ever, but there are only written reviews to support. So as they say, shoot for the moon, if you miss, you land among the stars. This composer is definitely underappreciated.

Was Bortkiewicz Russian or Ukrainian? As Kharkov (Kharkiv), his birthplace, is a Ukrainian municipality, he would properly be considered Ukrainian.

@@DailyKosia you're right! to be honest, he's more cosmopolitan, then national composer. but we can't deny the fact he was born in Kharkiv (that is being bombed by russians, would russians bomb russian city?) and if u were ukrainian, you would also hear a lot of ukrainian themes in his piano works, for example "Віють вітри буйні" in his "What the Nurse sang".

Interesting. Glimmers of greatness and lots of promise mixed with occasional flashes of inspiration. Sadly, as so often with Bortkiewicz, this doe just does not finish rising. Comparing these preludes with, for example, early Scriabin, you can see the difference between an almost-great and a real-great.

Bortkiewich was nothing "Ukrainian", for your information: all the time before 1917 Kharkov was inseparatedly Big Russia (it is divided from Polish-Austrian "Ucraine" by river Dniepr). Mostly Russians lived in Kharkov (in difference with Galitzia). This composer had polish roots and may be Russian too.

It's interesting to find composers on TH-cam saved from oblivion. But some music is forgotten for a reason. These are pleasing and well done compositions. But there is hardly any real individuality, it all sounds "like" somebody else.

No, it's not Chopin. This is fundamentally Russian-influenced, and some of the harmony (for example, the opening to no. 4) is not at all Chopinesque.

Bortkiewicz is one of those composers whose melodies remain with you precisely because they are so lush and romantic. The Prelude (No 8) and Elegy have some of the greatest melody lines in piano music.
