I love Temtem, I personally don’t care if it’s derivative of Pokémon. Pokémon had the monster tamer market for years and never gave us an mmorpg. Their loss, I’m just glad someone made this game! It’s great!

I feel the same way. Nintendo and the Pokemon devs know fans what a game like this but they won't release one. That's why playing Temtem on the Switch feel so right, lol.

well not really personally i was more interested in the the battling, people i don't really think (despite pokemons iconic catch phrase would have you think) that collecting has ever been the main appeal of monster tamers. I've always found building a team throughout the game to be more enjoyable than actually completing the "pokedex" (or whatever the game in question chooses to call it)

Cus pokemon like isn't accurate or encompassing enough for monster training games. Digimon and monster rancher play nothing like pokemon, more do most games in the genre outside of being some sort of turn based.

I’m almost to endgame and haven’t even paid attention to the story. When I play co-op games I never pay attention to the story. So as far as the story is concerned, I know nothing.
As far as the battle aspects, I loooove the stamina system replacing Power Points. The battle system is the best overhaul difference from the Pokémon games. It feels much more rewarding and is not as simple as using one team to push through an entire play through. This game will require you to play smart, or lose.
The game is built for many different types of play styles for end game. You can be a fashionista, a competitive battler, a breeder, an entrepreneur, or a collector. Tons to do with the 65 side missions scattered throughout the isles on top of the 20-25 hour main campaign.
Overall, TemTem is a great, fun game for a duo of players. Haven’t spent time solo, but I’m a collector, so my time gaming alone have been spent just collecting high stat Tems to sell/breed.

Its so weird, Pokemon is a franchise that's DESPERATE for some renewal and fresh ideas (and maybe some competent developers), but even the commercial fan remake is basically more of the same Pokemon experience LOL as if we didnt have enough Pokemon games that play like that.

@@anonony9081 I've tried 3 or 4 times to get into Stardew Valley, but I invariably end up feeling both bored and stressed by the short 20-minute real time days (pain in the rear when I'm in the mines) and I don't find any of the NPCs all that interesting. I made it through the first 2 or 3 seasons on my first farm, but can't ever manage even that long on any subsequent attempts.
However, what you describe is something that actually appeals to me. If I found a game like that I'd be far more willing to give it a chance; especially if the days were handled different. Like, make us go back to our house after a certain time, but let us decorate or cook or whatever as the time passes instead of forcing us to sleep and punishing us if we don't. That's what I liked with Spiritfarer and I used the nights to stock up on food and do various crafting I needed to do.

While it’s a very different story from what you outlined, I kinda got that vibe from Atelier Ryza. While a JRPG, the gameplay is more about gathering and crafting than about combat.
Ryza abandons her farm duties to go on an adventure, during which she finds out about alchemy. Studying alchemy gives her an understanding of raw materials similar to her father’s teachings regarding crops. Ryza crafts gathering tools like scythes and axes for her alchemy, resulting in her doing labour by her own choice.
Eventually Ryza gets her own garden for alchemically created seeds. She complains about it being similar to a farm, but still grows her own crops.

It’s really annoying just how much they use from Pokémon. Same baseline story structure with the dojos being a totally shameless copy of the gym system with the literal exact same number, which is also true about the party size and number of moves each Pokémon, I mean creature can learn. Even positive reviews talk about how it’s competitive Pokémon but they fixed it. Sure it’s fine they can be a shameless Pokémon knockoff if they want but I’m really not here for it. It doesn’t do a whole lot to set itself apart.

Ok. First things first. The Pokemon jokes stopped being funny after the first time. Yes, I get it. Temtem is a lot like Pokémon. That's why I got this fucking game. At the very least you could have varied the punchlines a bit. Sarcastically drawn comparisons between other things the two things share. Like calling Max Blue, or mixing up Gyms/Dojos or Temcards/Pokeballs.
Other than that though, I mainly disagree with 3 of your points.
For starters, I quite like the side quests. Sure, I'll skip them now and then If I have a lot on my palate. But otherwise there are a lot of great things you can get from them. And even if the reward is just a few pansuns, that's still really good. I'm fucking broke most of the time so any financial aid is welcome.
Second, There is atleast 1 incentive for Catching them all. The game will only tell you if an attack is super effective or not if you have the Temtem you're targeting registered in your Tempedia. Sure, you can usually infer that your attacks will work just by knowing the type matchups. But the aid is still welcome.
And third: The world design is FUCKING AWESOME. I can get why you'd feel the way you do about the first two points. But how the FUCK do you think the world design is bad? Every island in the archipelego is so pretty and has such a distinct feel. From the coral-filled Sillaro River. The rice paddies of Cipunaki, the cities built upon the great trees of Omnisa. THE ENTIRETY OF TUCMA? Temtem is legitimately one of the best-looking games I've played; pardon the human designs. And sure, maybe the actual layout of everything isn't the best? But compared to what? Pokemon games from 10 years ago? They may not be the most interesting, but atleast they've usually got some exploration. Unlike recent Pokemon games.
Atleast there's one thing we can agree on. String Instrument superiority!

I'm already pretty interested about this game, so thanks for the review IGN, I mean, The Escapist.
Jokes aside, while I appreciate that some of the strenghts and weaknesses of the game were covered, spending half of the review saying that it reminds of pokemon is not very useful, is it? It's what everyone says on any review of monster taming games

    • @WeeklyMusicalShitposts
      @WeeklyMusicalShitposts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If it's just a bargain-brand Pokémon with few new ideas, then the comparison is apt. He's saying it would probably be more fun to just play any of the Pokémon games you haven't already played, or replay one that you haven't played in a while than to play this knockoff.

    • @grimsongreen3217
      @grimsongreen3217 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@WeeklyMusicalShitposts okay, but it's not a knock off. Is it super similar? Yes. It was heavily inspired by competitive Pokemon and the issues that the pokemon franchise has, like the PP system and lacking certain QoL features and content that are staples in the RPG genre that pokemon is only now addressing in any manner whatsoever. Calling it bargain bin is just insulting and inaccurate. The review takes a surface level look at the game and says 'just play Pokemon instead'. That's like picking up digimon story cyber sleuth and saying 'just pick up SMT instead'. Both super similar games with super similar combat in the same genre, but both clearly different when you take a closer look.

I didnt enjoy Coromon. It felt more JRPG-y than Pokemon clone, and it didn't shine in either scenerio. For a JRPG, the story is sparse, the characters are uninteresting and the puzzles were often and hard (so they were a different kind of challenge rather than a diversion). As a Pokemon clone, I found it too obtuse. I found the separation between skill types and mon types more confusing than helpful and the battles were a bit too hard/draining, making me run back to the pokemon center a lot (teleport/fly was also needlessly complicated).

At some point in the video (2:09 through 2:25) the stuff that you complained about that's not in the game is in the game but it's close end-game or entirely post-game and the way you talk about collecting Temtem as if is a pain to do or the only thing to do is the same way some would depict collecting Pokemon.

From what I understand there are multiple "Pokemon-likes" and each one tries to capture a different generation of Pokemon be in GBA, DS, etc but none of them mix things up in any meaningful way. Think I remember seeing an Adam Millard video that touched on the subject. Then Pokemon Legends Arceus went and actually innovated, and I somehow suspect that future "Pokemon-likes" will be looking at its homework.

One "poke... I mean temtem" joke was enough. It's 2022, Doom clones are just called FPS games now, we understand games in the same genre will be similar so it's kinda rude to talk more about a games inspiration than the game itself in a review.

Are there enough clones to call it a genre? I thought this and Coromon were it, and they both came out this year. IDK 🤷‍♂, from a 3 minute review we learned
      - battle system is unique and interesting
      - monster designs are great, people designs suck
      - 25 hour main quest is padded with extra walking and random encounter
      - coop if fun but clunky

    1. It wasn’t funny the first time you replaced the name TemTem with Pokémon. The next 3 times was just annoying. if we can have games be called “metroidvnaia like” or “rogue like” I don’t see why it has to be such a big deal that we have a game that is Pokémon like. You were implying that this game was primarily derivative rather than expanding on a genre’s formula.
    2. Yes, this is a monster collection game. It has issues (specifically with the MMO aspects) but it’s still taking what many people used to complain about Pokemon and fixing it (battles are more challenging, the battle system is different with a focus on 2v2, multiplayer features that go beyond just trading).
I’m not saying the game is amazing. I’d give it like a 6/10 (5 being average). It’s worth a shot for those who like monster collecting but aren’t married to it having to be specifically Pokémon.

I wish reviewers would stop referring to monster tamer games to Pokemon. They do it constantly. The worst is when they go "Pokemon Clone". Do you constantly still refer to shooters to Doom? God of War and Horizon to Zelda? No, you don't so just stop already. You typically call games shooters, jrpgs, action-adventure games, etc. so you should do the same thing with this genre as well. I wouldn't bother picking this up honestly, even if you are a big fan of monster collecting games. All you can expect is to grind for long hours in order to gain the money and experience you need to do just about anything in this game. Much of the end game content doesn't actually let you use any of the Temtem you've caught along the way, or it's so RNG heavy that you can spend hours playing in a game doing everything right and objectively winning, but the game decides you fall short of the criteria it needs and leaves you with nothing to show for your time.
