Great video. I know we always say that, but then they always are. Red Mountain. The Lava River Cave. Surprising they are in the Flagstaff area. Your videos are an escape to magical places. On the one hand they are pleasant entertainment. On the other hand they sometimes make me sad that I had no knowledge of then 20, 30, 40 years ago. But on the other hand, I would never have known and experienced many of them vicariously if not for your channel. Awesome videos. Informative and entertaining commentary. Love how you talk yo us. PS: As for the food porn, what's cookin in your own kitchen looks like a very tasty gourmet meal.
Red Mountain is my favorite hike near Flagstaff. Hauntingly beautiful and great photographic opportunity. Always feel like I'm being watched while I'm there by faces in the rock. Good to see they put in a more permanent ladder.
I hiked Red Mountain several times while working at the Grand Canyon. It's an easy hike and very beautiful. I also went to the lava cave, that was 15 years ago and hardly anyone even knew about it and it wasn't easy to find. There was no one else there except the group of friends I was with. Another great hike in the area is Red Butte. I've hiked it several times and is one of my all time favorite hikes. Thanks for the video.
Loved the Red Mountain segment; very well done! Eventhough there were many people in the cave, all those people with their lights did give you the opportunity to get a better sense of scale and depth in that dark environment :-)
Slot canyons and thunder aren't a good combo. Good call. I missed Tina this time, the two of you are fun to watch. I like how you can get silly and have juvenile moments while adulting better than I do. Glad she shows up at the end. 🏜️🌋✌️🖖
I love the sound of the birds. In Westwood in Northern California, there were birds singing every day in the forest when I first moved there 20 years ago. Around 15 years ago I noticed that there were no more birds singing and the holes where the chipmunks lived were unswept. There was no noise in the forest anymore, except for the crazy sounding coyotes! Last year, I finally noticed a chipmunk and a squirrel, and the little birds were coming back. , along with a few hummingbirds. Where I am now, on the mouth of the Klamath River, I get all kinds of wildlife. I still wonder why the animals were gone so long from Westwood. I think it's poison in that town. What an amazing place. We have lava tubes off of highway 44 called the "Subway Tunnels" and "Captain Jack's Stronghold" has Lava Tunnels where Native people hid from the Calvary.
@@JerryArizona Quality over quantity is a win in my book. Your videography just keeps getting better and is a real joy to consume. Great job and keep going! 👍
It's 35 or 40 years since I did Lava River Cave. At that time there were no permits involved. Possibly it was not so well known as I didn't see anyone else there at the time. Don't recall the the exact year but it was in the depth of the summer heat in Arizona. I went in wearing my rock helmet and Just-Rite headlamp (no longer made), all the way in to the end. Fascinating place, really enjoyed it. Appreciate seeing it again.
I went to the cave / Lava tube 2 days ago with my friend Kyle and his son Dexter. What a great adventure!!! it is a solid 20 degrees cooler so dress warmer than usual. Also bring 3 lights with you. Headlamp and phone are 2 of 3
I was going to say, "Where is Tina? I need her approval before adding these to my list of places to visit." But she likes the food you prepared after the hike, and that certainly counts! I don't think I've mentioned before, but the music you select to accompany your videos is excellent! - - Steve
the colors of the place remind me a lot of Bryce Canyon - one of my fav place in the US - so this Red Mountains site is definitely going to be in my list of places to visit next time I travel to the west US...
Both fascinating sites. The nearest I've got to the Red Mountain area is Slickrock Slide Park in probably 1992. I didn't know of this site during my visit to the US, so missed out.... again.
Nice job Jerry, great video. Stayed at Parks a few years ago, didn’t realize we were so close to the Lava Caves. But we did go to Walnut Canyon which is across the freeway from Red Mountain.
@@JerryArizona we hiked down into the canyon where the trail is a loop and a lot of steps if I remember correctly. I thought there were some ruins that you passed through also. My wife and I really enjoyed it.
Man, both of those look super cool. We have a lava cave up here in WA, Ape Caves, which looks similar but that Red Mountain doesn't look like anything I've ever seen. Kind of similar to hoodoo structures at Bryce but the soil/rock seems completely different. Thanks for the vid sir.
Great vid. I almost chose those spots this past weekend. Instead spent half a day at Snowbowl and other half picture canyon. Best day ever. Perfect weather just me and my dogs.
WOW you can cook TOOO !! That footage came out great of the lava tube. Red mt. looked like hardden mud . The spears with the holes , looked like termite mounds .
I just recently moved to Flagstaff from Phoenix. I love that everywhere you turn there's a trail. Thank you for the video. This will be my next adventure.
I will second the commenter who recommended Red Butte. A good one-two is Red Butte with Cedar Mountain. Cedar Mountain reminded me of Red Mountain, but instead the slot is more broad, and runs alongside the mountain instead of into the mountain. I think these are cinder cone breeches due to faulting.
Thanks for your efforts. I love transporting myself from Atlanta to Arizona, Utah, etc. It allows me to see places I might never get to see and encourages me to go see at least some of them. 😊
That was really cool. I wasn't expecting a sort of hoodoo pile look from a former volcano are Red Mountain. Truly unique. I also have never done a lava tube/river hike. Don't have anything like that where I am, though we have a lot of more traditional caves. I think I'm not alone in wondering what the recipe was for what you made for dinner :D Thanks again Jerry. New hikes are always put a smile on my face
Jerry, I absolutely love every video production you’ve posted. Camera and editing skills are, well, just top-notch. Thank you for taking us along. Oh, and I’d love to have that shrimp and mango recipe! Looks yummy!
I have a bad habit of making up everything instead of following a recipe. So it's always something different. 'Bout got this recipe dialed in...but I'm sure I'll just forget it when I do.
Oh cool! I just filmed the Red Mountain too! I wished we had run into you! Been there a few times and it is so amazing. We had climbed to the very top and back down in a loop.
Loved the music selection on your Red Mountain segment....had to "Shazam" it as it had a distinctive Garth Stevenson/Horizon vibe to it (another artist who would be a great match for your marvelous videos). Thanks for sharing, Jerry, you're the best!
If you ever get to the northeast corner of California just south of Klamath Falls, OR, Lava Caves National Monument is a must! You could easily spend two to three days there exploring the lava tubes and caves. Great video!
Lava River Cave, not a good memory for me. Freezing cold, pitch black, rock scrambling and wet. Four of my UNfavorite things. I've done Red Mountain a couple of times. Fun hike.
Great video! Made quite a few questionable decisions at the lava tubes while at NAU a million years ago, but haven't been back since. And have never visited Red Mountain. Thanks for the newfound inspiration!
Hi Jerry, nicely done and I know I would appreciate that you were respectful of other people enjoying the cave. I might suggest you talk a little more during the video or possibly a voice over added after the fact. I do like that you weren’t talking the entire time!!
Oh! I have a new destination in Red Mountain when I head to Flag. Thx. I’ve done the Lava cave twice with no timed entry, that must be new or I went off season? As always awesome hikes!
I always love your videos. Wish I could have had a better experience at the lava tube the day I visited. Two people were smoking then tossed their butts on the cave floor and one large group were playing a boom box extremely loud. Needless to say it took away from the experience. Maybe the rangers are there to check out what people are carrying in.
Fantastic video! I’ve looked into the opening at the lava cave a couple years back in early spring. There was ice/snow hanging out there and decided not to go in and no headlamp either. I’ll have to try it out. Wondering if you have hiked Kendrick Peak?
I hiked Kendrick a couple of years ago. Pretty hike and the lookout at the top was a nice addition to the adventure. And you definitely can't get around in that cave without a good light.
When we did Red Mountian, it was pretty hot and dry, so it's cool to see it in different weather. The lava cave was in the high 30s when we did that one too. Was it pretty chilly? Great video, Jerry! 👍🏻
That’s my old playground. I have been to both places many times. I have spent the night in Lava River Cave at least once, and ate something “psilly” there once. Permits, signs, rangers, what? None of that was there then, and visitation was much lower then. There used to be some spray painted trolls and outhouse doors on the wall near the end. Looking at those trolls on the wall while tripping was a strange experience. There is another lava tube I went to once, I think it was north or northeast of Kendrick Mountain, but I can’t find any info on the internet. From my experience, a Coleman lantern is much better than a flashlight or headlamp in a lava tube. Ape Cave, near Cougar, WA is a lava tube that is 3 miles long, check it out sometime when you come to the PNW.
The Arizona Office of Tourism's official TH-cam channel is called Jerry Arizona. Thanks for another great video.

I still think you should win an award for the Zion trip videos this one’s pretty dang good too
I really liked how you shot and edited the first segment. The music choice was perfect.
I agree perfect narration and the music was the perfect choice my grandpa used to play the cello it's very soothing.
Red Mountain is my favorite hike near Flagstaff. Hauntingly beautiful and great photographic opportunity. Always feel like I'm being watched while I'm there by faces in the rock. Good to see they put in a more permanent ladder.
It kinda felt a little ominous to me too. That's why I put in that cello song. Kinda fit the vibe I felt.

I absolutely loved that for the sense of scale. Otherwise I felt like you had no idea how big the place was.
Slot canyons and thunder aren't a good combo. Good call.

Thunder + wash = no bueno. Glad you got out safely! I haven't heard of this area and will put that on my list of things to check out.

We go to Flagstaff often, Red Mountain is one of my favorite hikes. Been going to the Lava Tube since the 70s. Thanks for sharing!

I love seeing tourists are intrigued by the southwest's nature and beauty, but I also wish I could just explore alone, great locations you picked

Did you hike into Walnut, or do the paved trail at the ruins? I've done the ruins section, but want to hike into the canyon.
@@JerryArizona we hiked down into the canyon where the trail is a loop and a lot of steps if I remember correctly. I thought there were some ruins that you passed through also. My wife and I really enjoyed it.

I have Picture Canyon on the list, but haven't made it there yet.
Another great video, can’t wait for the next one. Thanks Jerry.
Very cool.
WOW you can cook TOOO !! That footage came out great of the lava tube. Red mt. looked like hardden mud . The spears with the holes , looked like termite mounds .
Amazing as usual
Some of your best work. 👍🔔
You got the shot.👁️✨
Music was perfect. 🙏
Next best thing to being there! Some of those formations look like rock "beings". 👻
I just recently moved to Flagstaff from Phoenix. I love that everywhere you turn there's a trail. Thank you for the video. This will be my next adventure.
that was nice to see, the rocks, the cave, the food and Tina;;;; Thanks for sharing...
Found Red Mountain a few years back from Arizona Highways...outstanding
I will second the commenter who recommended Red Butte. A good one-two is Red Butte with Cedar Mountain. Cedar Mountain reminded me of Red Mountain, but instead the slot is more broad, and runs alongside the mountain instead of into the mountain. I think these are cinder cone breeches due to faulting.
I should mention this is the Cedar Mountain north of Williams, not the one in the Grand Canyon. Not that the other wouldn't be of interest.
Thanks for your efforts. I love transporting myself from Atlanta to Arizona, Utah, etc. It allows me to see places I might never get to see and encourages me to go see at least some of them. 😊

Magnificent landscape. I've never seen a lave tube that long... very cool. Thanks for sharing. Great video. Great job JA
Glad shoulder healed.
It's getting there. Still not 100%, but hopefully one of these days...
WOW! Gorgeous!
Jerry, you should be a chef. Dinner looks so appetizing.
I have a bad habit of making up everything instead of following a recipe. So it's always something different. 'Bout got this recipe dialed in...but I'm sure I'll just forget it when I do.
Good video.
A fantastic video again! Jerry brings it! Auf Deutsch würde ich sagen: "Das ist pure land art!"
The canyon area looked a lot like Chiricahua except tighter. Once again great camera work.
Oh cool! I just filmed the Red Mountain too! I wished we had run into you! Been there a few times and it is so amazing. We had climbed to the very top and back down in a loop.
I didn't even realize there was a route to the top. Looking forward to the video.
Jerry, thank you so much for sharing! This is awesome. Much appreciated.
Oh, and the cameo, right at the end? Chef's kiss. Extraordinary.
Had no idea that was there. Perhaps worth a trip up there from Scottsdale this winter.
It's definitely worth a trip. Reminded me of someplace you'd see in Utah around Hanksville.
Great explore as usual! How about a cooking video?? That looked really good!
That was a ridiculously bright flashlight, you could signal jets flying at altitude! Always enjoyable and thanks again.
It worked great but was kinda obnoxiously bright. I had to use my headlamp most of the time because I didn’t want to blind anyone.
Loved the music selection on your Red Mountain segment....had to "Shazam" it as it had a distinctive Garth Stevenson/Horizon vibe to it (another artist who would be a great match for your marvelous videos). Thanks for sharing, Jerry, you're the best!

Awesome as always bro
Love Red Mountain! When did they start timed entry to the Lava Cave? I can’t find anything about it on the website. Great video!
I don't know. It said so when I looked online, but like I said, no one was checking and it didn't seem like anyone there had permits.
I’ve hiked the lava cave but not red mountain- thanks for sharing. I hit my head in the lava cave- it hurt something fierce.
We heard about the lava caves in Flagstaff. Interested in going, but wonder if it’s kid friendly hike. It looks very beautiful.

Haha! Nope. That's just the trailhead.
that tina cameo eating your mexican food goes crazy
