    The Scania V8s sound AMAZING, I wish we got them here in the States. Any of the V8 2-stroke Detroits, though, to me, are the greatest sounding diesels of all time, with Caterpillar V8s a close second.

    • @crezychameau

      They are quite funny to overtake because you don't really hear them until you're right in front of the pipes. You're driving, everything is smooth, and suddenly "BROBROBROBROBROM"
      Tunnels are funny too. Even if you're 50 meters ahead of the truck, when it is inside the tunnel you hear it loud !

    • @missingno3617
      @missingno3617 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's funny how the yamz is a cold war era engine still being produced. I suppose that russians don't give a flying fuck about emissions lol.

    • @Alex462047
      @Alex462047 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@missingno3617 The main thing is that the engine is reliable and easily repairable. Emissions are for Europeans and Americans with no better way to use their time, and make for horribly complicated and frequently unreliable engines.
      Take the crankshaft bearings, for example. On the KamAZ 740 series motors, the bed thickness is about 2cm of cast steel. On the YaMZ 238 motor and variants, those bed thicknesses are about 5cm. The KamAZ motor is a high revving unit, pulling best at over 2000rpm (that is to say that it just won't pull properly from under 2000rpm), and they quickly begin to blow oil past the pistons as a result. The YaMZ unit pulls from 1200rpm to 1800rpm and doesn't suffer from oil blow-by as a result. That is why I like YaMZ much more than KamAZ. Before you ask, I drive both KamAZ and MAZ (with YaMZ 238 motor). But KamAZ is much more popular in Russia, for some reason.

    • @missingno3617
      @missingno3617 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know that older engines were more reliable in a way, i worked at a scania workshop in summer and the engines of the trucks are good and powerfull, but you have to take a good care of them.
      I mean, you can't use low grade diesel or anything else in the tank, fill pure adblue when is needed, do maintenance in the right time and drive the truck like it was designed for.
      In old engines you only have to put diesel in the tank and you are done, that's why there is still being produced for marine/genset/minning/military applications, in these cases you need a reliable engine with very simple maintenance.

    • @Alex462047
      @Alex462047 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@missingno3617 You see, we can't have that in Russia. As soon as you get out of Leningrad or Moscow regions, you can't guarantee diesel fuel quality, you must use what you can get. AdBlue is more widespread now than it was, but it certainly isn't everywhere, and, until some engineer can design an AdBlue system to run on more natural and less synthesised fluids, AdBlue can't be found out in the taiga if something goes wrong. Additionally, far from everyone can afford the computers required to check the diagnostic system, even if the automakers gave out the software to everyone, which they don't. To fix a KamAZ (or YaMZ) you need only generic workshop tools, a roll or other supply of 1,5mm thick rubber from which to cut gaskets, various sized pipes and a roll of 1mm diameter wire. In winter you also need a propane blowtorch or homemade solution for heating up parts. That is why they survive here.

      I'm a little subjective about this, but here goes. The KamAZ V8 was originally the YMZ 740, a successor to the YMZ 238 family of engines (still in production today as the 7511 and 6581 models). The 740 is a higher revving engine, but it's not as reliable as the engines of the 238 family. And the 238 family of engines sounds better, in my opinion. The Kraz uses the YMZ 238 engine. And I own a MAZ 5440A5 with a 6581 engine in it, running 420hp.

    I'm not gonna thumbs down this video but man you seem to be sticking your toe into oil burners. Please research your next video better. To have not one of the motors by Cummins not just the Dodge used motors when they are by far above several motors on this list is insane. As well as the fact you chose the powerstroke line up basically not one or two legendary blocks. Powerstrokes beyond 7.3 are honestly some of the most underspoke motors ever so good sounding is a stretch. Duramax deserves more attention then a 6.0. Just one did hard diesel heads opinion I may not be a real certified mechanic but 20 years of building offroad and the last two adding diesel drag builds to my resume gives me a decent mind for the subject.

    Scania's the best. Their engine production has nothing to do with Volkswagen, they're all on their own there on an old recipe since the 1960's.

    I love most of the older diesels in their various tones of angst; the new computer controlled engines are boring. The 2 stroke Jimmies, Cummins turbos with a unique whistle all their own, CAT 3208 and 3408, and the Mack engines are truly wonderful sounding, but for long life give me those Cummins inline 6's or the CAT 3408. (currently own CAT 3208 in a COE tilt- Ford and a couple of Cummins of early vintage.... one's in that CONSTRUCKTOR)

    I really like the 3208 sound. But my favorite will always be the IH 9.0L from the school buses when I was a kid.
    I know that's not a highly regarded engine, but I mean for the sound.

    Shameless plug: th-cam.com/video/j26cLjRZRQw/w-d-xo.html
    With all the respect to the american V8 diesels (this 3408 looks sweet) the DC16 just has the edge for me. I have not driven the australian uncorked versions of the american engines so I will have to believe that a cummins or cat is a better engine especially if it comes from folks that have 90t gross weights.
    However, we have a section of highway where it is uphill for more than 15 miles and it is littered with tunnels. When I switched the straight pipe on, nobody dared get in the passing lane 🙃
    Cummins used to sell an engine to DAF (Paccar) in Europe. I knew a guy who ran one and he told me that after reprogramming no Scania could keep up, fwiw.

    How about Top 10 most powerful kei car? My father used to own a 2000 Perodua Kancil (L200) which is a rebadge as a Daihatsu Mira L200 1990 and that was so cheap, easy to maintenance and that engine is original from the Daihatsu mira itself of course itu bulit to last actually. Nowdays that car petrolhead will modified it to the max including the engine even though it has a 660cc some local made to to turbo to 500hp+++ and that guy make it to drag car.

    My volunteer fire department we run 8v92ta silver at 500 horsepower and with straight pipes and Jake brakes and my other station has a 3208 in our 1981 Mack. We are volunteer so a lot of our vehicles are old and one even has a Cummins NTC 400. Oh and you can turbocharge an 8v71t and they last a really long time

    It's nice but, due to circumstance, I've come to hate the sound of a Powerstroke, but only because, living in Montana as a guy with long hair I would constantly hear "FREAK!" followed promptly by the motor hitting it's rev limit and covering me in diesel smoke...jokes on them because I lived in a bus with a Detroit inline 6 for 9 years, so it smells like home...

    Nothing sounds a sweet as a two stroke Detroit but, nothing pulls like a Cat. I started my driving career on two stroke Detroit’s and had the pleasure of having a 3406 in my last fuel tanker. Still driving but, the trucks now days just ain’t the same. Yes, they have plenty of power now but, adaptive cruise control, lane departure etc.. it just takes more control away from the driver.

    A couple of things:
    1. Ah yes, Mack diesel engines. Not great engines, but hey, you can always get them fixed.
    2. Good to see our friends Down Under getting their boots stuck in!
